D. Dick- son, and Manager Luther Marlar. The Statesmen ' s season wasn ' t very successful, but Delta State, being a small school, played the best teams of this section. The season was opened against S. L. I. of Lafayette, at home, where Delta met its first defeat. The Statesmen scored first with a touchdown by Leshe, but lost 19-6. Millsaps won the next game 14-0. Delta won its first game of the season over Louisiana College 6-0, when Ballard scored. Although the Statesmen were not successful in the remaining games, they played well. Coach Dickson Captain Stumpy The last game was lost to Union University on Delta Field. We are expecting much from the freshmen and the lone red shirt Bill Shaw next year. The fresh- men are McDonald, Robertson, Watson, Varnado, Telfair, Brad- ford, and Norris. Twelve members will be lost by graduation, but there seems to be good prospects for a much better team next year. 60-GLEN STUMPY THOMPSON, (Sr.), Captain of the Statesmen, handled his po- sition at end as well as any in the Conference, was a real asset to the team, and will be missed greatly next year. 31— LUTHER MARLAR, Senior Manager, was as good as they come. Whenever a player was hurt, Luke was right there. His ability to keep the team in shape was a great asset to the team. 38— BOB LESHE (Sr.), was Delta ' s right end this year, and did an excellent job of playing t his position. He is our most popular boy athlete, a title he well deserves, as he has lettered in our three major sports, football, basketball, and baseball. 38— JAMES McKELVEY, (Sr.), was center and the fightingest man on the team. Mac was chosen on the All Conference second team. He will be missed greatly, be- cause he was a real asset. 10— WILLIE GILLIAM, (Sr.), was not a football player at heart, but he did come out to get in shape to be a fine basketball player. 37— EARL BUCKLEY, (Sr.), filled in the left tackle slot and aided in making his side of the line impregnable. Buckley was always battling. 16— FRED McMURRY, (Sr.), converted from a back to an end, turned in outstanding performances at his new position. He showed ability to play anywhere he was stationed. 43— ROSCOE BRYSON, (Sr.), transfer from Hinds Junior College, weighed 200 lbs., and put all of it into his tackle position. 14— MANLY SHORTY REEVES, (Sr.), is the smallest but one of the most aggressive of Delta State ' s backfield men. Shorty was one of the most consistent ground gainers on the squad. 25— EDWARD DOPEY GLOVER, (Sr.), came to us from East Mississippi Junior College, and made Delta State a good back for two years. He was one of Coach ' s best defensive men. 30— H. H. ROWELL, (Sr.), proved to us that weight does not mean much in football. He ably plugged the hole left by graduation of a 200 lb. man. 51-SONNY BOY GORDON, (Sr.), Charleston ' s contribution to the football squad was a fine back. Sonny Boy didn ' t play much, but was a threat all the time. 27— BILL BALLARD, (Sr.), one of the best kickers in the Conference, was a smart quarter- back. He was a fine back and will be hard to replace next year. 26— WAYNE SNOOKY HARRIS, (Sr.), was one of the fastest and best of the backs. He could be depended upon to spark the team and pep the boys up. 28— FRANK BREEZY WYNN, (Soph.), was Delta ' s hard plunging fullback. He should rip holes in many of the enemies ' lines next year. 27— PAUL AUST, (Jr.), another guard was one of the best defensive men on the team. Aust should develop into an outstanding guard next season. 22— EDDIE CREWS, (Jr.), was kept out of action at the first of the season due to a broken foot. Crews is counted on to open the season next year at his end position. A DELTA STATE GAME 50— EARLY SHANNON, (Jr.!, was one of Delta State ' s most promising guards. He is being counted upon to make the team a valuable man next year. 46— ROBERT McDONALD, (Soph.), a smart quarterback, brilliant runner, is counted upon greatly for next year ' s team. 36— JOE THOMAS, (Jr.), a fast stepping back was one of the hardest tacklers. Joe should develop into a great back next year. 42-HUGH PADDLEFOOT SMITH, (Soph.), the tallest man on the squad, showed much promise of developing into a fine end. 13— CHARLIE HOSS BARBOUR, (Jr.), cne of the fastest and shiftiest backs, promises to be one of Delta ' s best backs next year. Charlie was also a heady quarterback and an asset to the team. 38-GEORGE LONE STAR WILSON, (Jr.), tackle from Ellisville, was one of ihe hardest working, fastest charging players on the squad. George should see much service next year. 19— DUCE RODGERS, (Jr.), a fast hard charging guard, was an important cog in ihe Delta line. He was always hurt but you could count on him to turn in a fine game. 65— JAMES BULL MAGERS, (Soph.), was a member of last year ' s Wrecking Crew. He played much this year as a sophomore. Much more is expected of him next year. 20— ROBERT WADE, (Jr.), was a promising guard from East Mississippi Junior College. Wade did not stay at Delta State long, but he had the size and fight to develop into a topnotch player. 48-WILLIAM ART CASTLE, (Jr.), hails from Cleveland, and he was the best line- backer on the squad. BASKETBALL CAPTAIN LUTHER MARLER One of the most colorful basketball players ever to wear the colors of Delta State was Mar- ler. Marler comes from Mississippi ' s well-known basketball section, the Northeast, and lives at Bur- ton. He went to East Mississippi Junior College and finished his basketball career this year at Delta State. Marlar was selected on the S. I. A. A. team this year. Much can be said of him, but he is known to everyone as being the most aggres- sive player on the court. Marlar scored over 200 points but was more outstanding as a close guard. He will be sorely missed by the team and will be hard to replace. 4— BOB LESHE, (Sr.), forward, has played his entire collegiate career at Delta State, showing much ability at hitting the basket. He was a fine basketball player, and will be missed by all. 13-GEORGE LONE STAR WILSON, (Jr.), guard, hails from Collins and Ellisville Junior College. George played a fine game at guard, and is being counted on heavily for next year. 3-JAMES BUCK NORWOOD, (Jr.), transfer from Holmes Junior College, was the smallest man on the squad but was a fighter. He could always somehow spark the team when he was sent in. 14-WILLARD OVERTON, (Sr.), forward from Potts Camp, came to Delta State from Sunflower Junior College. Overton showed much ability and was a real asset to a fine Delta team. 6— FRED McMURRY, (Sr.), forward, hails from Courtland and has played here his en- tire collegiate career. Fred showed much ability as a basketball player. 8-HUGH PADDLEFOOT SMITH, (Soph.), forward, did not play much, but gave a good account of himself. He is expected to be of much service next year. Hugh has two more years to play. 12— WILLIAM McDONALD, (Jr.), from Holmes Junior College was Delta ' s center. Mc- Donald is best remembered for getting the ball off the backboard. He was not a high scorer but could get possession of the ball which meant much to the team. II— ARLIS RICKS, (Jr. i, transfer from Sunflower was a member of last year ' s State Junior College team. Arlis was a fine guard and a valuable man to have around. He is expected to help much more next year. 10— WiLLIE GILLIAM, (Sr.), forward frcm Rocky Ford was a real ball handler. Willie could always be counted upon to thrill the crowd. He is a transfer from Holmes Junior College. II— LEWIS SPEIGHTS, (Jr.), forward frcm Ellisville, was one of Delta ' s leading players. He was colorful, aggressive, and a real lover of the sport. MANLY SHORTY REEVES was Delta ' s Senior Manager. Reeves is a good ball player but was just as valuable as manager. He took good care of the team and deserves much for its success. All American THERMON BLACKLIDGE Mississippi ' s first contribution to the All American basketball world is none other than Delta ' s own Thermon Talmadge Blackie Blacklidge. Blackie lives at Moselle and came to Delta State from Ellisville Junior Col- lege. He was a hard worker on the hard- wood and one of the most likeable fellows in school. Blackie scored the most points ever scored at Delta State in a single game, 30, and was the team ' s leading scorer. He was also se- lected on the Mythical All S. I. A. A. team of 1940. Blacklidge also won honor for him- self by breaking the old record of 28 points at the National Intercollegiate Tourney at Kansas City, and setting a new one of 32 points. He was also selected on the all tour- ney team and was accorded the honor of being All American. He will be back next year to help carry en Delta ' s bid for being one of the best basketball teams in the nation. THE M CLUB ROBERT LESHE . . President FRED McMURRY Vice-President NORMAN GORDON .
