FACULTY F A C WILLIAM MARION KETHLEY, A. M., President You invest four years of your life in college, four of your brightest and best years. Compared to this in- vestment the money you spend for fees becomes quite small and insignificant. You come to learn that you can ' t buy an education, but that your true investment in college is measured by an entirely different standard. u L T Y The art of the teacher not only implies an under- standing and an appreciation of a worth-while way of living, but through individual endeavor, it recreates from within the life of the learner. Page Eighty-four ATHLETICS ....FOOTBALL . Without a doubt Coach A. D. Dickson has brought Delta State Athletics to the front. Bringing the States- men through a nine game schedule with only two de- feats, Coach Dickson carried out a difficult assignment that brings credit to him and to Delta State. Coach is appreciated by players and students. e$ Delta State had a fine record, this their first year in S. I. A. A. Competition, with only two defeats in a nine game schedule. They opened the season in Mobile, Alabama, against Springhill with a victory of 12 to 7. In their second game the Statesmen bowed to Mississippi State with the score 30 to 0. After this they were victorious over Arkansas, Memphis Teachers, Alabama Teachers, Southeastern Louisiana, and Henderson State. The Statesmen lost their next game to Middle Tennessee Teachers 7 to 0, and ended the season with a victory over Ouachita College, 13 to 6. Page Eighty-: DELTA STATE The managers, Ray Hicks and Fay Reid, hail from Tippah Union and Wheeler, re- ' spectively. These men, though not players themselves, helped the team by showing a willingness to work tor the team. Cyril White, a junior, was a first rate end. Johnee comes from Morgan City. Fed Poe was one of the best passers in the Conference and many things are expect- ed of this boy from Big Creek. Bill Ballard was one of the best ends and pass receivers on the team. Here ' s hoping he will go far next year. J. C. Wilson saw much service as end. Wilson could always be depended on, both offensively and defensively. Sam Jepson, Charles Barber, Little Bain Shannon and Sonny Boy Gordon, were the four freshmen who helped the Varsity no end. Big things are expected of these boys next year. Melvin Hemphill completed his football career with a fine record. Hemp was the cool, smart type of quarterback who held the confidence of his men. Charlie Chuck Thomas was the Na- tion ' s high scorer last year. Of Chuck Coach says, He ' s the best football player I ' ve ever coached . Clifton Bishop, a transfer from Sun- flower, was thought by many as the best kicker in the South. Clifton was one of the best liked men on the squad. 4, °Ot SI 1 I CYRIL WHITE FRED POE END END RAY RICKS FAY RE I D MANAGER manac-,E_R DICKERSON FC O T B L L WILLIAM CASTLE BACK BOB LESH BACK JEFF BOGUE TACKLE CLAUDE SPEARMAN LEWIS THORNTON MARK TACKLE TACKLE SMITH TACKLE PLAY E R S H.H. Preston Shows, a transfer from Ellisville, is the man we are looking to to fill Chuck Thomas ' place. Shows was a fine back. A. C. Williams is remembered for his passing against Memphis Teachers. A. C. will be back next year to play many other good games. William Art Castle, a sophomore and a local boy, was one of the hardest hitting backs on the field. Bob Leshe was another back from last year ' s freshmen. An all-round athlete, Bob should go far. Jeff Bogue played end and tackle equally well. Jeff will be back next year to add his strength to the team. Claude Spearman, our Captain, was known for his offensive and defensive play. Claude will be missed as tackle next year. Lewis Thornton, a transfer from Goodman, is Captain-Elect for next year. Big things are expected of Pop next year as tackle. Mark Smith, a dependable tackle, is a transfer from Raymond. Mark is expected to see lots of action next year. H. H. Rowell, a Belzoni lad, was a fine dependable guard. Hollow-Head will be with us next year. G. B. Edgar, a transfer from Raymond, was probably the scrappiest man in the squad. G. B. will be back next year. Denon Bishop was one of the finest guards in the state. One word describes Denon — Scrappy . Howard Bulldog Williams, a guard, was known for his offensive work. Williams will be missed next year. Gardner Sanders, a center, was known as an accurate and dependable player. Tancil Van Buren Caldwell was another player who came up from the Freshmen last year. Tancil was a fine ackle.
