Cleveland PAGE SIXTY-SEVEN l ooldncj Jiack The year 1933-34 has been an eventful one for the Delta State Teachers College. Student activities have reflected nobly on the institution. Intercollegiate participation both on and off the athletic field has placed the college in the foreground. The student government and faculty have worked hand in hand to maintain an enviable scholastic rating. Truly, the year has been a fine one. Looking back over the files of MISS DELTA for the past year, we find many interesting items that reflect favorably on the college, its faculty, and students. A brief review, issue by issue, summarizes the accomplishments. September 26 — The ninth annual fall session of the Delta State Teachers College was formerly opened with a simple but impressive ceremony in the Broom Memorial Auditorium. A large audience of students, graduates, and invited public assembled at the regular chapel period for the program. Delta opened the football season by losing to Milisaps 25 — 7 under the floodlights at Jackson. October 2 — Classes and student organizations prepare for an active school year by electing officers and planning activities. The Green Wave displayed a great running attack to overwhelm the Northwest Junior College 39 — in the first home game. Plans started for the resumption of intercollegiate debating. October 9 — Twenty-five applications assure the music department of an orchestra. Louisiana Polytechnic Institute defeats the Wave at Ruston 43 — li. Twenty new members are initiated into the Delta Playhouse. October 23 — Touchdown in the opening quarter makes the annual homecoming clay a successful one as the Wave downs the Sunflower Junior College 7 — 0. Student Cabinet elects Oleta Meadows Editor-in-Chief and Helen Caffey Business Manager of The Broom. Linwood Ingram is chosen as president of the Freshman Class. Debating Club formed after absence of one year with Joe Williams as president. October 30 — The Lambuth Eagles turn back the Allenmen at Jackson, Tennessee 7 — in the opening Mississippi Valley Conference football game. Virginia Litton is elected secretary of the Methodist Student Conference. Hon. Will M. Whittington accepts invitation to address the student: body November 2. November. 6 — Union University scores in the fourth quarter to win from the Wave 6 — 0, but the Allenmen gain a moral victory. Rehearsals started for Christmas musical program. November 13 — Seventy-two nominations are posted for the first primary in the Who ' s Who contest. Opening lyceum number. Hansel and Gretel, attracts large audience. November 20 — First primary results leave sixteen nominees to! parade in the Footlight Revue Thursday night. Bethel protects slender lead to win from the Wave 9 — 7 in the last home game. November 27 — Wave closes football season at Hattiesburg with 33 — 6 loss to the State Teachers. Delta Playhouse announces Oh! My Stars, a three-act play, as first presenta- tion of year. Winners in Who ' s Who contest announced. The Valley Interscholastic Con- ference will again stage its annual one-act play tournament in the Broom Auditorium December 16. Gir ls ' All-Star Soccer team announced. December 22 — Work on two Civil Works Administration repair projects allotted to the college will start this week. President Kethley announces that students may secure work on the $10,000 projects. Greenville High School wins Valley Interscholastic Conference one- act play tournament. Nineteen candidates respond to open call for basketball practice. Auditorium is packed for presentation of Christmas cantata. January S — Preside.it Kethley re-elected head of the Mississippi Valley Conference. Professor Austin L. Shipman, assistant professor of social science, joins geographical party for world tour. Men physical education classes organize an intra-mural basketball league with four teams. Girls ' intra-mural basketball program opens with fine material from all four classes. Miss Dorothy McLain, instructor in the Hill Demonstration School, weds Mr. George Causey. January 15 — Biology department acknowledges receipt of a valuable mounted lion cub head donated by C. N. Howlett, world traveler of Mountain Home, Arkansas. Wave opens basketball season by defeating the Hollandale Independents 43— 3S. Lorado Taft appears with art demonstration and lecture program as lyceum number. January 22— Deltans again defeat Hollandale Independents, score 35—34. President Kethley elected to presidency of the Delta Council of Boy Scouts. Campus buildings take on new appearance as C. W. A. work progresses. ... January 29— Celebrated Earle Cardinals manage to stave off Delta rally in closing halt to win 44— 3S. Nora Sligh, George Wofford, Rowan Thomas, and Louise Mitchim win debating club try-outs. Green and White downs Northwest Junior College 5U— 43 for opening conference victory. . February 19 — Juniors and Seniors defeat Freshman basketball team to win the gins intra-mural championship.
