Weeks of work and worry, moments of despair and misgivings fade into impenetrable oblivion as this yearbook is presented to you. We have labored hard and long, and we submit this volume with the sole hope that in the advancing years when Time shall have wrinkled your brow and Age shall have dimmed your thoughts, and when the silver of elusive memory nimbly eludes your feeble grasp, it may bring to you some pleasant remi- niscences and renew old friendships. Student Body, Delta State Teachers College, Cleveland, Mississippi. Dear Students: We want to take this opportunity to publicly express our thanks for the splendid co-opera- tion shown this year on the part of the majority of the Student Body and Staff. Without this it would have been impossible to publish The Broom. As most of you know, the annual this year was published under very difficult and trying circumstances. Due to the depressed financial condition of the Delta, our advertising was cut to only 20 per cent of normalcy. We are all aware of the fact that advertising makes it possible to have an annual. We urge you to patronize the real friends who have stuck with us. We have not been able to put out the book that we would enjoy sending you; neither have we been able to make the delivery as early as we would like. Our shortcomings and failures we ask you to overlook and only remember that under the circumstances we have done our best. Here ' s your book. Accept and save it, and if in the years to come you receive some pleasure and amusement — some pleasant memories of our by-gone college days we will be pleased. Sincerely yours, B. A. SHARP, Editor. Thrice State Chainpioes - O begin a season on October 13th is considered unlucky, but 13 ' s are ■C) always lucky for the Rabbit-Foot Squad of Delta State. This was the date of the initial call for material by Miss Mary Stephens, successor to Miss Bourgeois. Twenty-five enthusiastic girls responded. Practice for the annual intra- mural games was on ! When the fray was ended and the smoke of battle had cleared the most promising players were selected for the varsity squad. Abdo, Bryan, Bailey, Boyd, Carr, Chapman, Caldwell, Evans, Ezelle, Cotton Gorton, Red Gorton, Holly, Jumper, Montgomery, Wade, Smith, and Ball were chosen to carry the colors of Delta into battle. Caldwell, business manager for the squad, began her duties with a temporary schedule arranged for the entire season. Only three games were scheduled and played before the holidays. Sunflower Junior College was the first to meet and feel the sting of the lash applied by the Delta Lassies, going down in defeat, 24-17. Not at all satisfied with the spoils of their first encounter, the Sunflower maidens came back in a return game n:xt on Delta ' s schedule and turned the tables, defeating Delta, 25-23. Stung to the quick by the lash of defeat, Delta travelled to Clarksdale and there, in an exhibition game opening the new gymnasium there, took the measure of the fast aggregation from St. Agnes ' Academy of Memphis, 27-23. Coach Stephens failed to return after the holidays, and Coach Young took over the coaching duties. Ole Miss, Delta ' s ancient rivals, were next in line. Coach Young whipped his squad into top form and sent the Blue and White Lassies smash- ing down into defeat under the staggering score, 55-11. Returning from their vic- torious invasion of Ole Miss, the Rabbit-Foot Squad stopped off at Grenada to find out why those particular girls were arguing a right to the state championship. An argument ensued, and when the smoke of battle had cleared Delta had settled the dis- pute and had shown the Grenadans, 25-12, that they had to grow up a bit before they got anything like the state championship. The previously undefeated Pedagogettes of Hattiesburg then took up Grenada ' s quarrel with Delta, but they, too, found out, 45-7, that Delta was still mistress of the field. Tennessee, remembering the less of the Valley title to Delta last season, tried to wipe out the blot by two-court ball, but again Delta was mistress. Delta was not satisfied with the first and only defeat of the season at the hands of Moorhead, and in two more games had satisfied themselves that the Juniorettes must have been mistaken in their victory. Next came Tennessee. This time the Delta-ettes were unable to stop the march for victory and Tennessee took the lead, 35-29. Fast on the heels of this defeat came the Majorettes of Millsaps, and twice, as if it were the blows of a sharp-edged ax, fell before the onslaught of the Green and Whites. Grenada, nursing a hangover and feeling the same way about their argument, again suffered defeat and the loss of the state title. Delta was not satisfied with the state title three years in succession, so they made up their minds to get the Valley title twice in succession at the same time. So Coach Young and Assistant Mauldin carried the girls to Martin, where the various disputes were to be settled on the field of honor. Fate stepped in and Tennessee was drawn for Delta ' s first argument. With a small but comfortable margin of four points the decision went to Delta. Moorhead, by virtue of the bracket, was next in line, but forfeited when they were unable to attend. The final game came! Freed-Hardeman must be beaten! It was the last of the season and was for the highest honors. Freed-Hardeman was crushed, 40-25, and Delta had come through victorious with the lion ' s share of the spoils. Five members of this team graduate this year. They, in helping win the state championship thrice and the Valley title twice, have laid the foundations and corner- stone for girls ' basketball at Delta State.
