Purpose of the club is to recruit students of Spanish heritage to Delta and to raise scholarship money. 71 U2 SPURT = i O R T FIELD HOCKEY INEXPERIENCED This was a trying season for the girls field hockey team, Starting with only nine players, they fortu- nately raised their number to thir- teen. At the start of the season, half of the girls had never played field hockey before. Coach McDonald felt that the girls definitely had talent and the only thing lacking was experience. There were only two returning play- ers from last year. Although the team continued to improve greatly throughout the season, McDonald said, Tt takes a long time to get down the skills of hoc -ey. Spirit on the team was never a problem for the girls were always en- thusiastic and were always encour- aging and helping one another. With the basic learning process out of the way, it is hoped that next season will be brighter. Standing: Cristal Dugan, Janine Martin, Ton1 lagnio, Wendy Wagner, Carolyn Johnson, Ceal Timm, Debra LaPorte, Coach Jane McDonald. Front: Cathy Carrier, Michelle Weston, Diane Davis, Karen Seman, Deborah Jennings, and Sue James, 76 CROSS COUNTRY STRUGGLES The Delta cross country team this season consisted of two men, Juan Munoz and Mark Scott, and two women, Kathy Haas and Dawn Becker. Since there were not enough runners to make an official team of five, the runners ran for in- dividual satisfaction and turned in some fine individual perform- ances. Cross country coach, Richard Prentice, felt the team faired well. I was pleased with their performances this year, Frentice said. “With their inexperience I was mainly looking for improvement and they improved a lot during the course of the season, I think they would have improved more had it not been for their injuries. : 78 TENNIS HAS FRUSRATING otanding: Fronts Coach Fippy Booth, The Womens tennis team, in only its third year of existence at Delta, had avery dismal season. However, some accomplishments were made. For the first time in the three year history of the team, .a tennis set waS won by someone in a Fioneer uniform. Margaret Matthews and Rena O'Brien teamed up to defeat a doubles team from Jackson Community College, Also, it looks as if Delta has Cathy Rokita, Margaret Matthews, lisa Saro, Ehil Cosens and Jill Templin. Kena O'Brien. found the coach that may help things turn around for the Pioneers. Pippy Booth, a native Australian, is very experienced as a tennis player and has taught the game for several years, What did Booth think of her ten- nis team this year? I couldn't have wished for a better group of girls. They have worked hard and have in- proved tremendously. SEASON WT nn tree 79 SOCCER STARTS Front row: Mark Carpenter, John Weadock, Sean McCoy, Amir Shahmirza, Santos Jimenez, Afu Arsalan. Back row: Mike Brown, Steve Miller, Curt Johnston, Bob Krupka, Kurt Sladick, Mike Bontumasi. Eleia Hawa and Coach Crawford Kennedy. The 1978 season could not have started much better for Crawford Porddy Kennedy and the Delta soc- cer team, with over forty athletes showing up for pre-season tryouts. After final cuts, Kennedy felt he had the cream of the crop. An un- usual number of American students tried out for the team, with eight of them making the squad, the most since 1969. The Pioneers opened the season impressively by recording two shut- outs in the first three games. How- ever, a losing streak followed. The Pioneers did bounce back and prove their ability by defeating Lorrain 10-0. Unfortunately, this did not set the trend for the rest of the season, The team had its share of in- divi dual stand-outs such as John Weadock, Afu Arsalan and Hleia Hawa as the leading scorers. Key de- fense players were Mike Bontumasi, Kurt Sladick and goalie Bob Krupka. Kennedy hopes many of the players will return next season to give it another shot. 82 VOLLEYBALL: Determined To This year the Volleyball team was forced to start from scratch, with no returning players from last season. The team started strong, but just before mid-season, while in the toughest part of their schedule, some unfortunate injuries occured, At one time, three of the nine men- ber squad w ere sidelined with inju- ries, The team then had to work to get things back on the track, According to Coach O'Toole, the biggest plus for the team was. the spirit and dedication. Their atti- tude was excellent and they were will- ing to work hard, often volunteering time on weekends for extra practice, A high-point in the season was a trip to Grand Rapids to watch a game between the Japanese and U.S. Womens Olympic Volleyball teams. O'Toole hopes that many of the team members will return to the squad next season to make the rebuilding year pay off, [mprove — |, ee Standing: Coach Pat O'Toole, Nancy Rekucki, Sandy Cilc, Karen Jacksom, Gayle Gehringer, Jeanine Morse, Kim Stindt, Mer. Among those players were: Dennis McDonough (St.Stephens), Ron Seott ( Carrollton ), Kevin Quiroz (Douglas MacArthur) Robert El-Amin and Billy Ware (Saginaw High). Other team members were Rick Longmire, Lester tytle, Kevin Threloff and David Wilsm, , the youthful Pioneers were often victims of their own inexperience, but at the same time, they played games like old pros. One thing was for sure, they were rarely blown out of a game. Most of their games were either won or lost in the last minute, and the margin of defeat or victory was often four points or less, Only two of the players were soph- omores, so Gelow should have some Seasoned players for next year, MEN SHOW COMPETITIVE SPIRIT The Delta College Women's basket- W 0 M E N S U F FE R ball team of 1979 had little experi- ence in the college ranks, and the women suffered through many lopsided losses on their way to gaining that valuable experience. Head Coach Char Denman, in her 11th as coach of the women, had her hands full in trying to bring the women up to college basketball potential. Most of the girls played some sort of athletics in high school, but there is a big difference between the com- petition they had seen in high school, and the competition seen in college. The women's only early season vic- tory was a 57-54 win over Alpena. Otherwise, they were victims of their opponents college experience. Denman is hoping that the women she has on this year's team will return again next season to continue on with what they started this season, Members of this year's team in- clude: Mary Meatte, Gloria Hutfilz, Gayle Gehringer, Marquietta Davis, Margaret Matthews, Sue James, Karen Jackson, Penny Phelps, Judy Rife Cindy Woodrow, Ann Wisniewski and Carol Satkowiak.
