The show closed with an All-American musical com- edy, only this time the main char- acters were Tricky Dick, a garbage collector, and a hot dog. When Bob Seger came to Delta, Sunday night, September 14, 1975, he proved to the crowd that he was indeed, a one man music machine and still a Michigan favorite. Lampoon Comedy Delta Student Activi- ties presented live and in all its objectionable splendor, The National Lampoon Show on November 18, 1975, in the Delta College gymnasium. In keeping with the tradi- tional National Lampoon style, the evening swung from funny, to gross, to obscene, and back again. Eventually we get old enough to believe in them again, said Jim Leffew, director of Alice in Wonder . The Delta Players put on this adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass for their first Children's Theat- er of the year. In six days, for eight performances, elementary school children filled the Lecture Theater to capacity. The kids were delighted by such char- acters as a Mock Turtle, a Gryphon, Tweedledum, Dee, a Cheshire Cat, Humpty Dumpty, and a White Rabbit. The kids also loved the special effects of a strobe light, flash powder, and a fluor- escent cat. 1. Alice (Pam Davis) helps the White Knight (Paul Hen- kel) keep his balance. 3. Our Town Performed The place: Grover's Corners, New Hampshire. The time: May 7, 1901. That's where you were December 5'th and 6'th if you caught the Delta Play- ers on stage performing Our Town. The cast and crew gave outstanding per- formances, bringing about great audi- ence involvement. Thorton Wilder said the following about his play: Our Town is not offered as a picture of life in a New Hampshire village; or as a speculation about the conditions of life after death. It is an attempt to find a value above all price for the smallest events in our daily life. The day after Delta's last performance, Thorton Wilder died, at the age of 78. 2. Other events included lectures, readings, history and art ex- hibitions, seminars, and con- certs. Talents Expressed The highlight of Black History Week was the talent show that took place February 18th in the Delta gymnasium. There was a combination of bands, danc- ers, and singers, including the Saginaw High School Soul Choir. There was a total of sixteen different talents pre- sented. The large num ber of foreigners, 16 repre- senting six countries and 6 Americans, couldn't overcome communication problems that resulted in a disappointing season. The Pioneers finish- ed at 5-5-1. In the North- wood encounter, Delta lost its all-conference goalkeep- er, Bill Paige. Stan Krajkow- ski replaced Paige and fared well. Among highlights of the '75 soccer squad was the selection of Soleman Younes, Lalor Roddy, Rob Keit, and Manual Gerrara to the Michi- gan Community College Athle- tic Association Central Divi- sion All-Conference Team. Roddy, a native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, was select ed to the all-regional team and later selected to the honorable mention All-Ameri- can squad. - r tr ee Ss Foreigners Head Soccer lean l. Delta Harriers Caught Short Delta's Cross-Country Team start- ed the season only to find itself short-handed at the finish. The har riers opened the campaign with eight healthy runners and a 9 and 3 record after their first few meets only to finish with a 9 and 7 log and only two or three healthy harriers. The Pioneers opened the season with four returning lettermen but were looking for a strong fifth. Ironically, by the time the season closed, Coach Prentice was looking for just five runners! The Pioneers lost several key meets because they lacked five entries. Although the harriers lost their four key runners Bob Dyer, Tim Myers, Randy Neumeyer, and Carl (Skip) Bjork, there was one outstand- ing highlight. Don Law, Bridgeport grad, qualified for the 1975 Nation- al Junior College Athletic Associa- tion's Cross-Country Championships at Rochester, Minnesota, by placing 10th in the Regional XII Meet. Players Endure Rough Season The Women's Field Hockey Club finished the somewhat disappointing but enthusiastic season with a 2-8-2 re- cord. The two wins, 1-0 over Wayne State University and 2-1 over Toledo, and two ties, a 0-0 stand-off with Olivet College and 2-2 season finale with Alma College, were the only highlights of the season. The women hustled in every game and sometimes played over their heads as shown by their 3-0 loss to Central Mich- igan University. The played well ghout the season, but in each game one could see progress in the team's play, understanding of the rules, and ability to work as a team. shale al Hh il 4 ybetrdit he Spikers Gain Experience The women's volleyball squad opened the season by taking their first four matches beating Al- pena CC 15-1, 15-7, Oak- land GC 15-5, 15-5, Mont- ealm CC 15-6, els and Olivet College 15-12, 15-6, 7-15 and 15-0. But the young and inexperi- enced spikers lost their next 10 out of 13 matches to finish the season with 4 7-10 record. But the Pioneers overcame the height disadvantage and upset much taller ball clubs. Among the Pio- neers' victims were Central Michi- gan University J.V. 85-75, Oakland Community College 983-76, Henry Ford Community College 55°53, and Highland Park Community College 70-69. The victory over Highland Park was the first at Highland Park for Coach Still. Throughout the Pioneers continually produced turnovers, mass production style, committing a season high 38 in a 93-72 loss to Flint Mott Commun- ity College. Val Bracey led the Pioneers in scoring by averaging nearly 18 points a contest includ- ing 29 against Lansing in an 81-71 loss. 1. Steve Sarata (51) tries for two, as Jim O'Connor (35) waits for the possible rebound. 2. Art Adan (41) drives for the basket while Steve Sarata (51) rushes in. 3. We had a tremendous disadvantage, for we lacked height. But the kids hustled and gave 100 percent when they were out on the hardcourt. They proved to many that they were capable of beat- ing any teamon a given night. The Pioneer start- ing line-up, Still jok- ingly stated consists of four guards and one for- ward. Tim Adams, Delta's only returning letterman from the 74-75 campaign, was the tallest Pioneer at. 6! 3 ...Valy Bracey stood at 6'2' while Duke Walker and Reggie Holmes were 6' O . Duane Rey- nolds, the team's play- maker, was the smallest starter! at 5.9 ... Other members of the Pioneer squad included Art Adan, Steve Sarata and John VanSumeren. The Pioneers played the season with only one sophomore so next year the returning players will be back with not only playing time but team experience as well. Pioneers Finish Fair Season The women's basketball season came to an abrupt end when the Pioneerettes lost in the opening round of the Michigan Association of Athletics for Women (AIAW) State Basketball Championship 60- 49 against Mott Community College. The setback was the second of the season against the Bears, the first a 55-51 loss. The women fin- ished the season with a mediocre 8-6 overall mark which included a 7-5 regular season. Among Pioneer victims were Lake Superior 62-33, Northwestern 90-40, Alpena 90-31, Spring Arbor 62-58, Alma 65-53, Olivet 75-46, and Schoolcraft. It was not a normal season for Coach Char Denman, as the women were not able to beat the opposition in close games. They dropped close ones with Mott, Grand Rapids 60- 57, and Central Michigan 61-58. ee ee... eet ( ttst— =S=S=‘—OS™SOSO” ‘ i £2 hy vars 1. Delta's hockey coach, Jim Keenan, added several new players as the squad improved great- ly from the 1-13 mark of a year ago. The icers de- feated five different col- leges in posting a win- ning record in 19 games. Coach Keenan stated, We accomplished more this season than I thought we would, and I feel that next season will be even better. Bill Hamb ling was the top goal-getter for the Pioneers, with Dave Spragata leading the team in assists. Goalies Mike Brin, Paul Henkel, and Glen Marks recorded the only shutouts in the club's history in vic- tories over Northwood In- stitute and Grand Rapids Junior College. Keenan said, The squad looked better every game. The players -matured-and they worked more like a team later in the season. Hockey at Delta is still a few years away from be ing a varsity sport, but the team showed that they could play with and beat several more established teams. Newell H.
