Henry Brougham. Education is that one im¬ portant asset which determines the future of our nation. Delta College is education. 2 pH ,. 1 1111 IpHr Jrafe i ii!i ’ iV jmi ' Hm rmuMmii 1 “ r ■■ ! ■£ = ivlfs 3 S 4 Academic study takes many forms in college life. The student is free to choose the course and setting which best suits his tastes and academic goals. Often called an island of innovation , Delta provides a wide range of studies both in credit courses and special in¬ terest non-credit courses. 5 Fulfilling its role as a community col¬ lege, Delta must first turn to the needs of the tri-counties. Through evening adult education classes, non-credit community education courses, cultural events for both young and old and an unending stream of qualified graduates Delta prepares the area for the future. 6 7 8 Academic studies are only half of a col¬ lege ' s responsibilities. A balanced so¬ cial life is essential to a balanced edu¬ cation. For the residents of Delta ' s on- campus housing, the two dorms be¬ come the center of both their academ¬ ic and social lives. The court and new student center also provide sanctuaries from classroom pressures. 10 Athletics provide a spirit of competi¬ tion which is often needed after the stresses of a long day. Through seven intercollegiate sports for men and three for women, Delta students find satisfaction in the triumphs of victory and the anguish of defeat. The democratic process requires shar¬ ing of skills and abilities. At Delta this sometimes takes the form of student- to-student help. At other times it is a faculty-student or student-faculty- community form of give and take. 12 As the cultural center of the tri-coun¬ ties, Delta strives to bring top enter¬ tainment and political figures to the area. Speakers are presented through the college council and top show busi¬ ness acts through the president ' s an¬ nual program. 14 15 Each student has his own unique per¬ sonality, and the importance of being an individual is shown in college. With¬ out individual goals and ideals, a stu¬ dent finds school meaningless. College life helps to develop one both as a leader and a follower. 16 17 Living The sum of behavior is to retain a man ' s own dignity, without intruding upon the liberty of others. Each club and organization is represent¬ ed. This year the Council adopted a new constitution and sponsored several convocations and dances. Sophomore class repre¬ sentatives to the College Council this year were Darryl Sczepanski, Dave Fries, Cindy Engelhardt and Ann Forbes. Betty Jacobs takes on the duty of swearing in the new representatives. This year ' s freshman representatives were Dave Brennan, Cindy Strefling, Nancy Broihier, Ken Harris, Sue Bader, Maureen Driscoll and Mark Stevens. 40 Before the start of one of the weekly College Council meetings (TOP CENTER), Betty Jacobs and Mark Stevens go over some of the up¬ coming topics with John Rohrkemper, president. The Council sup¬ ported the moratorium activities, and many of Delta ' s students par¬ ticipated in area marches (LOWER LEFT). Ralph Nader (LOWER RIGHT), national safety expert, spoke to Delta students as part of a three-part viewpoint program backed by the Council. 41 The smiles disappeared quickly from the faces of these five. They were chosen as publications ' editors for this past year. LEFT TO RIGHT they are Mary Lou Kenney (Orientation editor), Kieth Arnett (Collegiate), Darryl Sczepanski (Gnosis), Don Klimmek (Dialogue) and Bob Anderson (Collegiate). Sue Sanderson changes the film in one of the cameras. Sue is photo editor of the paper and responsible for keeping the negatives in order. Staff Produces Collegiate The Collegiate is Delta ' s weekly newspaper. Under the advice of Mrs. Pauline Drumm, the production of the paper is entirely student oriented. The staff re¬ ceives no pay, but works voluntarily. The number of pages varies from four to twelve pages. Production of the orientation issue of the Collegiate is done by a small staff. This year they were Mildred Henderson, Mary Lou Ken¬ ney, editor, Mrs. Pauline Drumm, and Jim Griffiths. 42 Mark Stevens, editorial editor, measures the column inches carefully to accurately plan the page. Typing one of his articles for the Collegiate, editor Bob Anderson (ABOVE) checks the spelling of a word. Cindy Engelhardt (LEFT) acts as business manager for the Collegiate and always has a smile on her face even though her job may not always warrant one. 43 Pooling ideas for page layouts in the sports section are Randy La- Fonde, Brent Foster and Jim Sigelko. Sue Bader, Connie Taglauer and Bev Thon work together and crop pictures needed in the yearbook ' s final deadline. The staff frequently works together on a particular page. Darryl Scze- panski (ABOVE) points out a copy mistake that needs to be correct¬ ed. The editor ' s job includes preparing a satisfactory introduction. Darryl (BELOW) writes captions for part of his introduction. 44 1 Editor of the album section, Yvonne Ittner draws some of the faculty layouts. Students Design Yearbook Published by the American Yearbook Company, the 1970 Gnosis was designed by Delta students who vol¬ unteered for this extra-curricular work. In pictures and copy, this finished product tells the story of Delta, its classes, its clubs and its people. Connie Taglauer (ABOVE) reaches for extra copy sheets to finish the layouts of the Greek section. Mrs. Pauline Drumm, advisor, looks over a selection of pictures with Darryl Sczepanski, editor, and Bob Anderson, Collegiate editor (BELOW). 45 Dialogue Is Student Work Prose editor Karen Roberson (ABOVE) brings a little sunshine to the Dialogue office as she rereads some of the accepted materials. Matt Bilodeau (UPPER RIGHT) looks over the shoulders of Don Klimmek, editor, and Cindy Tormala, coordinator, at a few of the many stories accepted. Matt is in charge of public relations. Doing his job as art editor, Jim Barrera (LOWER RIGHT) examines a painting to be used in the book. The literary magazine Dialogue, is a collection of writings and other artistic endeavors of Delta ' s stu¬ dents. The Dialogue staff begins its work early in the fall by reading, sorting and rereading the materials submitted to them. The deadline for final copy was ear¬ ly in December and then the organizing began. The final publication appeared in the spring for sale to the student body. Students Tutor Area Teens Delta ' s Volunteer Program is a student-centered tu¬ torial project which provides educational aid to under¬ privileged area elementary and high schools students. Each volunteer spends part of his free time each week during the school year working individually with as¬ signed students. Delta students plan their own tutoring sessions with the advice of the faculty coordinator. Volunteer program coordinator was Dr. Robert Roman. The student volunteer program is enthusiastically discussed by Dr. Roman and interested students during a free moment of the day (LEFT). Two volunteers are receiving their most recent project and accomplishments (BELOW). After a busy day on the job, students are relating their unique experiences. 47 Honor Society Adds Membei In Candlelight Ceremony Phi Theta Kappa is Delta ' s national honorary schoh tic society and elects members on the basis of oi standing academic performance, community servic citizenship, leadership and character. To be elgible f membership, a student must be carrying at least hours of credit at Delta which will transfer to a 4-ye degree granting college. Membership is open to all Delta students. The foreign students in the club talked about their home countries, cultures, tradition, religions, fashions and culinary customs. Various interesting articles from different countries are displayed at the International Club Fair (TOP), and an International Club member (CENTER LEFT) is stationed at the club display at the Club Expo dur¬ ing All-Events Week. The International Club is a group of Delta students who organized to promote good will and understanding among different cultures and all na¬ tions. Foreign students attending Delta create a friendly atmosphere in which understanding can grow. 49 A tricycle race is one of the highlights of the fun-filled Greek Week, as darkhorse Marianne Burk soon discovers. Greeks Show Inspiration And Enthusiasm in Student Activities Greek Council Fraternities Greek Council is a representative group comprised of members of the nine Greek organizations. Officially called Inter-Fraternity-Sorority-Council (I.F.S.C.), it organizes such events as Rush Week and Greek Week. The latter includes such sports as tricycle races, pie¬ eating contests, rope-pulling contests, slave sales, and car rallies. It ' s officers, elected in the fall, comprise the executive committee. Christmas time gives occasion to celebrate Silver Bells a formal dance sponsored by Chi Alpha Epsilon and their brother fraternity, Lambda Nu. XAE ' s also put on, Blow-up , a dance following final exams in April. Rush, held in September and January, calls for energetic XAE ' s to display their sorority pride to Delta students. Although Sue Wawrzyniak, Genie Talaski, and Margie Bateson may look exhausted after an afternoon at Kolb Baseball Field, they never say die as the XAE ' s are challenged to a softball game by Delta Sigma Nu. 52 Delta Zeta Chi Delta Zeta ' s have no fear of the blizzardy winter with this lifesaver at their side. Kathy Hayes, Julie Craig, Jessie Hart, Gerry Henderson, and Barb Smith demonstrate their display during Greek Rush Week. Cherie Stabnick, president, seems to be enjoying a dance with her date, while her sorority sister, Delores Ramirez, looks perplexed at the situation. 54 FRONT ROW: Dan Wagner, Rick Franz, Jeff Rombach, Jim Hales. BACK ROW: Jack Spenner, A. Brother, Jim Matkze, Jerry Clayton. Kappa Tau Sigma Kappa Tau Sigma, with the Chi Alpha Epsilon sorori¬ ty, sponsored the College Kick-Off in the fall. Of course, this wasn ' t the only activity of the fraternity. Many parties and small get-togethers filled their time outside of school. 55 Lambda Nu Lambda Nu, like other Greek organizations, partici¬ pated in rush week in the fall by setting up a display in the rooms just off the Commons. Again this past year the group worked with the Chi Alpha Epsilon sorority and sponsored Silver Bells, the Christmas formal. The banner at the far end of the room distinguishes this rush week display from all the other displays. All of the Lambda Nu brothers are fun-loving as proven by this sociable gathering smiles and all. 56 Phi Delta Chi Every Greek organization had a display during rush. Phi Delta Chi was no exception. The brothers of Phi Delta Chi are like all the other Delta fraternities . . . they know how to have fun. They proved this with their annual Communications Break¬ down which took place in the fall. Hours of planning resulted in hours of fun in many of the dances and oth¬ er social activities throughout the year. Taking tickets at the door for their dance are (ABOVE) Dave Wolinsk, Kitty Wickman, Ted Wickman and Bob Wolpert. Burning a float fol¬ lowing a local parade are some of the brothers of Phi Delta Chi. AN ACCENT ON YOUTH This is fast becoming a nation of young people. In fact, very shortly half the population of the United States will be under twenty- five. At Dow Corning, as with many other companies across the country, the younger generation is playing an important role in the com¬ pany ' s activities. Why? Because there ' s a lot of truth in that ojd saying about there being no substitute for experience - and that ' s exactly what young people are getting today so that they can grow into the responsible leaders we will look to for guidance in the years to come. Work-study programs are one way that young people are getting that experience. At Dow Corning, co-op students have jobs in laboratories, production, engineering and offices. Here are five co-op students from high schools and colleges in the Tri-City area who are working in Dow Coming ' s laboratories. The die was cast and a few sheets of paper began to take shape as the rough copy of a yearbook. Fall term began with the selection of staff members and the time consuming task of alpha¬ betizing and numbering student photos. Moving at a constant pace, the staff drew layouts and took pictures. We had a hard time securing several pictures, but tried to slight no one. The 1970 Gnosis went to press during the first week of class of the winter term. As editor I would especially like to thank Assistant Editor Connie Tag- lauer for all her help; Bev Thon, Susan Bader, Yvonne Ittner, Randy LaFone and Jim Sigelko for their help in several sections; Bob Anderson, for his fine photographic talents; Pauline Drumm, for her long hours of work above and beyond her duty as advisor; Mr. Ray Figg, American Yearbook Representative; and John Krafft, who supplied many photographs to make the 1970 Gnosis a complete product.
