Mary Ann Vogt James McNamara 37 School of Nursing The Delta College Division of Nursing, by offering the associate degree program, is helping to alleviate the growing shortage of nurses. Under the direction of Dr. Luis Fol- gueras, there has been a revision of the cur¬ riculum, integrating the sciences, and incorporating growth and development with the nursing course. The number of credit hours needed for graduation has been decreased to better align the nursing program to the educa¬ tion pattern of a junior college. By means of classroom lecture and selected hospital experiences, under the supervision of the Delta nursing faculty, the student is able to obtain first hand knowledge and practice in the art of bedside care of patients. After completing the required courses, and receiving an Associate Degree in Applied Science, the graduate is eligible to sit for the State Board Examinations in Nursing. These same examinations are taken by the graduates of three and four year schools. Upon success¬ fully passing this exam, and earning the proud title of “Registered Nurse,” he or she can fill a position in a hospital, doctor’s office, or clinic with the assurance of doing a competant job. Although the graduate of the associate degree program is not trained to function in a super¬ visory capacity, with experience, time, and additional education, this too can be accomplished.
