Through their own determination they presented the idea to the public, and formed a tentative plan of operation • The citizens of Bay, Saginaw and Midland counties grouped together to form a solid wall of support, and gradually the final plans evolved. Today the bricks, tiles and stones of Delta are a concrete testimony of the leader¬ ship and determination of the citizens of the three counties. In building Delta College, these people have made not only a monument of achievement for future generations, but an institute which will, in itself, enable each member of these generations to develop his special talents to better serve the interests of his com¬ munity, country and all of mankind. Five hundred thousand dollars for this barn. No small amount of money; but the returns for the money far outweigh this initial cost. Can one put a price on B.A. ! s, M.A. ! s and Ph.DJs? How much do Intelligence and Wisdom cost? 11 On October 4, 1959, work began. Today, three years later, this land has become the realization of a six million dollar educational dream. This dream is only nearing fulfillment as students wrestle with new ideas and strive to find the answers that will lead them to their goals. Only in the future will these students, and those who will follow them, help make not only Michigan, but the world a better place to live in, thus fulfilling the dream. 12 The following pages will, perhaps, be a small indication of how Delta is helping to prepare its youths for that task. 14 15 16 The language lab - a place where strange words are heard and thoughtful faces concentrate on precise enunciation. Here modern equipment aids in the teaching of foreign languages. o e dV 0,0 ' The Commons is the place where Delta students and faculty members come to eat, to drink and to talk. Here any thing from nourishing plate dinners to not so nourishing (but definitely filling 1 ) Cokes and potato chips are always available. In the relaxed atmosphere of the Commons it is easy to goof—off for a while. The apparent relaxation, however, is somewhat deceiving; many students take advantage of the time here, over coffee perhaps, to seriously discuss controversial questions. But no matter what his special interest is, whether it s food, fun or intellectual free-for-alls, everyone comes to the Commons. 18 Over ten thousand titles line the shelves of Delta’s Bookstore. Books not only for classes, but also for pleasure reading. The students can find art work, (both original and copy), all occasion cards, school sweaters and jackets, souvenirs and jewelry and so much more here, too. It is certainly a bookstore that serves its customers well. L 1 ' I i | IL. Jl , i-T-l - r 1 ■ EsP t Jfi . V fe . The up—to—date machines quickly and accurately do tedious jobs that would take human hands many days to complete. A modern advancement for efficient administration, these machines are yet another example of Delta s constant attempt to serve its students in the shortest possible time. 22 23 24 The fog is rising. Hot Dogs and Neon Jerry Lynch This country used to be hot dogs and picnics and fourth-of-July and candlelight and band concerts and cattle crossings and barber-shop quartets (wait ’till the sun shines, Nellie). How uncomplicated and human. Now this country is neon and falsies and fallout shelters and she-males in slacks. This country is toll roads and no stopping for hitch-hikers and next stop three miles and shake water from hands. Oh, if only I could see candlelight outside expensive restaurants and un-padded breasts and dresses that do dress and real blondes. Our progress yes, but can’t we be a little old-fashioned—yes. We don’t have to replace every old bridge that clatters. What matters is remaining human, and maybe even singing wait ’till the sun shines, Nellie. 88 Figure Studies Janet McGunegle The Beard Defiantly it stood in blackest splendor alone it stood; A more fearful sight I couldn ' t remember. Sported by a man whose courage and tact up to now had been taken as a matter of fact. But now he was real and worth listening to. did he speak or write wisdom ? maybe a mad trumpet blew. To the girls he remained an individual and why! one could tell for to be kissed by a man like that would surely be- (they wouldn’t tell.) But it still grew and his fame as well. but he couldn’t let it go to his head or be bad or misbehave, because his secret was the fact that his skin was too tender to shave. General Grovefl an executive of Remington Ranf was the head of the Manhatteu Project which developed the Atomic Bomb. The discussion, which was taped for future use, covered the topics of nuclear war, civil and national defense, and shelter manufacture. 104 jfl Bn Hf. I • SfH •; jF Rflft ' T ' Students Protest 1 i On November 4th, a group of Delta College students began a protest of atmospheric testing of nuclear bombs. The protest was organized by Bernie Hiedtman, a Delta sophomore. With the help of students and citizens of the three counties, Bernie set up the M Corn-field camp in a field on Delta Road. His plan was to have the camp go continuously for 16 8 hours; his objective was not only to protest but in doing so to stir people into thinking about the subject and taking a stand, one side or the other. 106 A sense of comradeship, high spirits and seriousness of purpose prevailed over the camp Students passing to and from Delta blew their horns and w aved as they passed the H sit out 11 and a few shouted their disapproval. People from all three cities came out in small groups. Some stayed only a few moments; others the whole night. Supplies were never a problem; nearly everyone brought something for the students to eat. 107 The sit out was a special event in Delta’s first year. The camp and the serious discussions it provoked demonstrated the awareness of students here in affairs other than those of school itself. 108 Senator Hart Interview The pictures on this page are of the Sena¬ tor Hart discussion. Senator Hart gave his views on the newly—inagurated Kennedy Ad¬ ministration as well as other facets of govern¬ ment and politics. His talk was followed by a lively question and answer period. The Senator later expressed appreciation for the political acumen of Delta students. He expressed a highly favorable attitude toward Delta s program and stressed the importance of a college edu¬ cation, not only for monetary reasons, but for its more important and lasting advantages. The Senator later made a television tape making it possible for students who were un¬ able to attend the live discussion to hear the senator ' s views later in the week. The televising of interviews is an important part of Delta 1 s program. 110 , Delta ! s second triinesteV was brightene d by a eighteen year old exchange student from Brazil, Carla Thereza Maria P etti— nati. Carla had been in the Lhited Stales only three days before she began classes. Her first impression here at Delta, she recalls, was the ’’extreme hospitality of the students, girls as well as boys. % _ Carla finds her college work here easier than her High School work m Sao Paula But thi she admits, may be due to the fact that she isnh taking a full college load because of her defective English. 111 Tong II Han One of the most popular visitors at Delta was twenty—five year old Tong II hhn, a North Korean pianist who gave a concert in the Delta Gymnasium on February 8. Tony, as he is known in this country, was brought to Delta by College of Letters 1 Professor, Thomas Cutshaw, who was also instrumental in getting his acceptance at the Julliard School of Music• Here, he was a pupil of the famed Madame Rosina Lhevinne. Tony f s day at Delta included a dinner with the College Council. Tony proved to be an ideal guest, and expressed delight at Delta, especially the Japanese Court. Tony also told of his enjoyment of American Jazz, listing Dave Brubeck as one of his favorite jazzmen. Quite opposite was his reaction to rock and roll. r Many things in life are associated with something else such as sausages and sauerkraut or a pretty girl with soft lights and violins. In this section I have combined different modes of clothing with a particular instrument. Many people will disagree with some of the combinations, and this is very likely, for there are many ways. I only hope that the following pictures will be a lasting memory of the clothes we wore at Delta 1961—1962. Shown above are from left: Margene Peck, Donna Drake and Sandy Schram. Margene is wearing a grey, white and mauve plaid skirt with matching grey vest. Donna is wearing a grey crew—neck cardigan which matches her grey, blue and white pleated skirt. Sandy ' s outfit is mauve in color. She has a pull-over cardigan, and the skirt has sewed down pleats. 116 Marwood Landskroner, pictured above, is wear¬ ing a v—neck pull-over in shades of grey. Dave Jones sports a wool over shirt in shades of red. Jim Noel, above, has on a v—neck sweater in shades of grey and yellow. A medium green vest is worn by Bob Ricker, below. 118 Ingrid Goff and her companion Fluffy are enjoying the fall sunshine. Ingrid is wear¬ ing black corduroy slacks. Her sweater is figured in black and white. Also found around Delta are Sue Wiggins and Donna Barns. Donm standing on the rock, is wearing striped knickers in various shades of rust. Her crewneck sweater is also brown. Sue ! s knickers are black plaid. Their knee soc ' match their sweaters. 119 The small black leather purse above is Betty Tanner’s. This is a small green suede purse owned by Karol Lee Brown. The pin above has two imitation pearls with a stone of jade attached to a gold rod. This is Margene Peck’s. vi Below is a Siamese bracelet. The background is black with silver designs. JoAnn Resmer, 120 Judy S kyrme , above, has on a camel colored winter coat The collar is black velvet. Geri McDaniels also has on a coat of camel. Her coat has a double row of white pearl buttons. Her tam is red. Jim Eldridge is set for winter in a black overcoat, 121 Ken Burke, left, ’’models 1 ’ a print shirt which is very new this year. For perhaps a more formal occasion, Carl Hill is shown in a sleeveless t—shirt. They are questioning current point—keeping methods. Fay DeShazo shows how to keep cool on the parallel bar The new style in tennis shoes is revealed by Ray 122 I a Pictured above are from left, Bob DeBoer, Nancy Kernstock, Tom Kraut and JoAnn Resmer, The girls cocktail dresses are black with Nancy ' s having a black and white skirt. The boys have on dark suits f 123 Many girls wore high heels while working in the library. Erika Wiederrich is wearing shoes of a reddish purple color. Kathy Plessner is wearing black flats with a pointed toe and strap. 124 Gail Bryant is wearing pajamas in pale blue trimmed with white lace. Ann Wolpert f s pajamas have the long shirt that originates from the Japanese style of dress. It is striped in many shades of red, rose and yellow. The bermuda length bottoms are a bright rose in color. 125 All set for rainy spring days are Marcia Samborn, middle, Ruthie Woulle on Marcia’s left and Pat Lundberg. Marcia’s coat is a light mauve color; Ruthie’s is a dark print accented by a black velvet collar. Pat’s coat is a dark brown and black plaid. The plaid is very small. 126 Jeanie Atkinson is shown with a very popular hair length this year. Her hair is blond, and is shoulder length. Liz Standish has brown hair which is much shorter than Jeanie ! s. She has bangs and also a curl which turns forward at the sides. Janet Resmer on the left and Pam Wintermute are looking at Delta through new spring sunshine. Janet’s shirt is blue with a striped blue, green and white sweater. Pam is wearing colottes of a light green. Her blouse is cream in color. The spring air brings out many students. Mary Bush on the left is wearing a brown sheath trimme with white. Laurie McCulloch has on a pale yello corduroy suit. 128 Guy Jeffery is enjoying the summer sun in khaki bermudas and a white short sleeved ski shirt. Ty Reed is wearing white clam diggers with a brightly striped cotton knit shirt Kryl Mauch is pictured here with a knit bathing suit. It has a flowered pattern in shades of blue. 129 The fog of ignorance lifts. Lifts and reveals a shrine to today s god: Education. In the middle of what used to be a quiet pasture, there has sprouted a brick, glass, and aluminum structure that houses tomorrows great minds. But for the present, these minds are rushing, laughing, sleeping, and inquiring. Later they will help keep that fog lifted; now they mu.st attend to gathering the knowledge that will help them in that later task. Now, at early morning, they must rush to their classes. 132 On the following four pages the pictures show Delta students utilizing the millions that poured into into the construction of these classrooms. Education has many facets: among these are the joint sharings of learning by both teacher and student. 134 135 136 137 138 - study and deep Machinery, to do a good job, must be fed oil, electricity, or gas. The minds of the students at Delta,.. 146 in order to function smoothly, must be fed, too. Only it is hamburgs, cakes, pies, chips or brownies in this case. Perhaps these are not so nourishing, but they are filling. i 147 150 In the afternoons the students devote their time to work, field trips...... i.V- 153 f r ' ■+J. 155 161 162 Night school, for those who realized only in adulthood that an education is as necessary in order to live in this day as is a job to support one’s family. Delta’s day ends with a faint wind wandering around a tree in the Court, and a night watchman echoing down a dark corridor. Strange, the life of a young college. How often will we remember its gifts to us? How often will we remember to be thankful that we had the opportunity to live a few short months here? How often. 163 Cross Country FIRST ROW: Dan Hayner, Bob Thorsen, Don Reder, Bob Hill, John Trabalka, Coach Dan Kinsey. SECOND ROW; Rick Jones, Tom Beechman, George Macmillan, Don Londo, John Carr. For most of the men it was the first year of college competition and with one season behind them, they should be a better team next year. Freshmen Bob Hill and Rick Jones were the most productive winners for the squad, both having posted times under 17 minutes. Some of the better members of the team along with Hill and Jones were Bob Thorsen, Dan Hayner, Don Londo and Dan Reyder. With only four sophomores on the team this year, Coach Dan Kinsey is looking forward to a large group of veteran runners next year and of course a better season. By placing 9th in the state meet (last place), they have a lot to work for and to look forward to in the seasons to come. The School of Nursing believes that the foundation courses in the humanities, the social sciences and the natural sciences are an integral part of the nursing curriculum and contribute to the student’s depth and breadth of understanding. Thus, the student will develop the ability to be self directing, to identify problems, and to work toward achieving satisfactory solutions. The students in the School of Nursing will begin their nursing education courses at St. Luke’s Hospital, Saginaw, Michigan, concurrently with courses offered in the College of Letters. We believe the students, in this manner, will be better able to understand the interrelationships of all they study thus leading to a greater integration of learning. The objectives of the School of Nursing include assisting the student (1) To develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and appreciation of values necessary for the nurse’s role in the comprehensive care of the patient, the community’s health, and the leadership skills as a member of the health team; (2) To develop the ability to participate actively as an informed and responsible member of the nursing profession involving professional problems; and, (3) To develop as a responsible and creative citizen of the community. It is hoped that the integration of nursing education and liberal arts will enable the students to sustain interest in their ultimate goal and prepare them to m bt the health needs of the future. Martin Donna Ruffertshofer Marlene M. Sivik Elizabeth A. Trombley Arlene Vanalst 179 College of Community Service John Brinn Dean of the College of Community Service 181 Dear Students: Delta College is undoubtedly many things to many people. It may be a meeting place of teachers and learners. It may be a vast building, a beautiful court, a laboratory, the Commons, basketball, television, a set of drafting instruments, or a delightful y earbook. It may be hard study, pleasant associations, or a sustained vacation. To me this new institution is a community of people—students, faculty, administrators, staff--all working together in a single endeavor, the job of learning. Man has sought for many centuries to know himself and his fellowmen. He has tried to formulate codes of conduct which would guarantee justice and result in maximum benefit to all men. He has more recently pursued the knowledge of nature and her laws and has attempted to turn the resulting scientific discoveries to the betterment of the race. It is natural that men, ever seeking knowledge, would come together to share their discoveries, discuss and test their ideas, modify their theories, and pass them on to eager young people who are similarly excited by the chance to learn. Delta is to me a place where these very things are happening. It is my hope that this may be always a part of the meaning of Delta College to you. Sincerely, John H. Zaharco 215 College of Letters Joseph Stokes Dean of the College of Letters Dear Students: The worth of any school has two chief measures: the purposes toward which it aims, and the effectiveness with which it reaches its goals. The aim of the College of Letters can be clearly stated. We must prepare students for the world in which they will have to live. All schools say this, but too much of our education seems to be imitating the generals who prepare for another war just like the one before. The world is changing too fast for that. Young people cannot be trained only for specific situations; they must be given the attitudes, the skills, and the flexibility which will enable them, from their own resources, to meet problems at present wholly unpredictable. Even that is not enough. The men and women of the future must have some interpretation of life and some ethical purpose in it which can make sense out of what would otherwise be a kaleidoscopic madhouse. They must have the security which comes from acquaintance with the greatness of the human spirit in our past, the confidence that comes from calm appraisal of the inter-relatedness and complexities of our present, and the courage that comes from tested ability to meet the new and different when they face it. Such are our purposes in the College of Letters. Of course no human institution ever completely achieves its objectives, and true evaluation of the effectiveness of what we do together now can only be made many years hence in what you then do alone. Nonetheless, we think we have made a good start, and I am confident that - if we can hold to our purposes - our students will perform to their credit and ours in the decades ahead.
