K' f This is the story of a shipand its men, told ina single chapter - a seven-month deployment to the Western Pacific. It is a story of long, golden days at sea, bitter, stormy nights with cold spray breaking over the decks, hard work and hard play, the fun of cook- outs and barbecues on the fantail, the tension of taut, quiet watchful- ness in at Vietnam harbor, and the magic of strange portsfwith names like Hong Kong, Vung Tau, Kaohsiung, and Sasebo. It is a story of a ship that is like a mother, a doctor, a friend - all rolled into one gray steel complex of industrial facilities and service functions. It is a story of two hundred sunrises and sunsets, chained together in a shared memory, but most of all, it is a story of men who left their homes as casual acquaintances andlreturned as brothers.
