Cheerleading at both Varsity and IV lev- els has changed at Delran and other Bur- lington County schools as a result of a court ruling and the involvement of the organization NOW. Because the ruling requires cheering squads to appear at an equal number of games for boys' and girls' athletics, the Delran squads were able to cheer only at home games dur- ing the winter sports season. This caused a tight schedule along with the necessity ,of withdrawing needed sup- port from the school's traveling teams. A further attempt to abide by another required change was opening the sport to both male and female candidates. Although this will continue to be a prac- tice at DHS, there appears to be minimal interest from the male population of the school. The squad is coached by Connie Papp and captained by Laura Killino. - High Standards for Cheerleaders Cheerleading is considered a sport in which participants are awarded with lv and Var- sity letters and pins like any other inter- scholastic sport, Tryouts are so competitive that at times candidates are required to pass a written exam along with a compre- hensive physical demonstration of athletic ability. judging for tryouts is done by out- side coaches along with school coaches not involved in the sport of cheerleading. To be a cheerleader, not only do grades have to fall within those stated in the eligi- bility rules, but also the candidate must possess poise, pep and personality. Squads are open to male and female students alike. The IV squad cheers at home for the lV boys' and girls' basketball teams.
