Previously a group which merely took to the field and played, the Marching Bears now approach band with much enthusiasm because they are involved in performing intricate formations and have an exciting new sound. Practices which consumed many hours last fall paid off. The very' first time the band competed and was judged professionally, on November 29 in Millville, its members captured third place in a field of twelve. Further, the Bears took a first place in the Moorestown Christmas Parade. Latella has been quoted many times saying, l'l don't want just a high school band, l want a superior band! The DHS Marching Band is becoming just that! Ready for another competition. Raphael doing his famous Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. 1 ual. i if s in Kneeling: S. Rich, S. Trotter, D. Not only does the book have a different appearance and order but also there has been a reduction in its cost making it a true bargain in today's econ- omy. ln addition, a new approach was taken to market the publication. A slide tape presen- tation was given in two assemblies in Octo- ber resulting in the greatest number of books purchased yet, 585, by the students of DHS. Cheerleading at both Varsity and IV lev- els has changed at Delran and other Bur- lington County schools as a result of a court ruling and the involvement of the organization NOW. Because the ruling requires cheering squads to appear at an equal number of games for boys' and girls' athletics, the Delran squads were able to cheer only at home games dur- ing the winter sports season. This caused a tight schedule along with the necessity ,of withdrawing needed sup- port from the school's traveling teams. A further attempt to abide by another required change was opening the sport to both male and female candidates. Although this will continue to be a prac- tice at DHS, there appears to be minimal interest from the male population of the school. The squad is coached by Connie Papp and captained by Laura Killino. The club is designed to enhance self-esteem and self- confidence through its members. Social responsibility and attitudes are attained by meeting and competing with other high school students at the regional, state and national levels, while their marketing and free enterprise skills are enriched. DECA is learning and DECA is fun! End and Phipps Place in Competition By participating in a variety of activities and competitions, members of Future Business Leaders of America QFBLAJ gain a better understanding of business. ln the regional and state competitions, students compete against students from other schools in dif- ferent areas such as typing, stenography, accounting, business lavv and math, data processing, job interview, etc. At the regional competition on February 21, loyce Phipps placed 7th in the office procedures event and Lorraine End placed 4th in the Steno I event. g 159 CDE Program Successful Cooperative Office Education QCOEJ at Delran High builds the gap between the completion of secondary school and the beginning of business careers. Through this program, the school and the com- munity work together to train qualified interested students. The enthusiasm and cooperation of business people from Delran and surrounding and communi- ties and the capable business students who participate are two important fac- tors in the success of the COE program, coordinated by Mrs. Phyllis Winston, which is now in its fifth year.
