Graham, jr. who has been principal for four of the five years that Delevan-Machias has been centralized. Mr. Graham is well liked by the student body and is an ardent supporter of all school functions. ln athletics, he is a modest winner and a good loser, a cardinal rule for all Delevan-Machias athletic teams. Mr. Graham is leaving us in June. The students of Delevan-Machias appreciate everything that Mr. Graham has done for them and wish him much success in his new position. v M, xl fi all V 1 f ,nf I I o 4,40 ADMINISTRATION Duane Sproul Superintendent Thomas H. ATIONAL HO OR SOCIETY Standing, L. to R.: Advisor, Richard Grahamg D. East- land, R. Roberson, R. Pierce, D. Dedrick, 1. Kuhn, I. Nichols, I. Sproul. Seated: G. Accurso, S. East- land, E. Wilder, K. The National Honor Society serves to honor those students who, in the opinion of the faculty and members of the society, have been outstanding in four fields of endeavor-scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Membership, once attained, is permanent, as long as the student continues to meet these four qualifications. Candidates are selected in May of each year, from those students of the 10th, llth, and 12th grades who have a scholastic average of 8571. or more. One service of the National Honor Society is to make scholarships available to its members through competitive examinations. VARSITY Selling pop at all home basketball games, initiating new members, developing interest in various type athletic contests are all routine activities for a varsity club member. This year Bill Bruyere, john Faust, Bill Warren, Bruce Fletcher, Ronnie llowell, and Gen'e Stangl were accepted as new members. Through graduation, we will lose jim Sproul, Bob Roberson, Bob Anderson and Norman Williams. Our trip to the Buffalo vs. Syracuse hockey game highlighted the year's activities. The acquisi- tion of a new washing machine for washing athletic equipment has been our largest contribution to the school. econd Row L. to R.: Coach Malinoski, N. Wil- liams, C. Blackhall, B. In addition, Duane won the State Dairymen's League award, and the Chapter won the Section award. In july, our chapter won the bi-county Dairy judging contest again. Our chapter placed second in state competition in the cooperative activities contest. In the fall, fair activities produced many blue ribbons for members and the chapter. The boys placed third in the annual achieve- ment contests at Portville. Trips to Kansas City to the National Convention, New York State Fair and Farmers' Week at Ithaca were enjoyed by various members during the year. The Father and Son banquet was very enjoyable with State President, Joe Martin, as our guest. 32 Tlx W1 zrigizwlg L. ga R.: R uh ' 7' M0ud,-I S. 'f K- Willialn ' Spmui, R. After summer recess, D-M's squad of athletics retumed to the Alma-Mater and climbed into foot- ball togs to resume war on the opposing schools. After three weeks of grinding into shape, D-M successfully met Hinsdale at Delevan and the season was under way. Another win over Limestone made D-M even happier. The big test was coming! D-M was to lock homs with Little Valley at the county seat and the winner would probably take the crown. All who saw the game won't easily forget it. D-M consistent- ly bulled through and around Little Valley and then would suddenly draw back and send 'em deep with a pass. Early in the second quarter, half-back, Bob Roberson was badly shaken up and re- ceived a broken nose. ,He didn't know it at the time and continued playing. At the end of the third quarter, D-M led by 27-7 and needed only a matter of minutes for a victory. But iniuries took their toll and the D-M attack stalled, ran out of gas and stopped. The margin dwindled and L. V. surged ahead. D-M made a final attack but L. V. withstood it and took top honors in a 34-27 victory. The following week D-M faced West Valley and waited too long to start playing and took a 45-46 defeat which ended in almost complete darkness. The rest of the season went well. D-M warped Ellicottville 48-29 and wound up the season in a blaze, beating West Valley 44-20. Congratulations are certainly due to this D-M team. 35 l L BA EBALL I953 Crack! Wood met leather and an easy grounder went out to the Little Valley short-stop. He scooped the ball easily and whipped his peg. Suddenly the D-M bench went wild, for the ball was sailing high over the second basemen's reaching glove. This was the break and D-M's runner on the third base streaked for home and then came the umpires cry of safe! D-M had broken the extra inning tie and had won the Catt. County Class C Championship. It had been a good season and D-M was almost satisfied. Hinsdale and West Valley both lay behind, both victims of D-M. Also there was Holland and Cattaraugus who were defeated in non- league tilts. Our defeats had come from Arcade and West Valley'but we were the Champs. D-M now went to Salamanca to meet Clymer for the Bi-County Championship and to revenge a basketball defeat. The game was a pitching masterpiece with Roy Scott and jim Sproul sharing honors. Roy for his one run pitching and jim for his booming 2 run homer early in the game. The score stood at that, 2-l favor of Salamanca. The Team traveled now to Hamburg to meet Holland in a sectional play-off, where they were plagued by errors and batting weakness and came off short by six runs. The score was 10-4. Al- though we didn't go all the way, everyone knows we had a great season. 36 - si I7 u Y 3 f l l 5 jg - Coach Malinoski X N 1, Delavan-Machias was getting up in the wor - The word around school was that we would be a Class B school for basketball. This rumor wa -1 fied when a count of boys in High School showed us three over the limit. The plan was this ' M would play her regular C schedule and at , . ,, . . . season s end would meet the 2nd team in B and if victorious, she would play the lst team for the cup. D-M was confident. She had lost no starters and was further strengthened by a 6 ft. 3 in. transfer student, Tom Truesdale. The C schedule seemed a breeze for D-M and she had a six game streak going before she knew it. Suddenly the roof fell in. Hinsdale came visiting and brought along four points more than we had, and D-M went for a deep six 57-53. D-M bounced back and beat Holland 56-36 and started another streak. D-M was looking already to the B play-offs. D-M cruised along for four more games, winning all of them handily when it happened again. D-M went to Hinsdale determined to right the wrong but the bobcats had other plans. Behind Ken Fairfield's 32 points, Hinsdale clawed a 56-51 victory and became the first team to beat us twice in two years. D-M used no set offense against Little Valley for there were rival scouts in the stand but they still rolled up a 66-45 victory to end the C season. Now came the play-off. Allegany had come in on top of the B league with Portville second so we had our work cut out. A week and a half of hard work preceded the Portville game. D-M perfected her 2-3 offense and got set for the tilt which was to occur at the Olean High School gym. D-M was keyed up but not scared. They played a cool deadly game and Portville went down 58-42. The final test was meeting Allegany four nights later. A crowd of 850 fans were present to cheer on their favorite and although Allegany had the odds, D-M had the crowd. The game started with the flurry of baskets, too many of which were Allegany's. However, D-M settled down'and the game got close. D-M would draw up on Allegany and then the gap would widen. Finally, in the last quarter, D-M made a final bid and drew within 2 points of the Blue Devils but fate said no and the game ended at 52-48, Allegany getting the win. D-M's first try in fast company didn't quite make it but we are certainly proud of our team. 11 P . Q ---' Y 5 ,f X x . ,V 331 'Z sf- N , ' kk J K ,V NX .. Q- ' N A . 'L A'Ax g A wp I K B' ' x.
