It would be a tough assignment to follow her for even a day. She travels to the far ends of the school district, checking on illness and ab- sentees, not to mention the time she spends at the three school buildings ready to give her advice and assistance to those who come to school not feeling so well. With her cool hand and a few soothing words from her, our pains usually vanish. Those movies, which add so much to our individual classes and to school life in general, are all the result of Miss Baker's efficient handling of the Audio- Visual Department. The Staff wishes to honor Miss Baker with the 1953 edition of the FLASH in appreciation of her time and efforts so well spent in behalf of the school. 2 ' X N J' Duane Sproul Superintendent Bills, transportation, personnel, main- tenance, and numerous other problems confront the Board of Education at their monthly meetings at the various three school buildings. We appreciate what they are trying to do for the advancement of education in our school district. They give their time generously in order to make Delevan-Machias Central School a better organized school system. Gloria Kemnitz Clerk Second Row, L. The year has been exceptionally pleas- ing to me because you, the Student Body, have shown that you appreciate the IIBILY things the Board of Education and Faculty have done in your behalf. If I were asked for advice, I would remind those of you who leave D.M.C.S. this year to leave with a vision of hope for the future and with a backward glance of fond memory for the years spent in school. an Om., H CWI: TLMUWWAW. Entrance re- quirements into schools of nursing have been discussed and simple nursing procedures demonstrated. An annual visit to a School of Nursing Open House has given the prospec- tive nurses a glimpse of real nursing life. Attractive silver and blue pins identify the group. Financial assistance will be given by the Club to any member entering a School of Nursing. Candidates for the National Honor Society are selected from those students of the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades who have a scholastic average of 8575 or better. Those candidates, who, in the opinion of the faculty and present members of the society, are considered out- standing in character, service to the school and community, and leadership qualities are then elected to membership. Once elected, a student remains a member as long as he con- tinues to maintain the high standards of scholarship, leadership, service and charac- ter. The Varsity Club has definitely found its lace in high school life at Delevan-Machias. q'he roup, an athletic organization, concerns itselgwith athletics and sportsmanship. Sponsorship of an intramural basketball lea ue, providing cold drinks at all home bas- ketball games, and the creation of the Varsity Club Award presented to graduating Seniors for athletic ability, are all maior accomplish- ments. On the social calendar, the trip to Buffalo to watch the Harlem Globetrotters vs. College All-Stars, held the spot during the past year. The Varsity Club plans to be even busier in the future, enlarging the scope of its func- tions for the advancement of Delevan- Machias. For just any book take a look in the library. Reading improves your mind. Library Club members are always willing to help you. There are magazines and files of pictures and maps prepared and kept neat by the Library Club. Come in any time and you are always welcome. There is no frigate like a book '. 6115 B. Nonrae. 115 Williams, C. Weidinger 33 .Cibrary Second Row, L. to R R Wolfe, M. The Delevan-Machias Chapter of the F.H.A. is affiliated with both the State and National Organizations. To raise money for our service projects, we have held a ba e sale, skating party, sold popcorn balls, and yarn dolls. As our proiects, we have supplied Christ- mas gifts to the Red Cross and dresses to a Mission in the South. Press 61116 The Press Club is organized under a new advisor this year. She is Miss Victoria Eade of the Commercial Department. Members of the club are from the Senior English Class. The paper has a new name, Del-Mae Data, sug- gested by one of the members. During the year, the staff toured the Olena Times Herald , and had the experience of being on the spot when the news of the plane crash involving the four Niagara Univer- sity students came in. Mol' After many calls for write-ups, pictures, names, and all of the other items that make up the FLASH, the staff settled down to work with frequent headaches over s missing pic- ture or somebodz' we forgot to put in the hook. With the help o lliss Earle and her Shorthand and Transcription Class, we got all of the material typed and ready to go to the publish- er. Everyone has his fingers crossed several times while waiting for the first print of the FLASH to come hack so we can see whether we put the names of the F.F.A. under the F.H.A. girls picture or some other major tragedy such as that. The Staff hopes s ain this year, as in every year, that the f953 version will he the best ever. 49' 49 01 36 4?,g.f 5 X naps 3 5 1 R Ill' .- fx . 6 mfs l Q i 1 .J 1 WW, Q. Oh my aching back! That was the gen- eral opinion of all the hardy Del-Mac athletes after the first few days of prac- tice for our 1952 football season. The first week was spent in getting rid of the kinks which resulted from soft summer living and after this prelim the boys settled down to real work. This work produced miracles. D.M., who rated low on the C league totempole blossom- ed out with a stonewall line and back- field defense, and a good passing, better running offense. The first test of ability was staged at the Delevan athletic field against Little Valley. After a fair first half the boys were down by one touchdown, but things grew worse. In the third quarter D.M. managed one T.D. but Little Valley re- taliated with three. Suddenly D.M. ex- ploded with an amazing string of three touchdowns in the same number of min- utes. However, this rally was not enough and D.M. went down to a three point defeat. Down from this loss D.M. went to Arcade where they suffered a 34-l2 smashing in the annual night game. A team with two losses, and no wins has no' right to be cocky, but D.M. was just that when they arrived at West Valley and they were even more cocky when they returned after trouncing W.V. 42-24 for D.M.C.S.'s first football win in history. This win was just what the Doc fMalinoskiJ ordered. Now thoroughly pepped up D.M. crashed to an easy vic- tory over Ellicottville. D.M. was now carrying a 2-2 record to Olean's Brad- ners Stadium to face Hinsdale. The game was a classic and was climaxed by Gary Relyea's 64 yard run to make it 27-0. With revenge as a motivating force D.M. clashed once again with powerful Arcade, and in an amazing exhibition of teamwork, overwhelmed the Orange and Black by a lopsided score of 37-13. The Ellicottville game was very dif- ferent from other games in many ways. The 48-0 score four favorl was the worst blanking any team had received all year, and the game was climaxed in a raging snowstorm which all but ob- scured the white clad Ellieottville players. Although we lost the title by three points to Little Valley, the season was very satisfactory in that the football jinx at D.M. had been broken. We all look forward to next year's season which we all hope will bring D.M. het first football title. VARSITY BASKETBALL l952-1953 SEASON As can be seen by the scores, this was a very successful season for the boys from D.M. In the course of winning 15 out of 16 ball games, we captured the Class C League Crown for Catta- raugus County. It wasn't easy, however, as it went right down to the last game before the team actually won the race. This game was against Limestone on the Limestone court and it was for the championship of our league. The team came through to play one of its best games of the year and defeat Limestone in a thrilling game. All of the boys and Coach did a wonderful job this year. Mike Weise and Dick Schaper were high in league scoring and led the team to many a victory. Max Brown, Bob and Dick Roberson, Roy Scott, and jim Sproul all did excellent playing. We all wish the team the best of luck in the coming play-off games. Cheerleaders all agree that it was fun this year for such a We want to thank Miss Eade for her help and also Mr. Graham and Coach for helping with prac- tices and the school song. We will never forget this year with a new cheer here and there and always the question, How will we do it? Our brain- child was developed when we put two cheers into one. Never-' theless, we shared our laughs while cooperating with one another. dv' tex s'r o0 era' ' 4 . 0 Q X55 Apts of A sity cZhcvrAc cvs Vhwsiqy The Varsity Cheerleaders have had a wonderful time this year cheering to- gether. We want to thank Mr. Graham for his generous cooperation with us in planning Pep Assemblies and for letting us have those much-needed practices. It was nice of Coach and the boys to help us introduce our new school song.
