They learned to believe in their capabilities as well as their teammates. What they lacked in ability they made up for with a tremendous amount of hard work and desire. They were an enjoyable group to work with because they never knew when to quit. Miss Koenig Above: Christy Viator (31) was awarded ALL-DISTRICT ASD ALL-STATE. SUMMARY OF THE SEASON: At the beginning of the year we knew it would be a rebuilding year due to the loss of 3 starters from last years team. According to results of games, it would be termed as a disappointing season, but working with the young ladies that made up this team it was anything but disappointing. They worked hard to improve their skills and their attitude remained positive. They were a good group to work with thus the season was not a disappointing one in many respects. Moving from a disappointing and frustrating loss to Port Barre, the Panthers clawed back with convincing win after win, stumbling only to the eventual District Champion to finish with a regular season 8-2 record and a birth in the State Playoffs. In the playoffs, Delcambre beat a super football team in Ecole Classique with an extraordinary come from behind effort and then beat a determined but good Cotton port club. For the second time in three years, the State Championship was denied by the eventual Champion, Port Sulphur, thus ending one of the most electrifying and thrilling seasons in Delcambre High Schools’ History. FEELINGS ABOUT THE TEAM: There is really no clear cut way to describe the feelings that were shared by me, my assistants and the players. It's something that 1 11 always cherish. I guess, at best, one could say it was a trip into a world of excitement, disappointments, humor, and saddness all in one year. I’ll always remember the eagerness to learn, their drive to be better and their will to win. All this happened with very little experience on a new line and a completely rebuilt defense. There was talent, one cannot deny that, but every player contributed something and with all that, this team etched its mark into the hearts of the many supporters of Delcambre High Football. I was proud to be associated with them and I am sure everyone was proud of them also for they strived to make Delcambre High School a team to be reckoned with and a place to be respected. SUMMARY OF THE SEASON: 81-82 was a good season for our boys’ basketball team. Going from 5 to 14 victories in one year speaks for itself. Furthermore, the three trophies won and the one sportsmanship trophie doesn’t come easy at DHS. Consider that after Christmas we lost 6 games by an average of 5 1 3 points. It is conceivable that with a few good breaks we could have had an outstanding year and realized our goals of a winning season and making the state playoffs. We did however, play hard and sometimes very good basketball and our opponents knew they had played against good competition regardless of the outcome. 1981 S2 Boy a’ Baaketball Heaulim DHS OPPONENT 47 Vermilion Catholic 44 44 Hanson 46 48 Central Catholic 59 23 Gueydan 45 74 Era lb 86 39 Henry 49 89 Henry gueydan Carencro 41 31 67 27 82 48 K Brouaaard 64 32 Kaplan Aboeville High 78 33 86 Eraib 40 84 Loreauville 66 60 SL Joe 67 61 Central Catholic 49 53 North Vermilion 77 46 Hanaon 61 60 Vermilion Catholic 56 62 Plataane 86 60 E BrouMard 62 40 North Vrrmilion 42 62 Plaisance 62 38 Gueydan 36 74 Eraih 41 47 Catholic High 46 67 Henr 53 67 56 Henry TVurfinga 39 62 Henry 18 42 Eratb 40 Seniors And All-District Senior Basketball Players Gerard Vincent and Handy Derouen Senior Randy Derouen made All-District in basketball. Summary of the season: The 1982 track season supplied all the excitement and satisfaction that a coach could hope for. The satisfaction came from seeing a group of young men work hard and improve steadily. The excite- ment came from seeing these same young men meet a challenge, and compete with all their hearts, the night of the district track meet. Even if we had not won the district championship I would still have been proud, because I think the track members learned a valuable lesson that night. When- ever you begin an endeavor you should try your best, because win or lose you can always be proud of yourself, if you don’t, you will regret it for the rest of your life.
