LeBlanc, alert defense propel Delcambre to win DELCAMBRE — The Delcambre Panthers used the running of Todd LeBlanc ,and alert defensive play, recovering four of its opponent’s fumbles, to take a 12- 8 victory over Church Point High School Friday night here. The Panthers scored first in the contest when Quarterback Benny Thibodeaux lofted a 25-yard pass to Jeff LeBlanc with 10:25 left in the first half. The six-play drive covered 39 yards. The kick for the point after failed. The Delcambre defense turned the ball over to the offense in the fourth quarter when Kirk Laviolette recovered a Church Point fumble at the visitors’ eight yard line. Three plays later Duke Landry scored from one yard out. The kick for the PAT failed. Church Point scored its only TD in the final quarter following Delcambre’s touchdown when it put together a 70-yard drive in thirteen plays. Quarterback Blair Guidrv completed a ten-yard pass to Larry Charlotte for the touchdown. A pass attempt for the PAT fell complete to put the final score at 12-8 Fullback Todd LeBlanc was the leading rusher for the Panthers with 75 yards in 12 carries, and with 37 yards in 14 carries Landry and Laviolette were the defensive leaders for Delcambre; Landry intercepted three Church Point passes and Laviolette intercepted one pass and recovered one fumble. Next week the Panthers will be at. home to entertain Plaisance High in a District 9-A contest. Delcambre routs Erath 21-0 on sloppy field ERATH — In a tense atmosphere, reminiscent of the rivalry present in an LSU-Ole Miss encounter, Delcambre scored three touchdowns to roust Coach P. M. Trahan’s Erath Bobcats 21-0. After the game, Coach Trahan said simply, “Delcambre is a good team and they played a good game.” Players on both sides had to adjust their games in order to contend with the mushy, muddy state of the field Friday night in Erath. Coach Don Dunbar’s Delcambre High School Panthers made their initial move in scoring during the third quarter. Don Dunbar Jr. took the ball over from four yards out on a pitch out. Immediately following, Todd LeBlanc made good his attempt at an extra point kick to make the score 7-0, Panthers’ favor. With the Bobcats in possession of the ball on their own 15, Delcambre intercepted a pass and brought it in for a touchdown. At this point, Duke Landry successfully faked a kicking attempt and proceeded to run the ball in for a two point conversion bringing the score to 15- 0, Delcambre still on top. The third and final TD of the evening was accomplished by Todd LeBlanc who dived over the middle from three yards out. The extra point failed but the last tallies were on the board. The score stood 21-0, Delcambre the winner. However, the game was not completely one-sided. At one point, Erath threatened with a field goal attempt at the Panther 35 but failed. The Bobcats took Panthers on the move . . . DON DUNBAR Head Coach advantage of the Panthers twice by recovering two of their fumbles. This second win of the season keeps the Delcambre record immaculate as they are coming off on a win last week over the New Iberia Senior High ’B’ Squad. Next week, the Panthers will be playing against Church Point in Delcambre. Their district 9-A competition does not begin until the 28 of September when they will host Plaisance. Erath, who stands 0-1-1 in the season thus far, will travel to Gueydan next week to take on the Bears. District 6-AA competition will not begin for the Bobcats until October 12 when they journey to Holy Rosary of Lafayette. Delcambre scores in 4th quarter to win DELCAMBRE — Delcambre won a District 9-A contest Thursday night, narrowly beating a fired up Plaisance High team, 6- 0, in the first district game for both teams. An interception by Duke Landry late in the fourth quarter set up the lone Delcambre touchdown; Landry latched onto a stray Indian pass at the Plaisance 30 yard line and returned it to the 25. Seven plays later Halfback Don Dunbar scored on a three-yard run, with 1:46 remaining in the game. The PAT attempt failed. Landry also was the leading rusher for the Panthers, racking up 74 yards on 12 carries, and Larry Pickney was the leading runner for Plaisance with a meager 14 yards in 12 carries. Don Dunbar’s Panthers try to stretch their win streak to 5-0 next week against Teurlings in Lafayette.
