This year's activities, as presented in this publication, will be cherished by all of us in the years to come. I am indeed grateful to have been associated with this wonderful group. Delma Meaux, Jr. Yearbook Advisor 4 The good ship, DELCAMBRE HIGH, has sailed in and out of many ports. It has sailed on calm, choppy, and stormy seas. Always, it has come back home intact and sturdier than before. Throughout good or bad weather conditions, the captain must continuously instill confidence and hope to his crew. Towards this end Mr. Pershing Cashen, our captain, has achieved our most sincere respect. The Staff PERSHING J. CASHEN Principal - Delcambre High DAVE FREDERICK Assistant Principal MARY DUNBAR Secretary MARY LYNN SAUNIER Guidance Counselor Our appreciation to Mr. Dave Frederick and Mrs. Mary Lynn Saunier for their guidance in helping us with many troubled moments during our high school years. Many were the times that the strength of these two leaders inspired us toward achieving our set goals. Their presence made our lives a little more meaningful and created within us a desire to follow in their footsteps. To Mrs. Mary Dunbar, our hearts sing out praises for her infinite patience in achieving the every-day re- quirements placed upon her by the administration, faculty, and student body. Within our limited power we select our dear secretary as Mrs. Delcambre High School. 6 The Staff A tribute to Mrs. Mida Saunier MRS. MIDA SAUNIER Cafeteria 1947 - 1973 Twenty-six years ago in an old dressing room in back of the gymnasium, lunch was served to the students of the Delcambre High School. Through the cooperation of Mr. Pershing Cashen, newly appointed head coach, Mrs. Saunier was able to make the dressing room an acceptable kitchen consisting of only two large pots and an extra large spoon. Lunch was served on the stage on six wooden tables, handmade by Mr. Odey Hebert and Mr. Itney Saunier. Mr. C. J. Gonsoulin, the principal, had asked Mrs. Saunier to operate the cafeteria. She consented to help for only a few weeks but as each person has a destiny she remained until her retirement in 1973. Her first lunch consisted of black eyed peas and combread. As was the custom, he pre- soaked the peas the night before in two large pans. A surprise awaited her in the morning when she found that the swollen peas had overflowed and were scattered around the floor of the stage. Since this first experiment in cooking for a large group, she has prepared over 2 , 574,000 plates of some of the most delicious school meals in the parish. It is with great reluctance that we, the faculty and student body of the Delcambre High School, accepted her retirement. 7 Norma Dore Anna Sonnier Theresa Delcambre Vera Jackson Cafeteria Cafeteria Cafeteria Cafeteria Gloria Derouen Lou LeBlanc Jeanne Nell Landry Earline LeBlanc Cafeteria Cafeteria Cafeteria Cafeteria 8 Wilbert LeBlanc Custodian TRANSFER DRIVERS Ryan Trahan junior Delcambre Isaac Migues Kenwood LeBlanc Fred Aucoin Wilton Sonnier Second Second Second ANNA MENDOZA ANNA SAUNIER ANNIE RIDEAUX Third Third Third 10 r k USSAY PELLERIN Fourth (Homeroom) Language Arts YVONNE CAMPBELL Fifth (Homeroom) Reading - English DELMA MEAUX, Jr. Fourth (Homeroom) Soc. GRANDFATHER, why are all those 4th graders looking at me ... Because they love you my boy and they are so happy that we honored them as dinner guests. Look at Mr. Meaux, he's going to take our picture ... Flash. MR. JULES SONNIER, our beloved janitor is re- tiring. For as long as we can remember he has taken care of the main building, the cafeteria, the green- house and the plants around our campus. No one ever found this man sitting down. His hours were long but he faced each day with the energy of a much younger man. He was always ready with a cheerful Bon Jour to teachers and children alike. Retirement is just a word - we all know that this gen- tleman will never stop working, merely change loca- tion. We believe that education can and should be used as a means of fostering democratic ideals in a democratic society. We believe that education should be used to improve the well-being of all individuals, regardless of political, social, religious, or economic convictions. We believe that the dignity of each individual should be recognized and that his human personality and needs be respected. The ability to encounter life and its problems, as a responsible person, is the end result in the development of this personality. We accept the responsibility of creating an atmosphere that encourages responsive learning, promotes ac ceptable activities, and stimulates in each student a desire to achieve fulfillment. This atmosphere will contribute not only to the intellectual growth of the student but also to his physical, emotional, and social growth, all of which are essential in the development of personal character. We recognize the fact that in preparing each student for his role as a citizen, we must also teach the ap preciation of other forms of human expression, such as, music, literature, and the arts. We believe that learning is a continuous process and that only through learning will each student realize the values of an education.
