A yearbook is a small thing indeed. But it is big in so far as it portrays the spirit of a school. This, Surelyg yet it reflects more especially that particular quality that is its seniors. We trust that the quality has been excellent. Yet whatever excellence, whatever desirable quality there is in us, is there not by our own efforts, certainly, but by the efforts of so many who in never failing charity and kindness have inspired us while at Delbarton. Father Adrian, you have been such an example. As a friend you have been most kind to us. As a priest you have shown us a Wonderful charity. You have interested yourself, as Christ interested Himself, in those who have strayed into your life, devoting to us so very much of yourself that we, in turn, might devote ourselves to Christ . . . whatever the manner. And any man whose charity towards others is so great as to treat them as C-od means them to be treated is worthy, surely, of our humble dedication. You are this man, Father Adrian. The new ring is of gold with a deep green stone and has many symbolic meanings capturing the spirit of Delbarton. On the one side is the school coat of arms and the year of graduation. In the center of the seal stands the Benedictine Cross, surroun-ded by two rampant lions and two quarter moons. Under the seal are the Latin words SUCCISA VIRESCIT, which, translated, means Cut down, it grows up again. It is also the motto of the famed Abbey of Monte Cassino. This phrase, chosen for Delbarton, teaches our students the value of perseverance. In the top is placed a dark green stone, depicting the setting in which Delbarton is located. Our school is situated in the emerald hills of historic Morristown. The name of the school and its date of founding are surrounded by the Benedictine Cross. This latter represents the religious order of teachers at Delbarton . . . the monks of St. Benedict. On the other side is carved an arch. The arch has always had a special meaning. It is at the entrance to the Main Build- ing and a new, more modern arch, guards the entrance to Trinity Hall. Both sides have clusters of oak and laurel leaves. The oak is the symbol of strength, both of mind and of body,-while the laurel is the symbol ol victory,-victory over evil and ignorance. President HENRY JOSEPH HAYES CRASH Montclair, New Jersey j.V. The Green Wave captured its ninth straight crown in completing its final year in the North 'jersey Ivy League. Delbarton kept intact its record of never having lost an Ivy League contest. Much of the credit for the Green Wave's success must be given to head coach Mr. VVilliam Regan and to line coach Mike Barry. In completing his twelfth year as head coach at Delbarton, Mr. Regan extended his excellent record to 82 wins, 13 losses, and 4 ties. The 7-6 heartbreaking loss to Blair was the first defeat Delbarton has known since 1955. This year's squad compiled a record of 5 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie. The only blots on Delbarton's season was the loss to a strong Blair eleven and the tie to Newark. The Green Wave this year was led by Co-Captains Mike Minnig and Dennis Russell. The backfield stars included Iohn O'Gorman at Quarterback, Bob Benjamin at Fullback, and Halfbacks Dennis Russell, Frank Soriano, and Frank McGuire. The forward wall was made up of Ends Tom Maloney and Bob Lynyak, Tackles Mike Minnig and Iohn Donohoe, Guards Leo Geary and Barney Feeley, and Center Frank VValsh. Defense was a big point again this year. The Green VVave gave up just 25 points in seven contests. Tom Reilly and Ken Cote intercepted passes and line- backers Iohn Frisoli and Chris Holme made key tackles. Senior Bob O'Mara took care of the middle guard spot. Congratulations to a fine team, to a line spirit, and to a fine coach. L l WDIELBARTUN 63 NEWARK 6 On Friday, October 3rd the Green Wave opened its season against Newark Academy at home. Delbar- ton won the toss and elected to receive. Once under way the game was marked with the mistakes of an opening game. Late in the Erst half, Delbaxton got together its first serious drive. With a minute and a half to go in the half, Ken Cote took a handoff and cut off right tackle from seven yards out for the score. The conversion was no good and Delbarton lead 6-0 at the half. The second half was a standstill until midway through the fourth quarter, when Newark's Barowski took a pass on the Delbarton 40 yard line. Two plays later Curt Cetrulo went 40 yards for the score. Newark's conversion was no good. The Green Wave fought back, but an O'Corman pass was intercepted on the Newark 8 yard line. The clock ran out with the score tied 6-6. Delbarton started fast as Frank Soriano scored the first time the Green had the ball. Reilly had a Bne day scoring twice, once on a 55 yard pass play and again on a 48 yard interception. At the half Delbarton led 39-6. The reserves played the second half and extended the score to 52-6. Besides Reilly and Soriano, Cote, Benjamin, Denver and Zusi also found the Carteret end zone. With about 6 minutes left in the third quarter, Coach Regan Hooded the field with reserves. They, too, were not to be denied as they ran up two more scores. NIL-Cuire tried to run it over on our second try, but was stopped short hy the Blair line. The rest of the game was filled with unsuccess- ful Delharton drives. One by one Blair stopped each drive. Frank McGuire raced 45 yards for another score and fullback Bob Benjamin plunged over from the 3 yard line for the fourth touchdown. Hun dominated the Hrst.quar- ter as they marched to the Green Wave six. Here our line held, and we took over. The rest of the first half was a defensive battle. Midway through the 3rd quarter Donohoe recovered a fumble on the Hun 20 yard line. Three plays later Soriano went 18 yards over right end for the score. The same play worked again for the extra point and Delbarton lead 7-0. Delbarton hung on to their lead as Bob Lynyak thwarted a Hun drive by an interception. The season ended with a presentable 5-4 record, with two of the Green defeats coming at the hands of Morristown High and Hanover Park Regional High, both rated very high in county standings. The high- light of the season was the capture of the Ivy League Crown, a feat not accomplished by a Delbarton cross-country team in five years. Captains of the team were jim Birdsall and Ted Stearns, who ran third and fourth positions respectively. The team's number one man was Darryl Russell, but he was chased around the course all year by an extremely capable Iohn Thornton. Dan Durant was fifth man as well as the surprise of the year. The team's success had a great deal to do with Danny's terrific effort, and he was considered by Coach Passarelli as being equal in importance to the team's Hrst man. Other members of the team included sophomore Mike Wade and three outstanding juniors, Bob Findlay, Kevin Maher, and lim Moran. Despite being plagued by frequent key injuries, the cagers compiled an 11-9 record. The squad was captained by Senior guard Dan Cacchio, a top-notch leader and rugged competitor. His value to the team could be seen in their per- formance during the second half of the schedule when he was sidelined by a broken ankle. Dan had a very capable backcourt companion in deadeye junior Bob Findlay. Fink carried the brunt of the attack, and although injuries sidelined him for Eve games, he wound up as the team's high scorer. Bob averaged over sixteen points a game. Senior center Dennis Russell did yeoman service under the boards and was the squad's second high scorer. The two forward positions were-held down by juniors George Roif and Darryl Russell. George was a consistent scorer and could be counted upon to hit-in 88 double figures every game. Darryl was an important man, with his reliable rebounding and defensive play. A strong bench was a necessity this season, as injuries often prompted Coach Stilwell to go to his reserves to fill the gap. Two boys in particular deserve mention for their efforts, Senior Bob Lynyak and Sophomore Nick Marinaro. Both played well and were exciting to watch, Nick with his long arching two-handed set, and hustling Bob with his inspired play. Seniors Frank Walsh, George Martin, and Ted Stearns didn't get the call often, but when they did they responded with line performances. Frank specialized in rebounds, George in hook shots, Ted in fast-breaks. juniors Frank McGuire, Ken Cote, and jim Farrell, a real comer, all contributed their share to the winning campaign. Even though it was not an overwhelmingly success- ful season, there was a lot of spirit. We had a lighting team, a dedicated coach, and an avid following.
