Unify through Ieddership, sportsmanship Gaetano DeSapio President of Student Council This book is the face of unity-unblemished by dissention. yet the face of dissenters: characteristic of common coopera- tion, yet the face of individuals. As Student Council President I have had countless opportuni- ties to see unity manifest itself at Delaware Valley. Our Student Council has its basis in unity and cooperation. Students of five sending districts, we are united the first day that we enter Delaware Valley. Surrounded by many strange faces, each of us feels a need to find someone with whom we can begin to share our experiences. Soon we find that almost everyone has the same feeling, and we find ourselves united in friendship. Freshmen soon begin to unite as a class. They begin to real- ize that by staying together and thinking and acting in unity. they can stand united in the face of the upperclassman sway. Each individual class has its own establishment: the Sopho- more Sophistication, derived from the realization of not being Freshmen anymoreg the Junior Initiative, designed to show the school that Juniors are better than Seniors: and of course, there is Senior Superiority. These phases of unity assume proper perspective when compared to the true uniting force-school spirit and pride. School pride has its basis in the individual who is engaged in individual excellence. Pride inbeing able to help one another display the best we've got helps to develop team spirit-the spirit of unity. Everyone becomes a part of this team unit: either his individual nature will demand it, or his teammates will. The unity of an athletic team or any other group of individu- als who represent the school is soon recognized and appreciat- ed by the student body. This appreciation evolves into an esprit de corps which serves to unite students more than any one in- dividual or organization can unite any particular segment. This unity of pride and spirit does not confine itself to compe- tition' with other schools. We begin to take pride in the type of education we receive and the things that we can accomplish because of it. The bonds of unity experienced in high school serve not only to foster our education, but they establish a spirit for our lives, 4
