Dl LaWA r evaL Lev J o iN I Hicjfi SchooL SJ ' V) rrMNS yLvANIA t- :V; . fsf c - S The staff of THE DELAWARE presents this 1963 volume with pride. We hope you will find pleasure in leafing through these pages both now and in the years to come. For the second year our staff members, selected from grades seven to twelve, have functioned as a club. We have endeavored to record for you those familiar activities and classroom scenes which will help you recall the pleasant days of your high school career. We extend to the faculty our thanks for their cooper- ation in preparing this book and to the loyal businessmen our appreciation for their financial support. MR. ALBERT F. HEBERLIG We are proud to dedicate the 1963 DELAWAEIE to a teacher who has been in our school system for more than thirty years. Mr. Heberlig began his teaching career in Matamoras following his gradu- ation from Shippensburg State College in 1929. His continued service to this school system has made our aca- demic mathematics department one of the best in the state. For many years, Mr. Heberlig has sponsored the Conservation Club. This service club has greatly improved our school grounds through clearing, pest control, and replanting. As Student Council advisor, Mr. Heberlig has contributed an- other immeasurable service to our school. Many Student Councils have gratefully known his guidance. The students managed the Coun- cil, and yet Mr. Heberlig was always there to help and advise. Thank you, Mr. Heberlig. TO THE CLASS OF 1963: It is our hope that you have acquired the basic tools of learning such as skill in reading, writing, speaking and obtaining information from available reference ma- terials. A general understanding of the development of our culture is a tool that should help in evaluating and interpreting the problems of your time. It should be understood that you have not acquired a sufficient quantity of knowledge to meet your needs for a lifetime. However, with these tools and sufficient perseverance you can constantly add to your fund of knowledge that information which will be most useful to you. The tools of learning are similar to common tools in that they have no intrinsic value; their great benefit is released only when properly used. Of equal importance to the acquisition of knowledge is the ability to make proper social adjustments. Research has proved that over QO o of employees who were fired lost their jobs not because of the lack of ability to do the necessary work but be- cause of the lack of ability to get along with their fellow workers. They failed in the area of human relations despite adequate vocational skills. You are approaching a commencement - a beginning. You now have sufficient maturity and skills to make a searching analysis of yourself. What should be your re- lationship and attitude toward your Creator, friends and fellow citizens, parents, and employer or prospective employer? What are your responsibilities to family, com- munity, and nation? These are decisions that will be made. I hope and pray that you won ' t drift into them but rather will use all the skills and resources at your command to earnestly weigh all the evidence and then courageously make your decisions. I wish to extend to all of our seniors my very best wishes for happiness and success in your chosen fields. Seek and Ye shall find is not empty or old-fashioned advice: I recommend it to you. Leland Cramer Supervising Principal Administration TO THE CLASS OF 1963: Now you are poised like a missile about to be launched into space. In a short time each of you will be probing out into the world to follow your individual way through life. This way will probably turn through many phases as you go along. At one time the breaks will be with you and, at another, the going will be difficult. The way in which you ride out the good times and the bad will be dependent upon how much you are willing to give of yourself to any endeavor. If you sit at home and wait for opportunity to come to you, it may be a long time before it arrives. Generally, you will create your own good fortune through your work and efforts. Nontheless, don ' t forget the pat on the back or the words of thankfulness to those who help you along the way. It will be these helping hands that will carry you up the ladder of success. Like any space probing missile, you will be seeing and meet- ing many new things as you cruise along through life. As you experi- ence these new problems, you will form new ideas and philosophies. Be alert to change, and courageous enough to explore these new pos- sibilities; above all remain flexible. May you enjoy God ' s blessing on your path through life. Karl R.
