HF w •, I ■© We, the members of the Class of 1989, dedicate our yearbook to a man who ' s loyalty and dedication to Delaware Valley College should be an inspiration to everyone. He graduated from the National Agriculture College in 1952 with a degree in Dairy Husbandry. After spending a couple of years of employment outside the College, he returned in 1955 to become Registrar, a post he held until his retirement in June, 1989. During his 33 years as Registrar, he became known by members of the faculty, administration and staff as a man of many lists. He compiled lists of all sorts, mostly using the voluminous records he kept merticulously stored in several cardboard shoeboxes. But to the students he became known as a helpful, cooperative person. He spent countless hours helping us straighten out conflicting class schedules, checking on our credits and making sure our grade point averages were up to date. If something didn ' t check out just right, he wouldn ' t give up until the problem was solved. . We came to know him as a man who was eager to help, no matter how trivial or insignificant our problems seemed. It is for these reasons and many, many more that the Class of 1989 dedicate this edition of the Cornucopia to Mr. Oskar Larrson Class of 1952. ADMINISTRATION William H. Rorei III President Russell K. SOCCER 1988 The 1988 soccer season turned out to be somewhat disappointing. There were a number of reasons. The most outstanding reason being that injuries were suffered by six off the players within the first two games. The lack of scoring punch and the fact that we play one of the toughest schedules of teams in Division III, was another key factor. Although the team as a whole had a disappointing season out- standing performances were turned in by players throughout the season. Senior goalkeeper Ray Shilling played some terrific defen- sive games during the season. Tom Lewis was voted outstanding defensive player by the team and Troy Eutermoser was voted out- standing offensive player and MVP by the team. One really bright spot for the club was the selection of Troy Eutermoser to the Suburban All-Star team as a defensive back. The team competed against an All-Star team from the Soccer Team of the Philadelphia College. The schools are representative of Division I schools. Troy played an outstanding game that ended with the Suburban Star winning the match by a score of 2-1. The team was led by transfer student Joan Kinley who finished in the top three in all of the dual meets, plus being a medalist in both the Ursinus and Drew Invitational meets with sixth place and second place finished respectively. For her efforts, Joan was voted most valuable harrier for the fall season. Joining Joan in the top three team scorers were freshmen Kim Douglas and Sandy Slanker. Sophomore Dawn Reckner, who was injured for most of the season, returned to form for the confer- ence championship finishing fourth for the team and helping the team to a respectable 1 3th. place finish. The other two ladies who saw major action during the season were captain and co-captain Sue Barnhurst and Deanna Smith. For her efforts as team leader. Sue received the Coaches Award. Also competing and scoring in a number of meets were senior Colleen Fredricks and sophomore Chris Druck. The outstanding meet for the Lady Aggies was the Drew Invitational in which the team placed third. Also in their losing encounters, the ladies represented themselves well. Will I ever make il to the end 11 Delaware Valley College Men ' s Cross Country Fall, 1988 After losing five of the top six run- ners from the 1987 team through graduation, the 1988 cross country team experienced a difficult season ending up with a 2 and 6 record. Leading the team in scoring this year was sophomore Art Ruediger who was the team ' s top scorer in all the dual meets. Art also was a sixth place medalist in the Ursinus Invita- tional, and for his efforts the team voted him the most valuable harrier award. Plagued by various problems for most of the season, senior captain Don Griffing finally came into his own in the last two meets, the MAC Championships and the NCAA Re- gional Championship Meet finishing first for the team in both races. Also during the dual meet season, Don ran two man for the team, and for his efforts he was awarded the Coaches Award. Rounding out the top scorers for the team were sophomore Steve McCarty, freshman Frank Filor, and senior Hardy Rueb. Also seeing ac- tion during the season and scoring in at least one meet were senior Jim Enoch, freshman Ian Phelps, junior Mark Brinksy, and freshman Dave Fanders. The highlight of the season came in the MAC Championship Meet where the thin clads handily bested Kings who had beaten them earlier in the season plus running apprecia- bly better against all of the teams which had devastated them earlier in the season. Dan Law going for the shot. Time to celebrate the win. WOMEN ' S BASKETBALL Overall the 1988-89 season of the Delaware Valley Women ' s Basketball team was a very memorable one. At the beginning of the year, Coach Pento asked the players to realize a goal and strive to attain that goal throughout the season. The goal was to reach (18-6). The Lady Aggies bolted out to a 6-0 start and had to break for the semester. Never before had the lady Aggies been so aggressive. In returning to action, Del Val captured the 1st Place Trophy at the Wilkes Tournament. Never before had the Lady Aggies won a tournament. In that tourney, Michelle Shirk, Laura Rotz (MVP), And Rhonda Kill were placed on the all-tourney team. Also, never before in the history of Del Val has a woman reach the 1000 point plateau. This year, Michelle Shirk attained the plateau. Congratulations Michelle, on a fine career. It is expected that within the next year Laura and Rhoda will be right beside Michelle. Cooke Hall was heavily damaged by a three alarm fire on December 12, 1988 but, thanks to an all-out effort by several departments, was renovated in time for the spring semester. Three firefighters sustained minor inju- ries but none of the 72 students living in the dorm was hurt during the blaze. Bucks County Fire Marshal John C. Matter concluded the cause of the fire was an unattended candle left in a second-floor room. Students displaced by the fire were housed in other rooms on campus. With final exams scheduled to begin the next day, students were given the option of ei- ther taking the tests as scheduled or post- poning them to a later date. Within 12 hours after the blaze was de- clared under control, work crews were be- ginning an intensive cleanup and recon- struction effort to make the dorm livable by Jan. 16, the date students were sched- uled to return to campus. At the same time, officials worked with students and their insurance companies to assess damages to personal belongings. In addition to postponing exams, the College offered to loan textbooks to students, make the stenographic pool available to copy notes, and offered interest-free loans of $150 to $200 to students. Finally, on Jan. 16, workman finished all but a few minor details on the dorm and students were able to move into their rooms. WIN LOSE OR DRAW Did 1 draw that? I think I know what it is! Home Sweet Home BREAKING GROUND for the new dairy at DVC d -BP Delaware Valley College ' s new Dairy Science Animal Biotechnol- ogy Center was officially dedicated during ceremonies at A-Day this Spring. Groundbreaking for the Center took place at Homecoming on Oct., 1 1988. The new dairy all ready features housing for 50 milk cows and 50 young stock, a milkroom, silos, a feed mixing center, a milking parlor offices. In the future, a embryo transfer center, milk process- ing room, a student office and record room, locker room facilities will be added. The transfer unit will benefit students by giving them an opportunity to receive up to date technical training in some of the most specialized areas of the dairy industry, such as estrus synchronization the marketing of embryos. The college anticipates that the entire facility will attract increased outside research projects as well. I feel very strongly about the importance of this project, said Dr. Plummer. We are building a state of the art facility that will move our Dairy Science program into the next century. Prior to constructing the new facility, Delaware Valley College ' s dairy operations were carried out on a 42 acre farm on the north side of Rte. 202. That property was sold in November 1988. Operations at the new facility have been going on since approximately March 1, 1989. Smile you ' re on candid camera. CAREER DAY w V . ' sLi A ■ur 40V 4 1 v L V AGRICULTURE AMBASSADORS Brad Bittner and Sandic Sole The Ambassador program was started in Spring 87 as a way to have a formal student representation at agricultural events in Pennsylvania. Brad Bittner and Sandie Solemine along with their advisor. Dr. Plummer associate Dean of Agriculture, have met with politicians and successful dairymen, livestock breeders and agronomists. They have also met with many alumni to tell them of all the progress at D.V.C. Their fall semester started off at the ground breaking ceremony for the new dairy at Homecoming. Later that day. Brad and Sandie sat in on the annual alumni luncheon meeting where they were interviewed by WBUX and were formally presented to the alumni executive committee. The big event of the year for Brad and Sandie was Farm Show 89 . The week started off with the pre show dinner at the Mar- riot in Harrisburg where they dined with the elite of agriculture. There they met their Pcnn State counter parts. Mr. Agriculture, Jim Laley and Ms. Agriculture, Mary Ann Keith. The next morning Brad and Sandie met with PA secretary of Agriculture Boyd Wolf and attended the Farm Show brunch. Afterwords, they participated in the opening ceremonies of the Farm Show by presenting Governor Casey with a gift from the college. The next few days were spent recruiting in the D.V.C. booth We met perspective students and parents, alumni. Along with other D.V.C. students and faculty, they spread the word that Del Val was the place to be for learning and the place to go for qualified graduates. A few weeks later. Brad and Sandie were invited to the Pennsylvania Cornenopia dinner in Hershey; a dinner to celebrate the state ' s agricultural commodities. They were entertained by a stirring campaign speech by Arlen Spector on drug control in Pennsylvania. In the spring. Sandie attended a global affairs conference at D.V.C. Many speakers presented problems and solutions for our precious environment. A-Day is always a big day for every Del Val student. In between working for their clubs. Brad and Sandie gave hay wagon tours for the members of the Pa Agricultural promotion board and their families. Later in spring, D.V.C. was represented by their ambassadors at a PA Agricultural board meeting at the Philadelphia Horticultural Society Building. Brad and Sandie also participated in the Fall and Spring open houses hosted by the admissions department. The ambassadors were a part of a panel that answered questions about D.V.C. Later that day. they gave group tours of the campus. It was a busy and exciting year for Brad and Sandie. Brad retired from his position, after serving two years, Sandie will contin- ue to represent D.V.C. through the 89-90 school year with Brad ' s replacement. FROM THE DESK OF THE AMBASSADOR: Dear Aggies, I just wanted you all to know that it has been an honor and privilege to serve you and Delaware Valley College as the first Agricultureal ambassador. I had a great time and met many wonderful people. With the support of Dr. John Plummer, Linda Dolby and others, we accomplished much in our first two years of the program. As I leave my position in the hands of Doug Linde, I can only hope I made a difference. Good luck Doug and Sandie, I wish you the best. Yours in Agriculture, Brad A. CLARENCE EARL SMITH JR. 37 Bergen Dr. West Milford, NJ 07480 mam N ifi ■■■228 GRADUATION Almighty God, thank you for your mere) and grace upon us to this cr hour .lust .is you watch over clumsey aging professors and preachers, so we recognize thai you have brought these graduates through losses and gams, through crises and achievements to tins time We acknowledge your faithfulness to this class, as some of them have gone through the Cooke (ire and reconstruction; through an academic cortege of faculty counsel and friendship; through care and support of their families; and trrough courses and finals to this commencement. Thank sou for those in this academic race of 1989 who did not fall bj the wayside in that first freshman semester, or lose heart in that sophomore sprint across the back stretch, or despair in their junior year around the back side, or lose vision in that senior sighting of the finish line to the culmination of that race today. As they awaken in the tomorrow beyond college, whether as employees or employers, as servers, or entrepreneurs, may your faithfulness guide them boldly into opportunities for which they prepared and into which they must grow. May their offspring to a fourth generation get to enjoy their company and benefit by the decisions that have been made here. Hallow these valuable, historic moments which we have together, as colleagues and families, as you annoint the heart and lips of our speaker, and as vestiges of Abilene, KS and Washington D.C. merge with Gettysburg and DVC. I ask for the sake of your matchless name. Amen. Rev. Dr. Richard Ziemer 3 MAY 21, 1989 I guess we ' ve all gotten scared at the thought of graduating, at one time or another. But, WHAT has motivated us all to be here today? There are 2 modes of motivation: A motivation to avoid failure, and a motivation for success. That is an abstract concept. How would YOU define what success is? Success is nothing more than a perception. It is for each individual, as completely unique as that individual. For some, attaining money is perceived as success. For others, carrying on a family business or farm is success. For some, helping others is considered success. Today, we are all drawn here together with, if nothing else, one thing in common- WE ARE SUCCESS. For each of our own reasons, we have all stuck it our (and it hasn ' t been easy) and have finally reached a pinacle in our lives - GRADUATION. Suddenly, the doubt sets in. Is the fun and games really over? Is working every day for the rest of my life all I have to look for- ward to? Have these past 4 years been the proverbial good old days ? And ultimately. Is there life after DVC? I say Hell yes To me college is a stepping stone, a crutch used to move on to bigger and better things. But, we must remem- ber to set realistic goals. If we do, we will meet them. Only then can we further challenge ourselves. This was by far my toughest and best year at DVC. I feel that I have made many meaningful relationships, and that I have bet- tered myself as a person for serving as your president. I want to thank each of you who helped make this year as memorable as it was, and those of you who supported me when I was ready to throw in the towel. At this time, I feel that we should all stand up and honor our families, parents especially, who have supported us. I would personally like to thank my parents for their help and understanding. Every day I ' ve been here I ' ve learned, not only through classes, but also through my involvement in the community and activities on and off campus. But mostly, I ' ve learned through interactions and experiences with you, my friends. We are, after 4 years, FAMILY. No matter how far we go or what we do, we will always be family as long as we carry each other in our hearts and in our minds. Nothing can take away the memories of our years here at DVC. Nobody can break the lasting bonds of lifelong friendships we ' ve made. Sometimes I cry when I think I won ' t see some of you for as long as 5 years. Some of you I may never see again. But, an old saying always comes to mimd: Abscence makes the heart grow fonder. And I real- ize that my tears aren ' t those of sadness, they are tears of joy from remembering each of you that has touched my life in so many different ways. In conclusion, I have just one thing to say which I feel sums it all up: I LOVE YOU GUYS!!
