There occurs a subtle metamorphosis and suddenly the boy is a man, and the girl a woman. With this change comes the responsibility of de- ciding where our place in life will be. Parents and friends, on whom we de- pended for so long, can ' t make the choice for us. Just as the fragile seedling eventually bursts into full bloom, so we discover our purpose. With the deci- sion comes the first step-the begin- ning-and so we came together here to share a common goal: To live life to it ' s fullest, to learn, and to grow. ¥ We would like to express our gratitude to our parents, who have in a sense planted us here at DVC. In many instances it was their guidance and love which led us to trod these collegiate paths. We will always be grateful to them for the love, sup- port and interest they have given us. For it was our parents who brought us here for our first interview, who helped us move in that first day, who expressed interest in the grades we received, and the summer jobs we got, and sent letters and carepack- ages to us from home. And it was our parents in whose eyes we saw pride for us as we processed on com- mencement day. Zhmks parents for starting us here! To The Underclassmen As graduating seniors we all look liack on our four years of college ilifferently. But we ail started in the s.une position; we ' ve been in your shoes and know how you stand! Del-Val, win a championship in football? Absurd would have been the reply to that statement a few short years ago! But it is true-believe it! The Aggies are the 1980 MAC Northern Football Champions. Shocking all the oddsmakers DVC swept to the title with an unble- mished 7-0 league mark behind a bruising defense that only allowed twenty- one points in its seven league victories. Included in that skein were four shutout wins, one of which was over nationally- ranked Lycoming, the odds-on-favorite to win the title. So much for the odds! In his fifth year as the head coach at Del-Val, Al Wilson has taken a once ailing program and restored it to more than just respectability-he made it a champion. Coach Wilson has indeed, come a long way from that first winless season in 1976. Each successive season the Aggies devel- oped more character and more wins, until finally the banner 1980 year provided the climax. The defense was, of course, devastating, but the offense was no patsy either. Sopho- more Eric Reynolds became the first rushen in the school ' s history to break the 1000-yard mark in a single season. Eric accomplished this by ac- cumulating 254 yards in the title- clinching contest against Albright to finish with a total of 1002. Quarter- back Tom Kenny provided the strong arm for the Aggies ' aerial at- tack. Yes, DVC finally can boast of its first football championship. Where does Coach Wilson go from here? So when Del-Val captured the Northeast Divi- sion Field Hockey Championship, she wasn ' t really surprised. But, playing heavily-favored Franklin and Marshall for the MAC Title was go- ing to be a mammoth task. Despite the fact the girls lost 3-1 Coach Vellner was still pleasantly surprised at the team effort that almost earned them the win. DVC fielded an experienced squad with fine senior starters and emerged with the finest effort in all of Coach Vellner ' s seven years of coaching. The teams strong point was its offense and superior ball con- trol, but actually dominated oppo- nents in all aspects of the game. An- nette White brought the squad fur- ther reknown with her selection to the All-Conference Team. Although Coach Vellner will have a huge re- building job on her hands in 1981 she can at least savor the taste of this year ' s Championship for awhile. £adies tie M A CJs, men place tenth vm If Row 1: John Lucas, Lauren Clawson, Richard Weidman, Sue Wagner, James Parson, Chip Cowher, Jeanne Cranney, Carl Pellington, Gail Keleher, Richard Weaver. Lady Runners Show Their Stuff! 1980 marked the first time in the school ' s history that a sepa- rate team was allotted for wom- en in Cross Country. The girls were always allowed to run in practice with their male coun- terparts, but they never really had a chance to test themselves against other female teams. There wasn ' t even enough time to schedule dual meets; only the MAC Championship Meet. The girls knew this was their one opportunity and they responded phenomenally by tying for the Championship with Juniata. Not bad for their first official season. And, if you think the Lady Aggies were good this season, just wait until 1981. You see, the squad con- tained no seniors, thus, the fu- ture appears quite promising. Aggie Runners Outdistance the Competition It is amazing how DVC consistently produces outstanding Cross Country teams year after year. This season ' s edi- tion was no exception as the squad ended with a fine 9-3-1 overall record, and a tenth place finish in the MAC Championships. The teams success was greatly due to the heroics of |im Parsons, the squad ' s MVP. He captured first place in all but two of Del-Val ' s dual meets and a fifth place finish in the league Champion- ship meet Chip Cowhwr also ran quite strong and to show how much he meant to the team, all of DVC ' s losses were suffered while Chip was sick. But, when you speak of DVC ' s suc- cess in Cross Country you can ' t delete Doc Berthold, the man behind the scones, who made Del-Val the power it is in the sport today. Congratulations Doc on another outstanding season! i ; ' ... With all expectations being very high, with last year ' s re- cord of 6-7, Coach Soder felt they would end up on the winning side of the ledger, but came away with a 2- 11-0 record. The Middle Atlantic Conference is one of the strongest Soccer Confer- ences in the east. With powers such as Scranton, Elizabethtown, Drew, and F. D. U. Madison, Coach Soder felt early in the season that they might win some games this year, but it didn ' t come off. There will be an excellent group of seniors returning next year so ex- pectations will be high again. Coach Soder is pleased with the talent he has to work with and is looking for- ward to the beginning of a winning soccer program at Delaware Valley College. Photographers miss volleyball team- oops! The volleyball team of Del-Vai put in another great effort this year as they bettered their last year ' s record by one game. The team is newly formed, beginning its competition in 1979. The girls worked especially hard this year at teamwork- a key principle to a winning team, espe- cially in a sport such as volleyball. Team captains were senior Holly Funk and junior Gail Garthwaite. The most valuable player in her first sea- son was Patti Rissinger. Other letter winners included Michele Forry, Jan Nystrand, Wanda Perugini and Missy Young. This years graduating seniors are FHolly Funk and jan Nystrand. Since the team this year had only two seniors it included many under- classmen who with much effort should be able to make a winning season of the 1982 year. Good luck girls. Coach Vellner knew she would need to find a replacement for Joyce Newswanger in the 1980-81 season in order for her team to excel as it had in 1979-80. But how do you to- tally replace an experienced all-con- ference piaymaker? Well, Susan Hartung rose to the occasion but not really soon enough to produce a winning season for the squad which ended at 5-13. But Coach Vellner has high hopes for this sophomore who never gave less than 100%. After all, how many sophomores win the MVP award for the whole team? Brenda Wolfe, sen- ior, and Patti Rissinger turned in ex- cellent seasons once again while Marcia Werner improved herself considerably over last season. As for Coach Peggy, she ' s put the record of this year behind her and looks ahead to next season, one that holds a lot of promise! ti mi £L t M n  li ' Women ' s Basketball (5-15) 69 Holy Family 57 61 Wilkes 67 61 Western Maryland 45 71 Drew 52 62 Messiah 83 78 Ailentown 68 35 Franklin Marshall 62 46 Lycoming 75 50 Albright 72 58 Cedar Crest 39 30 Scranton 97 50 Muhlenburg 51 69 Moravian 74 51 Penn State-Ogantz 60 53 King ' s 68 46 Ursinus 84 39 Widener 79 75 Upsala 87 Head Coach Peggy Velli ner wl: M fi ' s basketball Basketball team contraets the plaguef It seems that the bad luck that once plagued the Del-Val Football program has now found a new vic- tim-the basketball team. The Aggies mired through a long, 4-20 season that may appear to have been worse than what the final record indicates. Eleven times DVC lost by ten points or less, and almost pulled off a huge upset over the divisional champs of Albright. Yet almost doesn ' t count! The squad was led by seniors Bill Walters and Tom Kehoe in most of the overall statistics and were the real spearhead of the team. Bill led all of his teammates in scoring with 413 total points and 17.2 points per game average while pulling down most of the rebounds. Tom finished second in scoring on the team and led in free throw accuracy 75%. The underclassmen also performed well down the stretch and are to be com- mended. Next season brings upon coach Les Lombardi the difficult task of replac- ing Waiters and Kehoe, but he has a solid nucleus of returning talent which may transform the 1981-1982 season into a winning one. fe.- Men ' s Basketball (4-20) 81 Swarthmore 92 86 Wilkes 92 63 Elizabethtown 71 75 Kings 79 77 Fairleigh-Dickinson 71 60 Drew (o.T.) 63 73 Muhlenberg 94 65 Allentown 73 74 Ursinus 97 84 Albright (30. WRESTLERS PIN FOURTEEN WINS ONTO DEL-VAL REPUTATION Wrestling consistently displays the most impressive showing year after year of any Del-Val athletic team. The 1980-81 squad again made an outstanding showing and produced the finest record in DVC history, plus a second place showing in the league championships. The record number of wins becomes even more impressive when you notice such schools on the schedule as LaSalle, Delaware State and Wilkes. Coach Robert Marshall has built a small school wrestling dynasty here at Del-Val which was spearheaded this year by undefeated Jeff Bar- tholomew and Warren Robertson, both seniors who won their respec- tive MAC weight championships. Joining these two champions were Paul Pearson who also won his re- spective class along with Troy Mar- shall and Tony Novak who turned in second-place finishes. Despite these fine performances Del-Val still fell short of the title by eight points to Lycoming, a team DVC defeated during the regular season. Although our Aggies did fall short they should still be commended on a fine season ' s record that speaks for itself. Golfers Do Well Despite Adversity Ned Linta was just a bit disappoint- ed with the final record of 8-6 that his golf team chalked-up for 1981. Not to say he was dissatisfied with his players, but he was discouraged in the fact that the team had very little practice because of bad weather and the early season the team was forced to play during. But still, all in all, his squad did just fine. The team had a winning record and placed thirteenth out of a field of twenty-one competing schools at the MAC championships, junior Jim Waniak was a medal winner and placed in the top ten at the tourna- ment. In fact, most of the squad con- sisted of juniors, which makes the future prospect for a winner next year seem bright. Mark finished second overall at the meet and set two new MAC records in winning both the 100 high hurdles and 400 intermedi- ate hurdles. Warren aided the Aggies by winning the javelin competition while Steve Trostle took first place in the discus throw. Overall, it was another banner year for DVC in the sport of track and field. The 1981 DVC Baseball team over- came their misfortunes of the pre- vious season to post a fine 11-6-1 overall record. Injuries had plagued the Aggies during 1980 and they finished well below expectations. But head coach Frank Wolfgang couldn ' t help but be pleased over his team ' s performance this year. Leading the way was Darryl Fleiges, a junior second baseman who averaged .336 with 8 homeruns and 21 runs batted in. Darryl re- ceived the squad ' s MVP award and was also selected to the MAC All- Star Team. Lenny Conrad, a junior righthander, was selected as the most valuable pitcher for the team. He posted a 4-2 record with a 3.08 earned run average. Girls ' Softball, the new kid on the block as far as DVC sports are con- cerned, steadily improves year after year and this season was no excep- tion. The Lady Aggies, under first-year coach Karen Marzulli, completed a commendable 6-6 season against a really tough array of opponents, which included league champion Scranton and always-tough Wilkes. The team was catapulted by junior catcher Irene Costa, who batted a fine .385 with 17 hits in 44 at-bats. Backing-up Irene was Marcia Werner at a crisp .353 and Donna Cassano checking in at .346. But bat- ting wasn ' t the only strongpoint of the squad because the defense was also superb. So, for 1982, Coach Marzulli has to be waiting in anticipation because the outlook appears good. The Floral Society offers a wide array of activities for the students who have an interest in floriculture, either as a hobby or career. A large part of the club activi- ties are the various workshops held throughout the year. Floral design work- shops are held on many holiday occasions. Other club workshops broaden the scope of the organization beyond flowers. Pumpkin painting, terrarium and dish gar- dens, topiary. Homecoming floats and A- Day exhibit workshops are examples of the Floral Society ' s diversity of activities. A variety of guest speakers, movies, demon- strations and short field trips allow mem- bers to closely follow current trends and generally expand their exposure to ail phases of floriculture. A-Day is perhaps the Floral Society ' s biggest activity. In ad- dition to some form of floral presentation, the Society is responsible for the A-Day Flower Show, which is one of the high- lights of A-Day. This year ' s version placed special emphasis on the late Dr. James Work, the actual founder and long- time president and chancellor of Del-Val for over thirty years. Dr. Work built the original National Farm School for boys into an under- graduate institution for higher learn- ing in agriculture and science. We owe all of it to Dr. Work. Thus, Founders ' Day may be noth- ing more than an afternoon away from classes, but to others it ' s a spe- cial time to reflect and give thanks to those responsible for DVC. The usual events such as the pie-eating con- test, the milking contest plus animal judging and the various exhibits all proved to be entertaining and en- joyable.
