As you will have occasion to open it. say in the 21st century (pray that you all do), it will take you nostalgically back to your formative years at this college. Then you will be able to fully appreciate the time invested in your college education and to realize the many dividends it yielded. Chief among these will be the satisfaction that comes with intellectual accom- plishment. Now that you learned the basic principles of the educative process, continue to educate yourselves, so that you will not be in the position of an early president of the United States who declined an honorary degree because he felt that No man should, in my judgment, accept a degree he cannot read. I wish for you all a cornucopia โ an abundanc e of happiness and success. ' โ i ' S M i JOHN SILAN DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Coach John Silan Reason and calm judgment, the qualities specially belonging to a leader. Tacitus A MESSAGE TO THE ATHLETES OF THE 1974 GRADUATING CLASS Graduation is always a personal, memorable and highly significant event in your life and it testifies that you have completed the basic educational foundation and hopefully experi- enced a great deal of enrichment from your participation in athletics. Day by day you have honed your athletic skills through keen competition in practice and have been bestowed with the fundamental tools of life in the academic field to prepare you for a better social, economical future. Through athletics you may travel the road of life with more confidence and with high but realistic goals. Please remember that the opportunity for success will be enhanced if you apply your education and your commitment to excellence in athletics. Never in the nation ' s history has there been a greater need for individual strength, indi- vidual pride and wherewithal to stand up and be counted. Athletes develop a sense of loy- alty, dedication and dependability. Athletics serves as a vehicle for better things โ physi- cal development, mental alertness, spiritual enrichment, sacrificing for others, control of oneself in times of stress, training oneself to be humble in victory and resilient in defeat. No one can do more than their best nor should no one expect less . We regret losing some fine young men that have added to the laurels of the Aggies and provided thrills for the Aggie followers. To these fine young student -athletes, we wish every success in every endeavor. Sport ingly yours, John Silan Director of Athletics 1st ROW L TO R: Brian Kahn โ Assistant Manager, Keith Alderfer. In the year 1973, the Aggies compiled a record of 4 winsโ 3 losses and 1 tie. The wins were over Albright, Lycoming, Upsala, and Susquehanna. The Aggies had a great season and were contenders for the MAC title. Through out the season, the team members fought hard and had the spirit that was needed to win. Although there are seniors graduat- ing this year, which will be missed, there is a great under- classmen line up for the upcoming seasons . The 1973 Cross Country Team, coached by Robert Doc Berthold, complet- ed what must be considered one of its best overall seasons on record. The team had 9 wins against 2 losses, and its second place finish in the MAC championships was the best the team has ever done. The team was captained by senior Don Murphy, who inspite of various inju- ries still managed to finish third in scoring for the team. Don was voted the Most Valuable Harrier Award by his teammates in light of his leadership and performance over his four varsity years . There were also three other seniors who competed on the cross country team during their four collegiate years. Bruce Pratt was the second member of the team to finish in the championship race, and he received his fourth varsity letter in cross country. The other seniors were Dave Sverduk and Rich Os- man who received their senior awards. This year ' s team was led by freshman Dennis Hossler and his brother Barry (class ' 75). In his first year of collegiate competition, Dennis won every dual meet he ran, though an injury received during the championship race ham- pered his expected strong showing in that race. Barry was second highest scorer on the team, and he was the first Aggie across the finish line in the championships finishing 13th. Others who played key rolls in the 1973 season were Frank Dengg, ' 77; Tim Manning. ' 75; and Dave Stull, ' 77. The outlook for the 1974 season is mixed. The loss of four graduating seniors could be critical, but with the return of a strong nucleus of underclassmen including the Junior Varsity members who were the second college division team to finish in their respective championship race, 1974 will hopefully be another successful year for Aggie Cross Country . Bartlebaugh, Coach Hardy. Coach Stephenson. The Aggies had a very successful season this year, under the direction of Mark Stephenson. They compiled a 10-2 record, having lost only to their rivals Wilkes and Lycoming. The Aggies took 5th out of 16 teams in the MAC ' S and tied for 12th out of 60 teams at the Nationals. At the MAC ' s, three of the varsity team members won recognition. They were Fran Campbell (167), second; Doug Cope (177), third; and All Bartlebaugh (un- limited), second. Getting three men in the finals is a great accomplish- ment, but we can not help to feel that having the remainder of the team place would have given DVC more prestige during the 73-74 season. Next year we should be able to schieve this goal with the entire team except Joe Thonus and Al Vorhauer returning. Congratulations Fran, Doug and Al, and best wishes are extended to Joe and Al who will be missed next year. From the few of you whom I have come to know well 1 have learned much about myself. Thank you for letting me be your class advisor during your last year as students here. Sincerely, J i yy VA NORMAN FINNANCE This book has been a successful, cumulative effort of many people. We, as the Co-Editors, would like to thank Glenn Fahnestock, the Daily Intelligencer, and Robert McClelland for their aid in photography; John Gaskill for his help in obtaining advertis- ments; Dianne Rodgers and Lisa Harvey for their invaluable drawings; Mrs. Galitz for her many typing assignments; and to our patient advisor, Robert Sauer, who was always ready to lis- ten to our complaints and ideas, and for his help in many aspects. But especially to a great staff with whom it was educational, fun, and rewarding to work with, we say thanks for your pa- tience with us and compatability among all of us. People pass through different eras of life โ ours included a deluge of experiences, which have made our time worthwhile. In our stay, friends have been met and left, their impressions deep- ly felt.
