Sauer BUSINESS MGR. Thomas R. Hawk ADVISOR Harold E. Snvder We Dedicate . . . this yearbook to Ned A. Linta. Our association with you in these last four years has taught us a manifold lesson. This lesson is not academic in nature. It is, however, both practical and philosophical. Yours is a lesson by which we discover a spirit of life and selfless dedication to an ideal and to those associated with that ideal. For many of us these four years will terminate our formal education. However, the lesson which you have given us shall continue to be that assuring force by which we will attain the goals toward which we strive. NED A. LINTA Director of Athletics a • I « A I DELAWARE VALLEY COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND AGRICULTURE DOYLESTOWN. PENNSYLVANIA JAMES WORK PRESIDENT To the Members of the Class of 1965 During your years at the College, you have seen many im- provements in our facilities, a great expansion in our physical plant, and a broadening and strengthening of our academic pro- gram. You have been with us during our most critical period — the period of our evaluation by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. You have shared with us our great joy on the occasion of our accreditation by this authority. You have in fact been a part of what will go down on the records as the greatest growth period in the history of the College, both academically and physically. I am sure that this wonderful experience has imbued within you an intense feeling of accomplishment, and will inspire you to continue to support your Alma Mater and to dedicate your- selves to the numberless things which you may do for the benefit of those who follow you. I can say without any hesitation or equivocation that the future of the College rests with its graduates. May you go through life in peace, in happiness and in dignity. Sincerely, Morris H. CROSS COUNTRY This vear s Cross-Country Team faced stiff competi- tion. With much spirit and zeal, the harriers ended up -with a 10-2 record. Two high lights of the season were: winning the second annual Delaware Valley Conference, and placing 18th in the National Collegiate Athletic Association College Cross- Countrv Championship at Chicago. Illinois. The Cross-Countrv Team displayed strength and spirit throughout the season. 90 LOU COPPENS Lou Coppens led the team as captain in high fashion giving them a goal to strive for. He accumulated 43 firsts, 3 seconds, and 1 third in 47 meets. He also broke the Delaware Valley course record six times in his four years on the team. He set records at Glassboro, Millersville, Susquehanna, Lebanon Valley, Washington College, Eastern Baptist, and Lincoln University. Lou was the Delaware Valley Conference Champion for the past two years. The team proving itself in the East, received the chance to par- ticipate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association championship In the college division Lou placed 10th in a field of 170 runners competing on the four mile course. This resulted in an invitation to compete in the NCAA University Division at East Lansin Michigan. On a windy, cold, snowy day at Michigan State University, Lou finished 41st out of 180 runners in the University Division and first in the College Division. This singles hm out as one of the top cross country runners in the country. JIM MURPHY Jim was a very important asset to the cross-country team His collegiate record consisted of 5 firsts, 19 seconds, and 5 thirds for 34 meets. As the team ' s number two runner, he consistently broke through packs oi opposing runners to cross the finish line in record time His competitive spirit inspired his fellow runners to their record break- ing season. Willi the acK.ni of a new Varsity Basketball coach, Mr. Allan Hartley, the Ag- gies turned in their most impressive record since 1951. Tin ' team was led by captain George Tiefenthaler, assisted 1 senior Dick Baughn. This combination was augmented by six promising freshmen. Willi more experience, the team should lie able to ln ld their own against stiff competition. SCHEDULE DATE COLLEGE DATE COLLEGE 12 1 Phila. Thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears Turn back fellows the mail is not out yet! Wordsworth Class It was cold, rainy and dismal. Hardly the type of day conducive to the pleasant commencement of our careers at Delaware Valley College. If we thought this day was any indication of what the next four years would hold in store, most of us. surelv. would have turned around and gone home. But being naive, and inexperienced in the ways of the academic world we stood faithfully in lines which led us to the registration desk where we were engulfed in a sea of registration cards. We were officially signed in — we had passed our Fail-Safe. As if this was not enough in one day we were beset by a myriad of pre-semester examinations. Before we. were given a break, classes started and with classes also began the freshman nemesis, customs. If nothing else, our period of customs was creative. We can list to our credits two bonfires and Lake Archer. Both of which were I literally I built by hand. Naturally being the class of 1965 we set out early to establish high standards and break records. We began by erecting a larger and more massive bonfire than any which preceeded. In the course of events, we proud freshmen found it necessary to protect our beautiful mountain of wood. None of us will ever forget the sound of Hoagy ' s bugle summoning us to protect our bonfire. Events, both frustrating and comical, broke the dull routine of chemistry, zoology and Freshman composition : Paul Kessler and his used cars, the Holocaust at Farm Four, the cook out behind Elson Hall, and the panty raid. Somehow that ill-fated episode did not turn out quite as planned. Our Holland Holiday was a beautiful success. The many hours of planning and work proved to be very worthwhile. Surprisingly, the windmill worked w ll all night. Perhaps the most unsuccessful of our freshman ven- tures came in the form of our infamous riot. Days of plan- ning and hours of anxious preparation culminated in a brilliant display of courage, determination and chaos — that lasted for all of three and a half glorious minutes. At times things got rough, frustration and tension mounted, but no matter how black the situation appeared, when our marks were failing and our hearts down trodden and only two weeks before finals, we could always thank Josh for saying, don ' t worry there is still ample time. ' The freshman year terminated with Summer Prac- ticum. Here we were exposed to all forms of practical ex- perience. At any time during the month of June in 1062 one could expect to see l_ ILman Hall floating down Alumni Lane on a river of foam to the clink of ten thousand dead soldiers . History During that summer of 1%2 the College was given Accreditation and accepted as a member by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. This was not only a milestone in the history of the College but also a great tribute to the efforts of the administration and staff who made it possible. The fall of 1962 found us back on campus after a summer vacation which we all felt ended too soon. As sopho- mo ' res we immediately plunged ourselves into the hardy exercising of our newly acquired power over the freshmen as the administrators of customs. With a hearty Button Frosh we led •our freshmen through a tumultuous period which ended in the revival of the tug of war. It was about this time that we were exposed to Mr. Schmieden It didn ' t take very long for us to realize how- little we new about everything. The first concert to be held at Delaware Valley Col- lege was ours. It was our concept, and our achievement. Maynard Ferguson and his Orchestra put on a spectacular jazz concert. It must be stated that we gained a lot more from this concert than financial success; we learned or- ganization, responsibility, and the meaning of the word panic. (Thank vou Mr. Steinberg.! This venture proved to be such a phenomenal success that it has become a tra- dition carried out annually by the members of the sopho- more class. We went into our second A-Day with more knowledge and experience than we had the previous year, and our class made an excellent showing in all fields. Of course no discussion of our sophomore year would be complete without mentioning the big 65 that was painted on the water tower. Eh. Kav? In our junior year we seemed to be more settled down. There was more emphasis on study and less on gipping. Many of us became more involved in the various clubs and activities on campus. The Yearbook and Prom Committees w ere organized in the anticipation of our forthcoming senior year. The year, however, was not with- out its lighter moments: any number of insanities could be expected at anv moment. During the January snow storms the second floors of Cooke and Barness Halls were the scene of mass practice of such summer sports as swim- ming and diving, and the snowball fight between the jun- iors and freshmen left one of our warriors limping for several davs. The administration passed a law prohibiting the use of exotic wallpaper and once again some of us were left facing bare walls. Of course, there were some planned activities too, our Roaring Twenties dance, one of the more unusual of our endeavors, and the Hootenanny pro- vided the social highlights of the year. We moved into Work Hall. Unfortunately, the building was not yet in a state of total readiness; the magnificent new structure seemed infallible until seven forty-five on that morning of the first class of the school year. Our senior year saw the answer to many of our prayers arrive in too few numbers. Preparation for the Yearbook and Prom were well under way by the beginning of the semester and the stu- dents eagerly awaited the coming of the caterer. Most of our time was spent in serious study and in the contempla- tion of our future endeavors. By May most of us were in- fected with the senior jitters. As we approach graduation let us look to our left and to our right as we realize the truths which were set before us four years ago. Though nothing can bring back the hour Of splendor in the grass, of glory in the flower: We will grieve not, rather find Strength in what remains behind; — Wordsworth 153 1965 Cornucopia Staff Co-editors Peter Gerity and Robert Sauer While writing this message we were filled with feelings of regret and anticipa- tion. We cannot help but feel regret at the soon-to-come separation of well established friendships. Now-, we look to the future ivith some anxiety, but arc filled ivith confidence instilled in us over the past four years. It would not be appropriate for us to leave without expressing our deepest grati- tude to the entire staff of the 1965 Cornu- copia and to all who aided us in the pre- sentation of this book. I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by having the state look after me. I warn to take the calculated risk: to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed. I refuse to barter incentive for a dole. I prefer the challenges of hje to the guaranteed existence; the thrill of fulfillment to the stale calm of Utopia. I will not trade freedom for beneficence nor my dignity for a handout. I will never cower before any master nor bend to any threat.
