H. WI LEMAN—Superintendent ANN VAUGHN- Secretory SCHOOL BOARD Mr. Ralph Ackerman. President Mr. Merrill Erickson Mrs. Robert Betzer Mr. Rudolph Lange Mr. Edgar Sikes Some unknown person, no doubt someone with graying holr, once soid, Youth ii tveh o wonderful time of life! Too bod thot it i wotted on young people. The implication of thot anonymous and noitolgic wH it that the opportunities of youth are to great that the witdom of age is necetsory to take full odvontoge of them. As it is impossible for young people to have the wisdom of age, the youthful yeort are, therefore, wasted in purposeless activities. Anyhow fhot appears to be the reasoning of that older person, who really wos just yearning to be young agoin. I presume that it could be said thot the school exists because of society's attempt to bring wisdom into thit wonderful time of life. Yet youth often falls to see it that way. With some justification young people may feel thot school is just a complicated restriction of their liberties and opportunities under the excuse of learning a lot of truthful but quite unimportant information. There is a constant conflict between the old and the young usually over the subject of whot is good for the young. The old ore inclined to prescribe for youth a formula of orderliness and disciplined conduct os the most satisfactory method of achieving security and hoppiness. Youth oppears to believe thot free expression of mind ond body unrestricted by the artificial responsibilities of society will produce a completely satisfying happiness and the conflict it never completely resolved except by the pasting of time ond young people become old people ond—for the most port—adopt the same ottitudes towards youth that their elders possessed. It hos been my duty ond pleasure to observe Delovon High School students in their mony curricular and co-curricular activities. They hove o light manner under which they hide their serous concern for the important things in school life. They hove o serious and thorough woy in which they go about the lighter things of their existence. The impression speaks well for the Delavan of the future. I hope and believe that Delavan young people are realising the full possibilities of their youth. If, when these young people ore old, they fail to find anything more than o wisp of humor in the statement Youth is such a wonderful time—loo bad that it it wosted on young people. then they moy know thot their own youth wos both wonderful and unwosted. -4- Standing: F McClellan, B Swender. 0. The Council instituted the popular Color Day—the day on which the students wore blue and gold to show school spirit. The well-received Comet Booster Button was also a Student Council project. At a district meeting in Williams Bay, delegates discussed school problems with other Councils. Remember May 3? Under Council guidance the student body took over the teaching at D.H.S. It was good experience and loads of fun. B. Dickmon. J. Boutell . C. Stev.n , Mr. Kleyemteuber. Today marks the dedication of the new Dolavan High School. This Building is the product of the continuous efforts and inspiration of the class of '54 who has left its mark upon the minds of many. By the way. this is your on-the-spot reporter, Carol Stevens, relating the events of this day of days. Carol: As we come to our spacious auditorium, we find Superintendent Walter Pawly introducing the guest speaker. Scogge Doyle, senator from Wisconsin. Senator Doyle recently investigated the Schmaling-Quinney monopoly on farming in Wisconsin. What s this? A telegram has just been delivered. It's President Boutelle sending his regrets. He's in Washington—playing golf with Ex-President Eisenhower. The class of '54 is well represented today. Elfrieda Vriezen is busy untangling her five children from Donna Stevens throe. I wonder what it would be like if Elfrieda had brought her other seven along? I just caught sight of Shirley Milton. You remember, Shirley married Diamond Joe Jones. What's this Shirley is saying? Shirley: Too bad more of the old gang couldn't make the reunion. Fritz. I hear Kit Kenney was just promoted to major in the Marines, and Bob Bruce, the jet ace. is whirling around setting another world's record. Fritz: Oh? I just saw David Hume's new Colorvision picture starring Hopalong Gordon. Terry McCray is the art director and Barb Murphy is costumes mistress. This new picture is bound to win an Oscar . Shirley: Did you know Johnny Peters has four little boys? One's name is Toni. Carol: Let's browse through the building. At the top of the escalator and to your right is the English Department. Mr. Zoeller's successor. Richard Kozak, has recently written a book. How to Skip School Successfully. The new English textbook this year is I Go Pogo. written and edited by the renowned author. Ronnie Gough. Behind the smoke you see curling out of that room at the end of the corridor is Carol Morrison, the head of our Physics Department. Shirley: Oh say. did you hear that Ken Knack is now head of the Borg Corporation? They manufacture the clocks that Frank Jonuska and Jack Freund use in their 1979 Ponties. Fritz: This must be the nurse's room. I hear that Diana Eaton is a huge success as a nurse—she gives everyone an aspirin. Carol: Do you see that cubby hole at the far left? That's Barb Steff's office. She did such a bang up job in 1954 that she was hired as permanent editor of the Comet. Shirley: I hear EJaine Schwardt is making a hit as the new school bus driver. Fritz: Our classmates have certainly accomplished things. Janice Kroll, Joy Kovarik. and Shirley Beyritz are the sensational dancing trio. Shirley: Yes. and the Red Devils have a rival now—Bob Dickman's football team. It's won the state championship ten years in a row. (J. Edward Cantwell, head of the F.B.I., will have to look into this.) Stan Sutton is another D.H.S. athlete who made good. He's playing tackle for the Los Angeles Rams. Fritz: What ever happened to Ron Smith? - 18- Shirley: Oh. his jazz bond is still burning it up at the 'Blue Note' in Chicago. You know. Pete’s still drumming with him. Fritz: Did you hear that Katie is making her debut at the Mot next month? The critics ore singing her praises as they are Jerry Eaton's. who's starring for his 103rd week on Broadway. Donna Wendorf. a new M.G.M. discovery, has topped Audrey Hepburn's box office rating. Carol: This gloaming room of stainless steel is our new cafeteria manned by the chefs. Jeon Dorsey and Ginger Moser, with Jean Soplanda as the chief food inspector. An automatic ticket taker, troy discharger, and feeder hove given the girls a real boost. Shirley: Speaking of edibles, Plewe’s has a rival in Dick Flahive and Gay Honse. They are well-known for their speciality -the Flahive-Honseburgers . Carol: Turning to the fashion world. Paris has claimed our designer. Ruth Anne. I hear Morgy Schaab is the model most in demand. Fritz: Have you seen the new version of the Ziegfeld Follies produced by Buddy Fenn and Wally Gisske? It's said to have the longest chorus line in the business, starring Pot Jackson. Joan Stevens, and Dodie Parsons. And speaking of entertainment. I hear Dick Mosiman is devastating in his Scotch act. Those kilts! Shirley: What about the rest of the kids? Fritz: Well, Cliff Verrill owns Murphy and O'Neill's now: and Tom Murphy is manufacturing a new light, plastic bassoon. It's much easier to carry. Shirley: Let's peek in at the recreation room which is under the direction of Evie Schurman. They hove a new T.V. set donoted by P.T.A. president. Barb Bahr. Under the direction of Mr. Joseph Zoeller the club enjoyed a very successful year. Heading the club this year were Carol Stevens, president; Ann Milligan, vice-president; and Jack Porter, secretary-treasurer. During the fall season, the members scurried about memorizing lines, building sets, collecting properties and costumes, and rehearsing for the three one-act plays which were presented in December. Forensics was next on the agenda. Winners of the local contest, hold on March third, were Gail Stevens, Pat Scholle, Nancy Kuester, Katie Kelsey, serious declamations; Loretta Phillips, Marilyn Utter, Jim Salem, Eugene Westerberg, humorous declamations; Pat Kenney, Ed Swets, Frank Warmey, Ron Jacobson, four-minute speaking; Ann Milligan, Donna Schiller, Bill Haack, Neil Hammerstrom, non-original oratory; Barbara Steffanus. original oratory; Cathy McKibben, Bob Mannaberg, Jack Porter, extemporaneous reading; Carol Stevens, Elfrieda Vriezen, Dave Sincere, extemporaneous speaking. Victors at the league contest in Wilmot were Gail Stevens. Nancy Kuester, Katie Kelsey, Loretta Phillips. Jim Salem, Eugene Westerberg, Frank Warmey, Ann Milligan. Donna Schiller, Bill Haack, Barbara Steffanus, Cathy McKibben, and Jack Porter. The next hurdle—the regional contest at Fort Atkinson—was cleared with top honors by Gail Stevens, Jim Salem. Eugene Westerberg, Frank Warmey, and Jack Porter. These students advanced to the state contest at Madison, where Gail Stevens received an A rating. -33- ree O, ne -_Act PicI 3 THE HAPPY JOURNEY Thu Happy Journey is a charming ploy depicting the events encountered as the Kirbys moke on automobile trip from Newark to Comdon, New Jersey to visit relatives. On Friday, October ninth, alums and students crowded Walworth Avenue to watch the parade of floats—the traditional opener for the Homecoming festivities. The Sophomores won first place with their clever argyle sock and slogan, Ar'guy'les Will Win. The Choir took second, and the Eighth Grade third place. The snake-dance was led by the Junior Band through the town and down to the bonfire where the pep rally was held. In the evening, fans cheered the Comets on to a 33-6 victory over East Troy. Many a girl looked quite professional on the baseball field. Maybe it was badminton that kept the girls hopping, or bowling every Tuesday, or perhaps a tumbling session. There was basketball and volleyball. Jody O’Brien's team copped the championship in the spirited basketball tournament, and the victorious volleyball team was captained by Marilyn Utter. As a money project the girls sold those very popular blue and gold coin purses.
