Ann Vaughn- Secretary School SBoard Mr. Ralph Ackerman—President Mr. Merrill Erickson Mrs. Robert Betzer Mr. Rudolph Lange Mr. Edgar Sikes C. M. WIIEMAN-Superintendent At the time this is being written, Delavan High School representatives had just won the second of two athletic championships both of which are properly extolled elsewhere in this fine chronicle of school affairs, The 1953 Comet. Naturally everyone olse connected with the school is proud of these accomplishments of team members and coaches. Even those of us who had little to do with the success of these teams possess an excusable desire to share in their triumphs. We speak of ‘ our teams and identify ourselves with the victors by announcing we won , or we are the champions It is a revealing commentary on the generous nature of the team members to state that they never object to the way in which we include ourselves with their success. Pleasant as are these competitive victors in our school experiences, they are at best only symbols of other less spectacular victories in a more significant competition faced by all of us. I refer to the eternal competition each person faces with a rather implacable opponent, himself. Each of us, as he participates in educational experience better to equip himself for living, finds that his desire to achieve competence is hindered by his desire to find a short cut to success. Each of us must constantly fight that part of himself that says, Why work, why hurry, why think? Look around, there are so many who appear to thrive without working very hard, or hurrying very much or thinking at all! The man or woman who is content with the cheap victory of mediocre achievement loses something difficult to regain, his self respect. The student who fails to stimulate himself to the kind of achievement of which he is capable will find it hard to please the critical person he must live with all his life. Obviously that person is himself. -3-
