In conference play Delavan tied for third place with Elkhorn. each having won eight and lost six. The SWANI league was a jumbled affair throughout the year, with Geneva finally grasping the title. The Comets had a fine assortment of material. Hirte and Mueller held down the forward position; York. Beall, and Fleming alternated at guard; and Davis played the pivot spot. At the Beloit Regional Tournament Delavan played in the finals by defeating Whitewater and Elkhorn but bowed to Janesville in the championship game. Delavan should have a powerful squad again next season since only four 1947-48 members will have been graduated.

Even though plagued by many injuries, the Comets came through quite well. The most eventful game of the season, as always, was the Elkhorn game in which, coming from far behind, in the last three minutes Mueller scored twice to put the Comets out in front at the end of the game by a score of 20-18. There were many capable linemen such as Hougen. Runkle, Davis, McClellan. Fleming, Koval. Wada. and Flphive. The greatest show of line strength was in the Geneva game when smaller Comet line out-rushed and out-fought Geneva to hold their powerful running attack to almost nothing. This year the line was handled by Assistant Coach Zimmermann and the backfield—usually composed of Smith. Mueller, Beall, and Pierson—by Coach Schultz. 25
