Ann Keegan Adviser Mrs. Henry The School Board There are many people who do not realize the importance of a school board — they feel that it is a group of people set up merely to see that things run smoothly in our school system. In reality our school board has been instrumental in gaining many improvements for our school and in planning for the new school. For our school they have had the new exit to the gym added and have had the corridor between the two buildings widened; they have established the hot-lunch program and had a kitchen built for this purpose. For the new school they have bought a 74-acre tract of land and are having plans made for the new high school and, ultimately, a grade school on this site. The members of the school board are as follows; Mr. R. A. Miller, president, has been on the school board four years, succeeding Mr. E. B. Arnold who retired. Mr. Miller works at the Thomas B. Gibbs Company in Janesville and takes a very active interest in the Delavan Public Schools. Mr. Gunnard A. Piehl, the clerk, has been an active member for a number of years. The term of service of Mr. Piehl. who has been a building contractor in the community for many years, exceeds that of any other member. Mrs. Dora Lowe, the treasurer, has served several terms on the board which shows her active interest in Delavan Schools. She is principal of the secondary department of the State School for the Deaf. Mr. Walter von Gnechten has been a member of the board of education for about ten years. He has been a life-long resident of Delavan and has for many years been a foreman at the Bradley Plant. Doctor N. F. Crowe, succeeding the late John N. O'Brien, is the latest addition to the school board He has practiced medicine in Delavan many years and has always taken a keen interest in the Public Schools. f SUPERINTENDENT J. F. LUTHER The COMET serves an important objective in the school life of Delavan High School. Through the records and pictures in this book our students are able to relive many of the interesting events of high school days. These pleasant associations and the friendships formed leave memories that should be kept alive. It is this continued interest in school that helps those that are now in high school to carry on some of the fine work that was started by our graduates. In this way our school is not just a structure of brick and mortar but a symbol of ideals lived. MRS. VAUGHN. SCHOOL SECRETARY The Student Council The Student Council is composed of the four officers from each high school class. Meetings were held twice a month, with the president presiding and Mr. Kleyensteuber as the faculty adviser. The Student Council conducted the elections for all high school offices at the beginning of the fall term. They sponsored a contest for new cheer leaders to be selected by the votes of the student body. The Homecoming was another big event, including a snake dance, bonfire, parade, presentation of prizes, and crowning of the Queen. Shirley Josephson, at the Homecoming dance. The Sadie Hawkins dance and a mixer were also provided by the Student Council. Bob Koval was backed by the Council In organizing the boys' bowling teams. We had our first game with Milton on September 18; score. 12 -2. Our favor — natch! Then on September 26 — Harvard 18, D. H. S. 12. Well, we can’t always win. (It says here.) I noticed there was a new taxi service in town. Judging by the number of customers. Alice Pounder and Joann Jacobson must have made millions! October 3 was another lucky night — we beat Marengo. 19-0. So-o-o-o sorry! Tribune, you forget to mention the Red Devils. Can you talk Chinese? No? Well, see Mr. M. Rosholt for instructions. Our luck was still holding, in the last few minutes of play we made two touchdowns: D. H. S. 20 — Elkhom -18. October 10 was the lucky date. Everybody wore raincoats those days — squirt guns, you know. On October 16 we had the snakedance (just to think of it makes my arm hurt) and bonfire. Burned Tribune Tower, remember? Next day we had the homecoming parade. (Nice going. Dramat). That night Shirley Josephson was crowned Queen. A big boo to Whitewater for winning, 34 to 19. (What was the matter boys, paying too much attention to that court?) The dance was on the eighteenth. Twirp season was hard on the girls' budgets. I wonder why the boys had such enormous appetites those days! The Marimba player and family were enjoyed on October 24. (Cute, wasn’t he — the little boy. that is!) Burlington did it to us again, 34 • 0. Happy (?) Halloween. The harpist, Mr. Williams, from the Minneapolis Philharmonic didn't exactly appreciate us (was the feeling mutual?). Even though plagued by many injuries, the Comets came through quite well. The most eventful game of the season, as always, was the Elkhorn game in which, coming from far behind, in the last three minutes Mueller scored twice to put the Comets out in front at the end of the game by a score of 20-18. There were many capable linemen such as Hougen. Runkle, Davis, McClellan. Fleming, Koval. Wada. and Flphive. The greatest show of line strength was in the Geneva game when smaller Comet line out-rushed and out-fought Geneva to hold their powerful running attack to almost nothing. This year the line was handled by Assistant Coach Zimmermann and the backfield—usually composed of Smith. Mueller, Beall, and Pierson—by Coach Schultz. 25 Basketball Second tow: D. Pioraon. The Comets had a fine assortment of material. Hirte and Mueller held down the forward position; York. Beall, and Fleming alternated at guard; and Davis played the pivot spot. At the Beloit Regional Tournament Delavan played in the finals by defeating Whitewater and Elkhorn but bowed to Janesville in the championship game. Well. I started out on Labor Day at the County Fair; and did I have fun! After that I jumped to marching practice and played at all of our home football games and the first Red Devil game. Believe it or not. I even had a short rest between football and basketball seasons, but when basketball season rolled around—well, oh man! The bunch called the ''Hungry 18 took over and I really was busy. But that was over soon, too. In the meantime the members decided to try something new (aren't they always!), and so we elected officers. Next on the agenda came one of the annual concerts, and then back to good hard work; yes, for the Music Festival at Whitewater which was held April 24 for solos and ensembles and May 8 for the concerts and marching. And so that finishes up another year which really wasn't so bad after all. even if I did do a lot of complaining. As a matter of fact, it was fun!! So long. The next public appearance was the Christmas Concert given in the Senior High Auditorium December 17. The Chaminade Chorus, the two sextet groups, and the soloists, Noreen Winkleman and Dick Hougen, were added features of this program. The mass chorus performance was given in Burlington on Monday. March 1. under the direction of Fred Leist of Oshkosh. The following choir members participated, representing Delavan: Sopranos— Noreen Winkleman, Jean O'Brien, Lois Bellman, Jeannette McDonough, and Lois Kasequma; altos—Shirlov Josephson, Judy Schnell, Eileen Spencer. Jean Utter, and Mary Beswick; tenors—Francis Flahive, Fred Draper. John Franklin, Bob McClellan, and Fred Kroll; basses—Robin Sargent, Tom Fleming, Chuck McClellan, and Dick Van Alen. Spirituals, folk songs, holy songs, and American ballads were among those sung. Robin Sargent was the incidental soloist in the American traditional song Erie Canal, for the matinee performance. Probably the most successful concert given by the choir in the past number of years was the Sprinq Concert, held in the Senior High Auditorium Tuesday, March 9. The choir opened the concert with holy songs, dressed in their choral robes. In closinq the concert, the choir wore suits and formals while singing Negro Spirituals and American ballads. The Chaminade Chorus, the Boys' Octet, and soloists Robin Sargent and Noreen Winkleman also sang, and Mary Beswick was the accompanist. Several soloists and ensemble qroups entered the Music Festival on April 24; and on May 8 the A Cappella Choir participated in the Festival at Whitewater. 42 Choir Fourth row: D. Yant. C. Many of the Senior High Dramat members have given short talks and demonstrations on make-up and use of hands, body, and voice. The four main purposes of the club are to learn general speech habits through use of creative dramatics, to familiarize students with the importance of body and voice, to familiarize students of junior high age with various phases of speech in the school program, and finally, to present different plays throughout the year. Soon after taking first place with their float in the Annual Homecoming parade, the members of the organization were busy with their all school production RAMSHACKLE INN. which was put on for a large audience in the auditorium of the Wisconsin School for the Deaf, on Saturday evening, December 6. On February 17, the group sponsored the annual one-act play festival, showing the work of the seniors who were interested in direction. An effort was made to present repeat performances of these plays wherever possible. Another project of the year was the participation in the Centennial Drama festival at the State Teachers College in Whitewater. The last project of the year was the annual trip to Chicago to see one of the showings in the professional theatre. Fifth row: Mr Goo. T. Floming. F. Flahive. J. McClollan. J.Davlt. B. Flood. B. Ramshackle Inn A three-act mystery farce, Ramshackle Inn, was presented at the State School Auditorium on December 6 for a delighted audience. In order to meet more interesting people than she had as a librarian in East Ipswich, Belinda Pryde—with the advice of Commodore Lucius Towser— buys a hotel in the country where the clerk, unknown to the former or the new owners, is part of a liquor racket. At times serious and at other times hilarious, Ramshackle Inn, directed by Mr. Ronald Gee, was a huge success. THE CAST OF CHARACTERS Pa It on .................. Arbuthnot .................
