In retrospect we turn to the many school experiences of the last year. Some we view with pride because of our many noteworthy achievements; other experiences we recall with regret because perhaps we could have done better. It is with genuine pleasure that I look back on the year 1946-47. The student body has done much to make us proud of Dela-van High School. It is through the many cooperative endeavors of students and faculty that the finest traditions of our school have been developed. The graduating seniors we hold in our high esteem. Their splendid contributions are firmly woven into the fabric of our school. Their influences follow you, thus making you a continuing part of D.H.S. Therefore, we cannot say Goodbye. but just Good Luck and Best Wishes to all of you. SUPT. JAMES F. Adviser Charles McCommons Jim Davis . Don Smith Mr. Kleyensteuber This year the Student Council composed of all class officers, again sponsored Homecoming, which was a huge success—even though it had to be postponed because of rain. The activities included o snake dance, bonfire, parade, presentation of prizes, and crowning of the Queen, Ruthie Crowe, at the Homecoming dance. A great amount of work and time was spent on a constitution for the Council. Many urgently needed improvements, as a new voting and nominating system and reorganization of the Council, were included. The Student Council was also responsible for organizing boys’ bowling teams and three mixer dances. Section. ClaM. MARGARET MARY FLEMING Morgee” Clou President Doc Fleming he will be known o . Students from the club performed in the gypsy operetta, Chonita, in November. Their next project was a one-act drama, “Silent Night,' which was presented to the student body before Christmas. On January 1 1 members went to Milwaukee to attend a speech institute, where helpful suggestions were received in all phases of forensics. The one-act play contest for the senior high classes was sponsored by the club in February. All arrangements for the League Forensic Contest held in Delavan March 20 were made by this organization. Forthcoming events for the remaining part of the year include an Easter program and a trip to Chicago to see a professional stage play. JUNIOR HIGH DRAMATIC CLUB 24 4lh low: 6. Smith, 0. Mitchell, D. The Junior High Dramatic Club, under the direction of Mr. Gee and Miss Henricksson, was organized at the beginning of the second semester. The four main purposes of our club are to learn good general speech habits through the use of creative dramatics, to familiarize students with the importance of the body and the voice not only in dramatics but in everyday speech, to familiarize students of junior high school age with the various phases of speech in the school program, and finally, to present a one act play as the moin project of the semester. Try-outs for the club consisted of three short readings, one prepared and two unprepared. From approximately fifty students, thirty-five were chosen as members. Barbara Smith was elected chairman, and Pat Scheurell was appointed to take charge of the roll card. At the first few meetings, members of the Senior High Dramatic Club gave short talks on posture and uses of the hands, body, and voice. With these points in mind, small groups presented pantomimes to the rest of the group. Our main project of the year, the one act play, will be presented in April. FORENSICS Thirty-four students participated in the locol Forensic Contest held March 18. CHONITA Chonito, a gypsy musical, given through the combined efforts of the A Cappella Choir and Dramatic Club, proved to be a great success. This was evident by the attendance, which excelled 1,000. The operetta was under the direction of Miss Dorothy Flitcroft and Mr. Ronald Gee. Mr. Kleyensteubcr directed the orchestra. The entertaining story of the gypsy lovers was presented November 4th and 5th in the State School Auditorium. Interior scenery and costumes were characteristic of the late Eighteenth Century in Hungary. The biggest event was the operetta, Chonito, in which the whole choir participated. The first concert given was at the Christmas assembly for the high school students. On February 17th twenty-two of the choir members took part in the Massed Choir at Lake Geneva. They were: Beverly James, Barbara Horn, Betsy Tschorner, La Verne Dibble, Betty Olson, Barbara Zimmerman, Betty Anderson, Alice Fleming, Marilyn Munger, Judy Schnell, Jean O'Brien, Dick Luther, Dick Honeyager, Rollie McClellan, John Kleven, Dick Haugen, Irwin Horn, Charles McCommons, Francis Rlahive, Gordon Lieurence, Gene Cour, ond Bob McClellan. We were very proud to have our accomponist, Mary Bes-wick, help in accompanying some of the numbers of this concert. Both Mary and Audrey Zilisch deserve a great deal of credit for their faithfulness in accompanying the group throughout the year. The Spring Concert given on March 7th proved to be one of the best concerts performed by the choir. Part of the program was sung by the Chaminade Chorus and the Girls' Sextet. Soloists with the choir during the year have been Barbara Horn, Marilyn Munger, and Dick Honeyager. On March 15th the choir chartered a bus to hear the Lawrence College Choir at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee. The A Cappella choir entered the festivol at Whitewater this year in class A. The choir officers are Charles McCommons, president; Rollie McClellan, vice-president; and Francis Flahive, secretary-treasurer. CHAMINADE CHORUS 5th Row: t. Reed, B. Jomet, A. Zilitch, M. Hummel, M. In August five boys were chosen to play in the All-State Band which performed at the All Star football game. The entire band played at the Walworth County Fair loter in the month. During the football season the band performed beautifully. It is interesting to note that Delavan's band was the only one in this vicinity that marched at every game; Homecoming was no exception. At the October meeting of Ihe P.T.A. the Senior Band gave an interesting and enjoyable concert. A ten piece ensemble ployed for the operetta, Chonita, in November. In January eleven members of the band were chosen to play in the Mass Band, consisting of 1 1 2 people from 1 2 schools nearby. The Delavan High School Band also lead the Memorial Day parade, Homecoming Parade, played at the Armistice Day program and Commencement exercises. Whenever a little music will hit the spot, the band, or portions of it, is called upon. Throughout the entire basketball season the pep band, known as The Hungry 18. enlivened the crowd. They cheered up the losers and kept the winners in the best of spirits. The Junior and Senior Bands gave a spring concert for the public. One of the biggest and most colorful offairs was the festival. On April 26 about 15 students played solos and 40 participated in various ensembles. On May 10 the whole band competed in concert and marching. 4lh Row: Mr. Kleyon feuber. M. Kroll. B. Smith. M. Wiemer. M. Clork. H. Mudgelt, B. Doherty, B. Hodge. J. Kemmet. P. Scheurell, C Wolker. J. Delavan had a powerhouse in every department. The out-field was a hard slugging combination of Murphy, McClellan, and L. Davis. The in-field was a superb aggregation of fielding and hitting consisting of Mueller, Madison, Hopkins, and Sturtevant. The battery was usually Captain Schmoling to J. Davis. The fine pitching of Schmoling contributed greatly to a grand season. Comet lettermen elected the Barnes twins, Ronald and Donald, co-captains of the 1946 Delavan High School football team. Delavan opened its 1946 football season with 4 veterans. The veteran lineman, Pat Murphy, later enlisting in the army, left the team with an inexperienced line. The Comets started football practice with 38 potential candidates. Though the line was hard hit because several of the 1945 veteran players had graduated, the backfield prospects were brighter. A great offensive backfield was an asset to the Comets. The line grew stronger as the season progressed. Hopkins, the Barnes, Mueller, and Beall were the offensive plugs. In the lines were such stalwarts as Knilans, Hauffe, Folts, Flahive, McClellan, and Luther. Third Row: Ait!. Coach A. Gallo. I. Horn. S. Kniloni. 0. Andonon. D. Barnet. R. Beoll, E. Mueller, D. Small but speedy, the Comets were a battling ball club. Delavan started slowly but came roaring back to tie for second place in the S.W.A.N.I. League. Such outstanding scorers os Madison, McClellan, Mueller, and Isoz were a great advantage to the Comets. Captain Hauffe and Jim Davis's offensive and defensive rebounding was the turning point in many games. Hirte, Luther, Hopkins, Honeyoger, and Folts, all great ball players were also a big help. The Comets were dropped from the Regional in the semi-finals by the Beloit State Champions. Delavan won over Whitewater 40-27 and lost to Beloit 58-31. B SQUAD The Comet B team was o sharpshooting and speedy bunch consisting mostly of lost year’s B reserves ond the junior high members. The Bees placed second in the newly organized S.W.A.N.I. League. The junior Comets were among tough competition but missed only by a game from being champs. They won 12 and lost 4. Many of the team’s wins were accomplished by the excellent shooting of York and Beall. Flahive was the master of rebounds in most games. Williamson and Smith, two neat ball handlers, helped in many victories. The regulars were bolstered by superb subs. In fact, there were almost two teams of great ball handlers.
