When the call for football men went out this fall, 7 lettermen of the 44 Comets were among the 45 candidates reporting for practice. Although the Comets were vastly improved over last year, they were faced by powerful veteran teams of the Southern State Conference. Winning two and losing two in league competition, the Comets dropped their non conference title to the powerful Jefferson and Union teams of the Rock Valley League. MILTON 12 DELAVAN 0 The Comets opened their season against a powerful Milton team and held them score less until the last quarter, when a fumble and a blocked punt accounted for the Milton scores. JEFFERSON 27 DELAVAN 7 Jefferson, scoring once in the first and third quarters and twice in the second, defeated the fighting Delavan squad in a rough and tumble game. WHITEWATER 19 DELAVAN 27 In a free scoring rough contest the Comets defeated the Quakers with McClellan scoring all four touchdowns for the Comets. LAKE GENEVA 39 DELAVAN 6 The Comets were defeated in a battle which proved the Resorters of Geneva just too much for them, although they never quit. ELKHORN 6 DELAVAN 7 The battle of the year— Homecoming. No game ever was more exciting than this one. In the 2nd quarter the Comets shook their ace half, August, loose on a brilliant 60 yard jaunt behind perfect blocking. Nobody laid a hand on him. Sturtevant then attacked what proved to be the winning point from placement. Elkhorn took the kickoff and didn't give up the ball until they had scored. Delo-van's line remained firm and the Elks failed to convert. The Comet’s line again started in the last 2 minutes of the game. The Elks had a first down with 7 yards for a touchdown, but the fighting Comets gave up only 6. BURLINGTON 14 DELAVAN 12 The Comets dropped this one after a heartbreaking game when an official called the ball back from the 3 yard line to the 33 in the last minute of play. The big Burlington line charged through and blocked both of Delavan's conversion attempts. At the close of the season there were 20 letter winners on the Comet squad: Seniors— Honorary Captain Gene Murphy, Don Sturte-vont. Bill Guamer, Don August, Charles Schmal-ing, Albert Kitzman, and Lawrence Davis. The other letter winners were Pat Murphy, William Woda, Gordon Madison, Francis Flahive, Rollie McClellan, Don Hopkins, William Eckhardt, Dick Luther, Edgar Mueller, Donald and Ronald Barnes, Gordon Lieurence, Tom Murphy and Student Manager, Dick Dillenbeck. 20

Prospects of the 1945-46 season were questionable because it was impossible to determine just what the outlook was going to be. The nucleus of the squad was made up chiefly of the previous season’s reserves. As the season progressed, the boys showed much improvement and our opponents knew they were in for a busy evening whenever they met the Comets. While we had plenty of speed and good ball handling, the outstanding disadvantage was the lack of height. Captain Madison’s offensive play and scoring led us to many victories. Murphy’s and Hauffe’s defensive work helped the Comets set a satisfactory record. The floor play of forwards August and McClellan also featured. The Comets reserves gave a good account of themselves whenever called upon. Letter winners were G. Madison, G. Murphy, D. August, H. Hauffe, L. Rosencrans, R. Barns, and D. Doherty. Prospects for next season appear to be very bright. With the graduation of two regulars and one reserve, our team should be a title contender in the newly organized league. 22
