Charles Schmaling Leslie Babcock Secretory Adviser Dick Zimmerman Miss Jacobson The members of the Council are officers from each class and special delegates from the social science classes. They have conducted studies on sciool problems throughout the year. Under the very capable leadership of Charles Schmaling, the Student Council had a most active year. They have sponsored three juke box dances, a Christmas dance, a Sadie Hawkins dance, and several free mixers. The Council made Homecoming especially successful with a bonfire, snake dance, free movie, dance, Homecoming Queen and Court. Much time and effort were spent collecting 1,820 cans of food for foreign relief. When the call for football men went out this fall, 7 lettermen of the 44 Comets were among the 45 candidates reporting for practice. Although the Comets were vastly improved over last year, they were faced by powerful veteran teams of the Southern State Conference. Winning two and losing two in league competition, the Comets dropped their non conference title to the powerful Jefferson and Union teams of the Rock Valley League. MILTON 12 DELAVAN 0 The Comets opened their season against a powerful Milton team and held them score less until the last quarter, when a fumble and a blocked punt accounted for the Milton scores. JEFFERSON 27 DELAVAN 7 Jefferson, scoring once in the first and third quarters and twice in the second, defeated the fighting Delavan squad in a rough and tumble game. WHITEWATER 19 DELAVAN 27 In a free scoring rough contest the Comets defeated the Quakers with McClellan scoring all four touchdowns for the Comets. LAKE GENEVA 39 DELAVAN 6 The Comets were defeated in a battle which proved the Resorters of Geneva just too much for them, although they never quit. ELKHORN 6 DELAVAN 7 The battle of the year— Homecoming. No game ever was more exciting than this one. In the 2nd quarter the Comets shook their ace half, August, loose on a brilliant 60 yard jaunt behind perfect blocking. Nobody laid a hand on him. Sturtevant then attacked what proved to be the winning point from placement. Elkhorn took the kickoff and didn't give up the ball until they had scored. Delo-van's line remained firm and the Elks failed to convert. The Comet’s line again started in the last 2 minutes of the game. The Elks had a first down with 7 yards for a touchdown, but the fighting Comets gave up only 6. BURLINGTON 14 DELAVAN 12 The Comets dropped this one after a heartbreaking game when an official called the ball back from the 3 yard line to the 33 in the last minute of play. The big Burlington line charged through and blocked both of Delavan's conversion attempts. At the close of the season there were 20 letter winners on the Comet squad: Seniors— Honorary Captain Gene Murphy, Don Sturte-vont. Bill Guamer, Don August, Charles Schmal-ing, Albert Kitzman, and Lawrence Davis. The other letter winners were Pat Murphy, William Woda, Gordon Madison, Francis Flahive, Rollie McClellan, Don Hopkins, William Eckhardt, Dick Luther, Edgar Mueller, Donald and Ronald Barnes, Gordon Lieurence, Tom Murphy and Student Manager, Dick Dillenbeck. 20 BASKETBALL Standing: 0. Prospects of the 1945-46 season were questionable because it was impossible to determine just what the outlook was going to be. The nucleus of the squad was made up chiefly of the previous season’s reserves. As the season progressed, the boys showed much improvement and our opponents knew they were in for a busy evening whenever they met the Comets. While we had plenty of speed and good ball handling, the outstanding disadvantage was the lack of height. Captain Madison’s offensive play and scoring led us to many victories. Murphy’s and Hauffe’s defensive work helped the Comets set a satisfactory record. The floor play of forwards August and McClellan also featured. The Comets reserves gave a good account of themselves whenever called upon. Letter winners were G. Madison, G. Murphy, D. August, H. Hauffe, L. Rosencrans, R. Barns, and D. Doherty. Prospects for next season appear to be very bright. With the graduation of two regulars and one reserve, our team should be a title contender in the newly organized league. 22 BASKETBALL B TEAM Standing: Coach W«bb Schulti,, 0. Hon«yag«r, F. Flohive, D. Zimmerman, M Jr- ° X ' Seated: J. Dovi , Copt. E. Mueller. D. Luther, G. lieurence, D. Hopkini. The Comet B Teom was made up of five returning lettermen and new boys. This aggregation consisted of speed, good ball handling, and very good shooting. Although no league standing was kept, the Junior Comets, defeated only once, won the Southern State Championship. Their season's record was 12 won, 4 lost. Victories were achieved by the very sharp shooting of Captain Eddie Mueller. Jim Davis was noted for his ability for getting rebounds and helping out in scoring. Becoming over-anxious, he was lost by the fault route before the end of most every game, lieurence's great speed and Hopkin’s fight for the ball succeeded in many victories. Dick Luther's height helped whenever needed. The regulars were backed up by good capable reserves—Zimmerman, Honeyager, and Flohive. The B squad letter men were Captain Edgar Mueller, Don Hopkins, Dick Zimmerman, Francis Flohive, Dick Honeyager, Dick Luther, Jim Davis, and Gordon Lieurence. No doubt some of these boys will be seen in future lineups in years to come. 23 INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL Standing: Coach A. Pieper. R. Evan . 1. Evan . 0. School, G. Bo . Mgr. Mu«ll r. S at d: R. Being members of the Southern Wisconsin Junior High League, our record wasn’t too impressive. Enrollment of Beloit and Jonesville Junior Highs gave them an advantage. The purpose of this league is the development of future Delovan High School material for future years. Coach Gallo's boys showed much improvement as the season progressed and there isn’t any doubt thot a number of these boys will be seen on future Comet teams. High lights of the season were two victories over our arch-rival Elkhorn. 24 SENIOR G.A.A. Fifth tow: 0. Boneti, I. lead. B. Harris. t. Bruco. 0. Berkholtx, R. Wright, E. Abmo, M. Hummel, M. Monger.
