The mommies dropped off Junior in the circle with care, and the feeling of Christmas rang through the air. The students were nestled on the heaters in the pit, praying for heat and having a fit. With students in red and teachers in green, it was quite the festive Christmas scene. When out in the pit the Acappella s singing began, then the bell rang and they all ran. Off to their class they flew without rest, hoping to pass their upcoming test. And when they arrived they were told that the teacher had phoned saying the test was postponed. With a joyous scream the students were dismissed, looking for a partner from whom they were kissed. As the buses drove away the students shouted an exclamation, Merry Christmas to all and to all a good vacation! 26 christma TWAS THE DAY BEFORE CHRISTMAS CLOCKWISE-START ABOVE: Devin Koele prepares for his big debut ... The girls started practice in August, and not only did they learn how to play volleyball. Coach Beringer also had them out on the track running laps everyday to condition themselves. Conditioning didn't seem to be the big problem. The ability was there; but the team just was not able to get it all together. The conference record of 3-9, however, does not reflect a third place finish at the West Allis Central Invitational or the fact that two players, Sally Jansen and Gretchen Rigert, were selected for the second team All-Conference. The Comets, who in the last several years have been very successful, fell prey to injuries, training rule violations, and inexperience. The season, however, was not a total disappointment as some people would expect, since the adversity that the coaches and players endured pulled them together as a team, and strengthened their attitudes. The Comets did have talent, since the player played both offense and defense. Therefore, the Comets can be proud of sticking together and striving for a common goal. Although the team was inexperienced, with only one senior member, the season was successful since the harriers placed 2nd in the Western Division. Like all other sports, cross country requires hard work and dedication, but in the long run it offers many rewards. Besides meeting new people, members become more determined to work hard at a project. Their will power increases and becomes a driving force behind their success and this carries through even into their personal lives. In the beginning of the season the team stayed in the shadows. but as their record improved, word began to spread and many people turned to watch the girls play. The biggest highlight of the season was the team's defeat of Waterford; Delavan won 61-60 with one second left on the clock to end Waterford s 44 game winning streak. Delavan felt proud to say We beat Waterford!! when Waterford won the class B State Championship title. This is not, however, by any means an accurate reflection of the team's spirit, attitude, or commitment. It was a frustrating year for the players, but not a total loss, since much that can be gained through athletics does not show up in the final standings or box score. First year coach, Deb Ludlow, opened the season with an optimistic outlook ... and an inexperienced team. Throughout the season, the members of the team worked together to improve their game. Anybody who compared the first day of practice to the last would have seen the inprovement. Unfortunately, the improvement came too late to produce a winning season. Despite the losses, the rewards were many. Close friendships evolved. The team shared their losses together, rejoiced over victories, dreaded early Saturday morning bus trips, and fought over whose turn it was to buy the next box ot Nilla Wafers. Overall, for the members, the tennis season was a successful one. After winning the First Annual Comet Tournament, the Comets faltered and fell from first place. However, they came back and finished with a strong second place, and a 6-4 conference record. Clutch hitting by Kennedy and David Frazier, who hit seven homeruns, as well as excellent defense from Bill Persinger, Mike Michalek, Bob Arenz, Todd Metcalf, and Brad Hilbelink, helped the Comets to a satisfying successful season. 84 a sc bail CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP: JUST A BAT'S LENGTH AWAY VARSITY TEAM-FRONT ROW: Greg Godina, manager; Bob Dickerson, Todd Metcalf. Last season, the team won only one conference game and dropped the rest. This year they did improve, winning two conference games. Though the record doesn't look very impressive, they are hopefully building to a stronger team next year. If nothing else, the softball team did know how to have fun, and it takes special talent to be able to keep the morale up and smile when the score is 20-0 in favor of the other team! softbalI 87 The 1985 Girls' Track season exemplified what the words sport and team are all about. The season was filled with hard work, tough competition, good coaches, great friends, victories, and defeats. The team was very small, and was like a second family. They banned together in both victory and defeat; won as a team and lost as a team. This year also brought two rookie coaches, Mark Maas and Kristi Flood. They were more like a big brother and big sister than like coaches. They were always there to give that extra nudge towards victory. The team's conference record was 3-2. Not an outstanding one, but probably a little better than what was expected. Since they are a young team, losing only two seniors, they promise to be even stronger next year. The 1985 Boys' Track season can be described by the team's motto Comet Track is Pride . The boys improved as individuals, and as a team. It is always good to begin the season by winning the first dual meet, especially when the opponent is Jefferson, the 1984 Conference champion. D-DHS lost only one dual meet to Whitewater, ending the season with a dual meet record of 4-1. Whitewater continued to dominate the Southern Lakes Conference, as Delavan placed second to them in both the Western Division and Conference meets. Some believed the boys peaked early as they won in May. Delavan won the Borg Invitational for the first time it its twenty-one year history. Their already mentioned accomplishments, as well as breaking seven records in five events, show the talent found in this year's track team. Eighth boys advanced from Regionals to Sectionals, and the mile relay team advanced to the State Track and Field meet in Madison. As coach Ed Lauzon says, We have no superstars ; the effort put forth by each individual determined how well he performed. boys’ l rack So Whitewater Milton Eikhorn Jefferson Whitewater Milton Eikhorn Jefferson GIRLS' TRACK 3-2 DD Eikhorn 56 74 Jefferson Oo 43 East Troy 52 80 Milton • 53 78 Whitewater 89 43 BOYS TRACK DD JrifttMU Mi 72-5 fclkKwr. We are one in our partying, that makes it all worthwhile. And we stand by each other, we're the class of 85. And they'll know we are seniors by our pride, By our pride. Yes they'll know we are seniors by our pride. We have worked hard together. We have now accomplished much. We have faith in our motto, to come through in the clutch. And we cheer for our comets D D H S — and such. And they'll know we are seniors by our touch, By our touch. Yes they'll know we are seniors by our touch. We will walk out together. We will sadly leave this place. We'll have fun in this our last year, so it will not be a waste. Yes we'll page right through our school books with carefreeness and haste. And they'll know we are seniors by our taste. By our taste. Yes they'll know we are seniors by our taste. But before we up and split We must tell you just a bit. That we are the best of classes, now don't you throw a fit. Since we won't be coming home again you must not forget. That we rule the pit, rule the pit, Rule the pit. Oh you must not forget we rule the pit.
