ERA ’82 Delavan-Darien High School Del a van Wisconsin Volume XXV '25 Years of Excellence' DELAVAN-DARIEN HIGH SCHOOL 1983 marks the 35th year of the successful pursuit of education at D.D.H.S. Over the years, our school, which was officially opened in October of 1957, has had to adapt and modify itself to meet the prevalent changes in its students. Obviously there have been changes in fashion, activities, tradition, and curriculum. Some things, however, have remained the same. Students and faculty were enthusiastic about the new school, but as time progressed, it became apparent that improvements needed to be made. The football team playing at Veteran’s Park and the track teams running on the grass brought about a generous donation by the Borg family in 1961 which resulted in six tennis courts, the track, and the stadium. Additions to the school itself soon became necessary. The foreign language department was added, and also it became important to the faculty and students that they (the students) be allowed to basically determine their own form of education, thus the modular scheduling. This new schedule brought about initial confusion, but is now widely accepted and has proven to be very effective. Along with these changes, there has also been increased expansion: the LMC which took the place of looking back 3 the center courtyard, the new gym. the greenhouse, and the growth of vocational facilities. Recently, there has been the addition of open campus, increased course offerings, scholarship offerings, which presently exceed $40,000. and finally it looks as though there may one day be equality in sports. Students may reminiscence on the seemingly carefree high school days of the 50’s when looking at their own busy schedules which are filled with jobs, never ending homework, and numerous extra-curricular activities. I met so many people. My family helped me a lot. and they gave me so many experiences; kindness. love, and everything that they could. I don't know how I should thank them. Especially my sister Paula, maybe we were not good friends, but I think we were good sisters. We had a few fights. She was the only person who I could have a fight with. We did many things together, and I had a good time with her. The other people who I spent most my time with were my friends at school. I had so much fun with them. Sometimes we shared homework and studying and so on at school. Out of school we enjoyed parties and many other activities. They gave me great times and experiences!? They were so kind to me always. Also they helped my English, such as pronunciation. I hope we can be good friends for a long time. Thank you very much. Of course the teachers of this school were helpful, too. Even when they were busy they tried to answer my questions. I would like to thank them for their help, and also for AES club, without them. I couldn't have had a great year like this. Now I have to say goodbye to all of them. It is just like a heavy storm for me. Thanks again for all of you. and I hope that you will stay in touch with me. See you againll Love Eliroko Morioka 2- 44-11 Yoyogi Shibuya-ku Tokyo 151 JAPAN It is hard to sum up the experiences of a whole school year In a few words, but from my experience as a YFU student (Youth for Understanding) here at Delavan-Darien High School. I can say it is an excellent place for exchange students. When you read this. I'll be back in West Germany in my high school, but that doesn't mean it is all over and forgotten. I will always remember the fun I've had here- Homeroom 207 with Mr. Deschner ( Big D ). ten people at one table in the cafeteria at lunch time, boring mods in the LMC. wild discussions m US Politics; football and basketball games (Elkhornl) There has been some stress, too. like too many assignments, ( term paper is due tomorrow, maybe I better start writing it now ) but that was only minor because I didn't really care about schoolwork. I think this school provides many opportunities for everyone, and I have taken many interesting classes. In fact. I have to admit that I like your school better than mine. I'll nuss good old D.D.H.S. Be proud to be a CometII I had a lot of fun in the cross-country team, although it was sometimes a pain. (Running out to Elm Ridge Road- A car is coming. Oh my gosh, if that's the coach Let’s start running, quick!”) There have been a lot of new impressions for me throughout this year and I’d like to thank everybody who made it possible for me to have this great experience, including of course my family, the Verrill'S; my friends, who helped me to get to know how this school works; my teachers, who were very nice and understanding; my counselor. Mr. Schmidt; Mrs. Burnette, who was always there for me when I was In trouble again, and the school administration for providing all this for me. All together I can say it has been a great year and if you should ever get the chance of becoming an AFS. YFU or a Rotary student. I advise you to take the opportunity. Maybe it takes a little courage to go away from home for such a long time, but it is defmtely worth it. You can't imagine how much you learn just being in another country, community, school and family. Anyway, it is hard to say goodbye and I'd like to keep in touch. Keep me informed about what's going on at D.D.H.S. Sigrid Oertel Gartenwegs 2305 Heikendorf West Germany I'd like to send special thanks to my good friend Hiroko (Hoki) and my sister. Jamie. Thanks for everything and take care. Love. Sigrid . StcyicJ 0 4 1 48 afs Our Foreign Students Say Goodbye Thank you Comets. If I look back over this year I spent here, there are a million things I've to thank you for. You Comets have made this year fantastic. Words can’t say what this year meant for me. I learned so much about myself, my family, and my country. But not |ust that. I got to know another culture with Its traditions and people. All this is made possible by you. the Comets, and all those very nice people here in Delavan. During this year I made some very good friends. I spent some wonderful times with them which I'll never forget. Sure, there were some bad times too. but I think that belongs with it. I hope that next year's AFS-students will have it as good when they come to D.D.H.S. This year has really been the most exciting year of my life. I did not only learn about America, but especially about myself. Boy. was I fortunate that I could spend my year with the Comets in Delavan. It is very hard for me to express in a few words the detail of my experiences. All I can really say is it was great! Before coming to the big States, you have special visions. But once you are here, everything turns into reality. You realize how much the two countries differ. (Not always hamburgers and skycrapers.) In everybodys lives there are some disappointments and hard times, but this is part of the experience. And during these times. I have met some wonderful people who helped me and AFS a great deal. I'd like to give some special thanks to Jerry and Hiroko who were my wonderful buddies. Also to my great family, the Moehrkes who I love very much. My door will always be open for you. My best wishes to all of you! Love. Markus Lauber Gesegnetmattstrasse 2 6CC6 LUZERN SWITZERLAND My very special thanks goes out to the Family Jones where I was very fortunate to stay for the year and whom I love very much. They were always there when I needed them and did the very best to make my stay unforgettable. I'd like to give special thanks to Mark and Fflroko to whom I have come very close. When I will go home I will tell about what a neat place Wisconsin is. and especially Delavan. and I will recommend that everybody come over and see the place I love. phone Oil 41 41 SI 52 31 If you are in my neighborhood please do not hesitate to come and visit me.
