Homecoming brought with it a lot of work, but mostly fun. The town was decorated with banners encouraging the Comet team and warning the Badgers of their impending doom. Breakfast was served to all the varsity football players and coaches before school on the day of the game. Basketball season brought a rush of excitement. Plans were made and carried out for pep assemblies, decoration of the teams' lockers and generally warming up the school to get the team fired up. We had a great time this year and appreciate all the support from the teams, fans, and especially the Brew Crew . Jeff Thacker became the premiere runner in the Southern Lakes Conference. The highlight of the season was beating conference and regional champions, Mukwonago, on a cold, wet, and windy day. This made up for the poor post season tournament showing. Since the J. V. .team was also 8-3, next year appears to be another good year with returning team members. - Darrell Hessenthaler I. The team finished the season with four wins and five losses. Some high points of the football season were our rainy Homecoming victory over Lake Geneva and our fourth quarter comeback over Elkhorn. Even though the offense had a hard time getting started, our defense played superbly the whole season. We had a fine group of players this year and are looking forward to an enjoyable season in 1978. The 1977 Girls' Swim season was characterized by outstanding performances meet after meet. The culmination of the conference competition was a 1st place in Conference Relays and a 2nd place in the Conference Championships. Each member of the team strove to improve her individual performance in each meet, consequently the rewards of coaching were great and I feel, equal to the satisfaction of accomplishment the individual athlete received this season. Ms. Miller 26 โ swimming Do Well In Conference Tennis '77 proved to be a successful and rewarding season placing second in the Conference Meet and third in the conference. One of the highlights of the season was the outstanding performance of freshman, Wendy Robbins, who advanced from Sub-Sectional play to Sectionals and on to State competition. Another highlight of the season was performed by both doubles teams in the Conference Meet. Seniors, Sue Brown and Nancy Walsh, and sophomores Kelly Campbell and Mickey Hirte won first place medals in doubles competition. M.J. It was the school's second most winning season ever. The squad members had a good attitude throughout the season. Team spirit and willingness to work together was perhaps the one characteristic of the group which stood out the most. Carmen Represents Wrestlers At State The dual match and tournament portion of our season were not the best a D-DHS team has produced. The boys who wrestled regularly, however, were conscientious and hard workers. Without their help and encouragement the final season results may not have been the same. I am referring of course, to the 1978 Wisconsin unlimited champion. Through Tim Carmin's efforts, our school finished ninth in the state tournament, with a team score of 30 points. It took us half of the season to suit up a full varsity team, but once we did, the results were promising. By the last two meets of the year, we were doubling the score of our fir$t meet. Although our conference and regional team of seven girls took a seventh out of ten and an eighth out of eleven respectively, the girls themselves bettered their scores. Three of the seven girls were freshmen, one was a sophomore, two were juniors, and one was a senior. With six of these girls returning in 78-79, we should be able to begin the season on a positive note. Lynn Koehl gymnastics โ Dedication Produces Winning Teams D-DHS swim season was one of the most successful team efforts of the past three years. The swim team has a tremendous future to look forward to with all but one swimmer returning. Con-si stant performances by our upperclassmen plus some encouraging performances by our freshmen and sophomore swimmers carried us through a good swim season. J. A big bright spot, however, was winning our D-D invitational against a strong field including Whitewater and Waterford both of which finished ahead of us in the conference. This year's team was a fine group of young men and will be looked back on in years to come with many fond memories of the times we had, both good and bad with the good far out-weighing the bad. Coach Johnson tennis โ 37 Comet Nine Steals Tournament Bid The 1978 D-DHS Baseball team advanced to sectional play for the second straight year. They did this by beating the teams that finished ahead of them in the Southern Lakes Conference race. They beat the undefeated conference champions Wilmot 2-1, and the second place team, Badger, 7-4 in regional play. They lost the first sectional game to Kenosha Tremper 7-1, the state's second largest school in enrollment. The team ended the season with an 11 win, 6 loss record, which was good for a third place finish. Tom Scharfenberg x v r - f w . . . The 1978 Girls1 Softball team's greatest asset was its defensive play which was backed by some excellent hitting. In the short two year history of girls' softball great strides have been made in developing a sound program at D-DHS. The win-loss record of 7-4 in dual-triangular competition and a seventh place in the conference meet does not fully reflect the progress of this fine team. We placed fourth in the regionals and qualified four to sectionals and one to state. Junior Val Kobasick, selected as the team's most valuable competitor, placed first in the conference running the 110 yd.-low hurdles. How simple It Is to spend time but not give of yourself, to occupy your proper place but never be fulfilled. Yet there are those who have given, who have been rewarded. Yes, the first step was dangerous, or so it seemed โ the distance too long. the rehearsals too tedious, the movements too difficult, the requirements too demanding. Soon, however, the moments cartwheeled as you ION played and sang and competed. You cheered and danced and raised unbelievable funds. You recited, demanded and persuaded. You came the distance from that one step and shared a part of you. RICH IN S. J. In competition, the chapter was well represented at the regional and state level with winners in single contests as well as their fourth consecutive national competitor in Rick Persinger. Socially, jobs got in the middle of many planned activities, but the fieldtrips and few pizza gym activities were well attended. The highlight of the year was again a day with the top advertising people in the Midwest at the Ad Age 100 Best Commercials showing. A retrospect of 1977-78 finds that the D-DHS chapter acquired many high honors. The distinguished Golden National Chapter Award was bestowed on our chapter at the National Convention in Kansas City. In the photo at right, Mr. Holman explains this award at the FFA banquet. This being the frosting on the cake leads us to the other achievements. Many firsts were achieved, including the first work experience student to be sent abroad and the new outdoor laboratory of thirteen acres, in its infintile stages. This lab will be used in cooperation with the Boy Scouts of America. Every cake must have some decorative green, and green is the major color of the newly built green house that the chapter erected. All in all the 1977-78 school year brought new horizons and a taste of sweet success for the Dela-van-Darien FFA chapter. FRONT ROW: Oave Bunnell. My year in Delavan has really been a great time for me. There have been many totally new experiences. I met so many nice and friendly people and I will never forget them. When I first came here I didn't know much about the American school system. But here at D-DHS I got to like it very much. Especially the great variety of courses impressed me very much. In Germany they just don't offer classes like Woods, which I really enjoyed. The hardest thing to adjust to in the beginning was that school lasts until 3:20 p.m. and not just 'til noon like back home. Another thing I enjoyed very much were all the different sports. I had a great time watching football in fall and basketball in winter. Even though I didn't participate very much (or at least not very long) on any team, I think they are a lot of fun ana a great thing to be in. I hope there will be many other kids from foreign countries who can spena a year here in Delavan and at D-DHS. I will never forget this year. Always remember me. Love, Wolfgang 58 โ afs AFS Cultivates Knowledge Of People And Places I still remember when my friends back home asked me why I was going to waste one year in the U.S. after I had already graduated in Austria. But although school here is completely different and academically a lot easier, I learned so much this year. For the first time I started really thinking and comparing. I realized how much everybody is influenced by his environment and grows up with certain ideals without even being aware of them โ like the pledge of allegiance to the flag. D-DHS certainly offers many interesting extra-curricular activities that make school a lot more fun, but on the other hand, I noticed that therefore the lives of must students mainly revolves around school. One thing I don't like about D-DHS is the huge class difference among south commons, north commons, burn-outs, and the popular people. It's not fair to judge people by their belonging to a certain study area. I certainly don't consider myself better only because AFS provided a North Commons pass for me that I hardly ever used for this reason. I want to thank the few true friends I've found at D-DHS who accepted me the way I am and for whom I didn't have to pretend. I didn't want this to sound pessimistic, in fact, I'm very happy here otherwise. I can't imagine going home, leaving my family whom I love so much, my friends and also work, which was a great experience and a lot of fun. It's true that Delavan is a small town and not exceptional in any way, but there are many wonderful memories connected with it. Trudging down the halls past the science rooms one can be quickly overcome by the peculiar fumes of the chemists' work.
