They proposed a $1.4 million expansion program. Originally, the expansion was to Include an auxiliary gym, vocational education classrooms, instructional materials center and an addition to the cafeteria. Voter opposition, however, brought the program to a referendum. The school board cut the expansion program to include only the I. M. C. and the cafeteria addition. F.vcn With the reduction, voters rejected the building program. Space is still at a premium in the high school. Hopefully new efforts will be made to rectify the situation. 1. WENDORF Custodian On the evening of October 29, 1974, a group of DDHS students presented two short plays and a mime to an appreciative crowd in the high school auditorium. The first of the two plays was an original cutting of Antoine de Saint Exupery's classic French children's story, LE PETITE PRINCE or THE LITTLE PRINCE; and the second one-act was titled THE VALIANT. Ed Bruley, who has been working hard to develop his natural dramatic abilities, provided a comic interlude during the set change as he portrayed a drunken doctor engaging in open heart suigery. His performance was done without words and demonstrated how communication can be done silently. THE LITTLE PRINCE posed some special problems. First, it has to be transformed from its original storybook form into a play. Lori Blackman, who portrayed the narrator, and Lynnettc Bates, who played the Prince, botli worked hard in making this transformation possible. They also assembled the necessary props to allow the two of them to enact the numerous situations required by the Prince's travels. Rounding out the cast of THE LITTLE PRINCE was Debbie Lee who graciously portrayed a flower. Sandy Delaney and Scott Marzahl presented THE VALIANT, a story about a young girl whose search for her lost brother brings her face to face with a condemned man. The roles were difficult, but long hours of rehearsal resulted in the opportunity to represent Delavan-Daricn at the sub-district One Act Play Contest in Lake Geneva on Saturday, November 2, where the play received a B rating. When speaking of the one act show, or any dramatic event at DDHS in 1974-1975, one would certainly be amiss if he failed to comment on the exceptionally fine Job done by the lighting crew guided by Mr. Warren Race. In addition to Mr. Race, 1 wish to extend a particular expression of appreciation to Eric Lowell, Gary Lowell, and Doug Lloyd for their cooperation, creativity, and technical skills. Rick Hurlbut A. Once upon a time in the Kingdom of DDHS a great festival was held to celebrate the return of the Comet. Each class built floats, and games were held in the arena. Gladiators came forth to defend the honor of their class and two members of the noble class, Mrs. Serpe and Mr. Hurlbut, were elected Ma and Pa Homecoming. A procession followed when the jubilant crowd joined hands and ran to the site of the parade. For a time the crowd dispersed but they returned in full force to observe the contest between the Comets and the Chiefs in the coliseum. The Comets emerged victorious. Queen Kathy Oleston was crowned before a cheering audience and plans were made for attending the dance that evening. The following eve, the members of the Kingdom attended a ball founded on the theme Stairway to Heaven. King Bryan and Queen Kathy reigned over the festivities far into the evening. tevin Gilford, Judy Miller, John Dennertr Wendy DTTW. .ancy Kocs, Brad Porter, Andy Cameron, Joe Williams. The Cafeteria The bell sounds lib and the race to the cafeteria is on. A line forms, beginning at the door of the cafeteria and extends past the guidance office. While waiting, starving students listen to the harmonious rumblings of the stomachs around them. Slowly, inch by inch, the line begins to move, finally you approach the door of the cafeteria and pull out your 55 cent lunch ticket, ready for inspection. You made it and now you get your tray, napkin, silverware and milk. As you round the corner, and face the cooks, some of the familiar phrases heard are: What'll it be: Sauerkraut or wax beans? , You forgot your milk! Hold the peas, please , Only one butter! and No biscuit with the barbeques! Now that you have all your delicious food, you enter the cafeteria only to realize that there is no place to sit... JOHN McCOY This year's musical truly lived up to its name in the eyes of its participants and viewers! “The Fantasticks is a parable about love, created by Torn Jones and Harvey Schmidt. Besides being the longest running off-Broadway musical, it made a long-lasting impression on the people who were around DDHS March 7th and 8th. Watching The Fantasticks on stage makes one say, I could do that, but we all soon found THAT was easier said than done. This is 3 very- so-phistocatcd way of presenting a simple message of love, values and human nature, requiring great delicacy and flexibility since nothing like it has been presented here before. The feeling being created also depended heavily on the cast. Having such a small cast, a boy, a girl, 2 fathers, a bandit, a mute, and 2 old actors made it even more unique. We were all accustomed to being parts of a large, spectacular cast, such as Fiddler , and suddenly we were alone. We stood there, 9 people, on stage, exposed, with the weight of the message we were presenting resting on us, with no one to fall back on. Frightening? Exciting? Yes! And quite thrilling as well. We all got to know ourselves, and each other, as we became the characters we would be at the end of six weeks rehearsal. Throughout those six weeks, we all followed the same schedule. Music memorized, then lines, and finally the blocking. ( Mrs. Shreves, when I say this, where do I stand?? ) When we weren't on stage, we were seated at the rear of the platforms, facing the backdrop. We were to sit as still as possible, and to be as inconspicuous as we could. Being on stage for the whole two hour performance was only one aspect of tills play that was different. We were also unaccustomed to playing on more than one level, and having only one set. It really took as much imagination for the players as it did the audience. The illusions and characterizations aren't all that burdened us. We also had to be capable of moving as we sang some very demanding music, which was a milestone for us to overcome. We had to coordinate our singing with the orchestra's activities, which was also time consuming! All in all, this production was a thrilling, unique, and memorable experience that we'll all long remember! Janet Hurdt The Fantasticks A.F.S. Carnival Co-operation! Came ! Excitement! Fun! These are just a few of the factors which helped to make this year’s carnival a tremendous success. With We Walk Together as the theme, students and community gave their time and energy, raising $1,300 to help defray the cost of bringing another foreign student to Delavan next year. Unlocking the doors of the world is a major objective of AFS. Through love and support, it's working. Wendy McNamara AFS Carnival Chairwoman Spirit Week Fifties Day, which highlighted Spirit Week, meant searching your grandmother's attic for garb of the Fabulous Fifties. Rolled jeans and greased hair, knee-length plaid skirts with bobbic sox, and saddle shoes were the accepted attire. Teacher-Student switch day found Kerry O'Brien working out green slips while Mr. Hurlbut was kicked out of the library just when he was dealt a good hand. Mr. Kinnunen skipped French class and Mr. Kowieski nearly drowned while playing water polo. On Sports Day, flippers, roller skates, tennis togs, baseball caps, football jerseys and a riding habit demonstrated some students' favorite sports. Spirit Week was meant to create spirit and perhaps for a few short hours it did. Colour My World 1975 Junior Prom April 26, 1975 Luxembourg Room Holiday Inn Queen Kathy Dragel King Bill Baar The D-DHS Junior Prom is more than a formal dance that ends in the early hours of the morning. Instead it means group involvement and fun. Prom starts in full swing about six weeks before the big day. As soon as we accepted the honor of being the King and Queen, we also accepted the big job of preparation. Preparation means decorating, rehearsing, much worrying, pictures, more worrying, and finally Prom. This was a new experience because neither of us had ever gone to Prom before. After the many weeks of worrying, tilings started to fall in place. Many members of our class had specific tasks they had to accomplish, like mak- ing a crown, building a trellis, ordering flowers, and making refreshments. The Junior Class worked together very well, and were enthusiastic about the big event. This really helped make Prom successful. Finally the big day arrived. Saturday, April 26, will definitely remain in our memory for a long time to come. Prom did not occur Just in the evening, it meant the whole day. In the morning we picked up the flowers and boutonnieres. At three o'clock in the afternoon wc had rehearsal. Dinner was at 7:00, and by 8:30 we had to be at the Prom. 1 am sure that many couples will long recall the decorations which ranged from multicolored daisies, ice sculptures, colored streamers, and the white wooden arch-way. We also enjoyed the music by AX . Post Prom was also enjoyable, although it was not attended by all who had gone to the Prom. Decorative accents were the colorful rainbow, color wheels, more daisies, and music by Diamond-T. We l ope everyone enjoyed the evening as much as we did. S-afc The School year 1974-75 has been one of Use best year in my life Coming to the U. S. and staying in Delavan has been a wonderful experience for me. Attending D-DHS has been terrific! In the high school 1 have found lots of friends and tenchcrs that were willing to help me. Everybody has been really nice and has contributed to make this year so good. In this year I have learned to live with other ideas, customs and ways of life. Some of my most memorable experiences have been being able to speak in a foreign language, and seeing snow for the first time. I also have learned that you can have good relationships with people from another country no matter how far away or how different it is from home. I have to thank all of you and hope you will keep helping A. F. S. So this program will continue. Attending school in another country is a major part of the A.F. S. experience. My year at D-EfriS was great. D-DHS offers a wide variety of subjects and extra-curricular activities, catering to a wide body of students. Schools at home cater almost primarily for those academically inclined. I only wish more kids here would make more use of their free time, I. S., and extra-curricular activities. I am lucky to have had no language problem as this made settling in and getting to know people somewhat easier. I was confused, however, to find some people who believed me when I told them we spoke Malaysian or rode kangaroos to Australia at low tide. Well- the only clue as to the where abouts of Wisconsin I had was the Midwest . Of course, by now, I even know the where abouts of Delavan, and I am beginning to appreciate most of the American way of life. Kids here have pretty much the same interests goals, and aspirations in life as people in general the world over. I have learned much this year I could not hove learned any other way. A special Thank you to all the people who were friendly, kind, and helpful to me through the year. I hope someday to sec as many of you as possible again, In New Zealand, maybe, or when I return to Delavan. A Cappella Performances at the World's Fair in Spokane, Washington, the Capitol in Madison, and the coliseum in Milwaukee were Just some of the activities of the A cappella Chorus. Over $18,000 was raised via a multitude of activities to provide an airplane trip to Spokane and a varied list of activities including a one day trip to Canada. As a result of being selected as one of the two World's Fair representatives from Wisconsin, the State Teachers' Association asked the group to perform in Milwaukee for their 5,000 members. Not to be overlooked was the concert at the State Capitol at the Governor's request. Some 8,000 people have heard this year's group, but most appreciated was the fine reception accorded by their fellow students and the people of the Delavan-Darien Community. There are other rewards besides those directly concerned with performing. The choir has learned how to be better human beings by working together to achieve a common goal. Cheerleaders Wrestling At the start of the 1974-1975 wrestling season, I was quite optimistic. We had 6 returning lettermen and as many promising prospective wrestlers to fill the remaining weight classes. As time passed, however, several people decided there were other things more to their liking than the time and effort required for wrestling. This left a varsity wrestling team composed of 4 seniors, 2 juniors, and 7 sophomores. Considering the lack of experience, the team did well for themselves compiling an overall dual match record of 7 wins, 5 losses and 1 tie. The lack of experience became evident at the end of the season in the conference and regional tournaments, when the team placed 8th and 7th respectively. With the passage of time the coaching t3sk became one of rebuilding rather than removing the rough edge from a veteran squad. It Is hoped that another year will bring better results from the wrestling team at Delavan-Darien High School. Two meets in the loss column were very dose. Highlight of the season was our win over Janesville Craig. The varsity team was made up of two freshmen, who lettered in their first year, eight sophomores and four seniors. It was an unusual year with great variations of ability from the very beginning swimmers who could not swim the width of the pool at the outset of the season, to a few veteran swimmers. I'd call it a successful building year. The improvement in individual times was excellent to good, which indicates a much stronger team for the 1975 season. This optimism was somewhat tempered by several pre-season practice injuries and a lackluster performance in our first game against Clinton. All of which retarded hope for progress. This lack of progress was due to the fact that the injuries required constant personnel changes, and the fact that due to fluctuations in performance it was difficult to come up with a definite starting line-up. This resulted in the loss of our first four conference games in which we played very poorly. However, the trend was reversed in the second quarter of the Muk-wonago game and from then on to the end of the season the team continued to make steady improvement, and everyone turned in an outstanding performance in our last game against Big Foot. This football squad was exceptional in that they never gave up and continued to put forth a good effort in both practice and in games, and the results were rewarding. The potential for a good season were always present, it took perseverance and a rebuilding of confidence after a very shaky start. The coaching staff was extremely proud of this year's squad. Even though a championship season was not achieved the courage displayed by the team, and their continual hard work to reach a new goal, was the thing that made this such a satisfying season. This alone makes the whole program worth while, and it was a pleasure to be associated with such a fine group of young men. A familiar sight in the halls of DDHS was Brian and his wheelchair being pushed to and from class. Brian Fraser prepares to demonstrate his new electric wheelchair. Standing behind Brian are Lee Holman and Tom Wescott, the two boys who initiated the campaign. Next to Brian is his grandfather, William P. Jacobsen. The spirit of 78 became evident early in the fall when several of Brian's friends got together and decided to try and raise enough money for an electric wheelchair. Although A Buck for Brian Day was not as successful as first hoped, they soon realized their project had a lot of support. Within a few weeks, student groups were washing cars, and baking cookies to raise money, and contributions from the community were arriving. Soon enough contributions from both the school and community had been received to place an order and Brian's wheelchair was on its way. Before a packed gymnasium, at the DDHS-Elkhorn basketball game on January 7th, Brian was presented his electric wheelchair. Many people had a part in the spirit that gave Brian a standing ovation as he wheeled himself off the floor. 110- freshmen Sophomores Whiz Thru Second Year Addic, Kathleen Anclam, William Anderson, Lizabeth Aponte, John Barry, Judith Bashaw, Cynthia Bates, Lynette Beaulieu, Donald Be re, Nancy Bethel Carrie Bierhardt, Anne Blackman, Lori sophomores- 111 Blanke, Betty Boness, Linda Boniface, Scott Boviall, Patrick Bradford, Wally Braenne, Rory Breidenbach, Toni Brick, Cheryl Bultman, Jane Burton, Lance Carroll, Heidi Carter, Steve Cary, Karen Chesko, Jay Cleveland, Brenda Consoer, Cynthia Constable, Tim Contreras, Alex Cook, Tom Coon, Brian Copus, Cindy il2-sophomorc$ Crispcll, Jeff Cunningham, Jeff Dahl, Kathy Dahl, Lisa Danielson, Jeana Davis, Chris Davison, Jeanne Deal, Julie Decker, Julie Delaney, Sandy Dergc, Gerald DcWeerd, Barbara Dillenbeck, Kathy DuCharme, Anne Duesterbeck, Cindy Duncan, Linda Edwards, Jack Eicksteadt, Richard Emery, Robert Erckfritz, Susan Erkfitz, Debbie Evans, John Faber, Greta Faber, Nancy Faretta, Bill Featherstone, Ruth Ferguson, Dorothy Fieldhouse, Cathy Fladten, David Fleming, Lon Frieders, Kevin Galindo, Oralia Gallagher, Virginia Galles, Joel Galvan, David Garea, Diane Gerharz, Tim Gifford, Susan Godina, Virginia Goff, Ken Gonzalez, Ricky Greer, Gordon Grossman, Linda sophomores-113 Grover, Mike Gruel, Susie Haman, Cheryl Hanchette, Margaret Hanchette, Paul Hansen, Greg Hartmann, Dave Hejhal, Wayne Herron, Sherry Hisel, Ernest Holden, Nanette Holt, John Holt, Millie Huschka, Mary Huttner, Lori Jacobs, Ken Jansen, Kevin Jeninga, Belinda Jutz, Jesse Jutz, Robin Karcher, Linda Kilroy, Terry Klade, Terry Klevin, Diane Kocs, Nancy Kochi, George Koepnick, Linda Kohler, Mark Kosche, Peter Krause, Amber Krogman, Mary Kruizenga, Sandra Kuntz, Mike Kuntz, Dave Lamb, Patti 114-sophomores Lee, Debbie Leek, John Linden, Patricia Liss, James Lloyd, Douglas Logan, Jon Logterman, Douglas Long, Terri Long, William Lowell, Gary McCabe, Dan McClellan, Mari McGregor, Tim McKoy, Carrie Maass, Coleen Mansfield, David Marsicano, Roxanne Mar ahl, Curt Maurer, Ronald Mawhinncy, James Metzinger, Cathy Meyer, Tammy Miles, Chuck Miller, Judy Minarick, Jim Minard, Laura Mohr, Patricia Monroe, John Moore, Charlene Morales, Fernando Moronez, Mary Moronez, Santos Mraz, Donna Mueller, Tim Mulderink, Virginia Munger, James Murphy, Mark Ncrgc, Jeffery Neubaucr, John Neubauer, Rickie Oates, Kelley O'Brien, Patrick O'Connor, Jim O'Connor, Karen Oder, LuAnn O'Dicmo, Ken Ohl, Mary sophomores-115 O'Keefe, Kim Oleston, Sandra Perkins, Denise Peterson, Jim Petkoff, Bill Peyer, Gregory Pierson, Jim Piggott, Charlotte Pils, Catherine Plcncncr, Kim Polzin, Dave Porter, Brad Povolny, Mary Prater, Dean Pyrz, Cynthia Ramirez, Daniel Regcster, Joseph Reyenga, Sally Rios, Juanita Robbins, Tracy Rodriguez, Norma Rodriguez, Ramiro Roherty, Kelly Roling, Mark Ronning, Kirby Ross, Bob Rowe, Debra Rowland, David Rozajewski, Cheryl Ruiz, Mary Sanders, Kimberly Sargent, Valerie Schauer, Debra Schell, Laurie Schilt, Robert Schipper, Debbie Schurman, Ron Schutt, Denise Scott, Marcia Scott, Tim Sepulveda, Elizabeth Shafer, Mark II6-sophomores Shappee, Gertrude Sheffield, Mary Shipman, Mark Simons, Gina Smith, Greg Smith, Walter Snyder, Cindy Stangler, Sue Stcrken, Karen Stevenson, Robert Stirmel, Vickie Stokholm, Greg Stokholm, Jeff Swets, Edward Swets, Gwen TerStcege, Nancy Tidwell, Steven Tifft, Shelly Trapp, Vickie Traynor, Cynthia Truckenbrod, Dennis Tsakiri, John VanDan, Bev VanDyken, Grace Vasque2, Ismale Vasquez, Julie Vitullo, Donald Voegeli, Craig sophomores-117 Weilandt, Thomas Welch, Andrew Welch, David Welch, Thomas Whalen, Debbie Whalen, Michael Wheeler, Richard White, Mary White, Roger Wilke, Betsy Wilson, Anne Wilson, Dawn Yahnke, James Yazbec, Cindy Zeasman, Sally Zellmer, Carol Zweifel, Scott 118-sophomores Juniors Mark Third Year CLASS OFFICERS: Terri Deschner, secretary; Jerry Deschner, president; Rob Frazier, vice president; Mary Tully, treasurer.
