English — Informality Breeds Industry Mr. Tighe with an alert (reshman English class in the Multi-Media room. The English Department this year seems to consist of a swinging, open-minded group of intellectuals. One merely has to walk by, or into, the English office and observe the informality of the environment in order to be convinced of this fact. Maybe some of the teachers are stern disciplinarians in the classroom, but to watch them in action when they are all together makes it obvious that they are only normal, fun-loving people. 8 english Large Groups— Conferences Aid Students RIGHT: Students show interest in large group English presentation. As freshmen, they were immature and childish and they had to suffer many humiliating injustices. For some, it was their first football game or their first Prom, and of course these exfreshmen will never forget their first Homecoming celebration. The seniors have many memories from that freshmen year. But their memories didn't end there. After three long years the class of '70 worked on their first major project, the Junior Prom. King Tim Tul-ly, elected by his classmates, chose Judy Cal-lum as his Queen to reign over The Look of Love . These and many other memories will never be forgotten, but one memory is outstanding — this is Senior Skip Day. On March 10, 1970 the senior class united together and completed the most successful Senior Skip Day in the history of Delavan-Darien High School. Now at the end of the year, once again the time has come for the senior class to leave. But the class of 70 won't be leaving without taking with them many memories of their years at D-DHS. Student Council Is The identification sign calendar in the front of our school in maintained by the Council. Every night after school and during basketball games the canteen provides pop and goodies. The Id sign and canteen are but two activities sponsored by the Council. Numerous other events fall under their supervision in their attempt to promote school spirit and all activities for the general welfare of the school, as well as training in the democratic process. The Council also promotes harmonious relationships between students and faculty, as well as serving as a clearing house to aid in the solution of school problems. 70 student council This year the Student Council sponsored an Ugly Couple Contest as a fund-raising project. Laura Mueller and Debbie Dowse, above, were one of four couples who participated. AFS students, Julie Aspinall and Mitiku Terfasa were the winners who were presented with a plaque. Your Tool in School The pie-eating contest is not only one of the most popular events in the Field Day Schedule, but one of the most filling. Field Day is traditionally sponsored at the time of Homecoming by the Council. Committees are set up for the various events including the water balloon toss, pie-eating contest, gunny sack race and many others. The bonfire and snake dance, perhaps the largest part of the Homecoming festivities, are also arranged by the Student Council. To instill school spirit, the Council sponsors buses to football games and wrestling meets. The exciting swimmer wrestler basketball game is sponsored by the Council. All student council members are urged to voice the opinions of their friends and homeroom on the various issues discussed at the regular meetings. The new dress code has been approved largely due to the hard work of Council members. student council 71 This year AFS students Mitiku Terfasa and Julie Aspinall. This year, the staff, advised by Mrs. Linda Metzke, Mr. Carl Tighe, and Mrs. Linda Zell, faced difficult problems which included the selling of the yearbook, meeting deadlines, fitting copy, and cropping pictures. The team looked forward to arguing the pros and cons of United States' Unilateral intervention into foreign countries. The debate team was composed of all new and inexperienced members. This was one of the difficulties that they had to overcome and they did. By the time that the team debated at their second tournament they were ready and eager to meet their opponents. It is difficult to determine the right responses during a debate, simply because it is such a controversial issue. The winners are based solely on how well they presented their arguments and the value of the evidence they used to support their statements. Debating is no easy job and we would like to wish next years' team lots of luck. 78 debate Forensic Members Compete The Forensics Organization offers various challenging categories. That is the case this year, but the boys still deserve credit. Many hours of hard work were put in by the boys. All this wasn't easily justified while they were losing, but the boys still put out 100% effort. The first game saw' the head coach in the hospital. Mr. Tom Scharfenberg took charge and after losing the first game to Wilmot the boys came back to win three in a row. In Lake Geneva the Comets were guided by a healthy Zimmerman. The Comets that day whipped our rivals, the Badgers, 21-0. It looked like another winnng season was in store for the Comets. But something happened. Injuries struck key players and the Comets dropped five in a row. The Comets ended up in ninth place ahead of East Troy. Mr. Zimmerman has a big job on his hands, but knowing our head coach, the Comets will again be close to the top or even on top of the Southern Lakes Conference in 1970. 104 varsity football R. Co-captains were Rick Martin and Curt Van-der Kooi. The season's top rusher and scorer was Tom Cleveland, while the leading pass receiver was Terry Frazier. Junior Comets Struggle Through Losing Season The Junior Varsity football team, coached by Mr. Ron Bronson, posted a record of 2 wins and 5 losses this season. The team started the season by winning the first two games — Wilmot 25-6 and Salem Central 6-0. The future indeed looked bright.
