On the following pages are pictures of some of the highlights of the 1963-64 school year. These activities are open to all, and only add to the enjoyment of your high school years if you participate in them. The enjoyment you get from high school isthe result of the things you have done. In this school you are very lucky in that there is literally something for everyone. No matter what your interests are, either there is some kind of an organization concerned with the same thing, or one is being started. The decision to participate or not to participate is up to you, the individual student, and no one else. Carroll Treasurer Mr. Irvine Llewellyn Director Mr. Donald Beardsley Clerk Their Time for The main goal of the Board of Education is to have the most efficiently run and best school possible. The school board members meet every third Monday of each month so that this can be accomplished. In addition to these meetings there are many special meetings which they must attend. By attending conventions, talking with board members and superintendents from other schools, and reading school board publications, the Board of Education reviews its ideas on how to cope with problems in the school. The five members must also hold an annual meeting of the school district and represent the district at various functions of the school. 8 Mr. John Hamburg Principal July--October 1963 Your Education Perhaps the most heartbreaking time of the year was when the Delavan-Darien High School Principal, Mr. John Hamburg, died in New Mexico while attending an executive committee meeting of the National Secondary School Principals Association. Mr. Hamburg, who came to De la van-Darien High School in July of 1963, was proud of it, its facilities, faculty and students and mentioned this fact frequently. After his death a memorial fund, established by the students and faculty, was used to purchase a set of THE GREAT BOOKS OF THE WESTERN WORLD for the school library. Mr. Raymond Anderson, superintendent of schools since March of 1963, acted as principal, with the help of Mr. Joseph Rondeau, Spanish teacher and assistant principal. Thanks to the help of these two, the school managed to operate smoothly until Mr. Allen D. Olson was employed as principal. Mr. Olson, who had been principal of the New Richmond High School, assumed his duties at D-DHS in January of 1964. Mr. R. A. Anderson Superintendent Mr. Allen D. Olson Principal Mr. Joseph Rondeau Assistant Principal 9 Mrs. Dora Kooistra, Mrs. Edith Siert, Mrs. Evelyn Wendorf, and Mrs. Mildred Hipp arc shown at the left serving lunch to the students. Mrs. Bernice Seibert, the other cook, is not pictured. They Maintain High Standards D-DHS custodians, pictured above, arc Mr. Clarence Wiser, Mr. Marlyn Fehrm, and Mr. Willard Wendorf. Mrs. Siert, Mrs. Hipp, Mrs. Kooistra, Mrs. Wendorf, and Mrs. Seibert are the five cooks at D-DHS. They are responsible for the meals served to the students everyday. Some of their duties include preparing menus and the meals, making reports, ordering food and other supplies, and serving the meals. They work hard to please the students in their likes and dislikes for certain foods. Mr. Wiser, Mr. Wendorf, and Mr. Fehrm are the Mr. Fixits at D-DHS. They keep the school and grounds clean and in excellent shape. Mr. James Christianson was employed as the Building and Grounds Supervisor. This was the first year that this system was used. He is in charge of all maintenance and all the school equipment. Mr. Christianson is also a member of the faculty, teaching engineering drawing. 10 Carolyn Boviall, Jean Lenz, and Jeanette Yungerman are in the lunch line. Familiar to the students at D-DHS are Miss Zitko and Mrs. Peters, the office secretaries. Some of their duties are selling lunch tickets, answering the telephone, filing, typing, making announcements, and assisting students and teachers. The school accountant and school sec -retary are in the superintendent's office. They are Mrs. Knight, Board of Education secretary, and Mrs. Vaughn, the accountant. 11 Mrs. Kathleen Knight and Mrs. Anne Vaughn arc at work in their office at 412 Walworth Avenue. Miss Diane Zitko and Mr. John Peters, the school sec retaries, in the school office. There was a time to study a time to have fun. There was a time to come now it's time to say good-bye. There was a time to be happy now a time to be sad. There was a time . . . SENIORS You came here four years ago and now you're going to leave. You say the time went fast. You're worried that you didn't v have enough time to accomplish what you set out to do. But don't worry, you've left your mark on the school. A mark in sports, activities, classes, and leadership. Marks that won't soon be forgotten. Yes, you can be proud to say, I was a member of the class of '64. Always Remember This Time 43 There's a time to improve a time to stay the same. There's a time to play a time to work. There's a time for fun a time to be serious. There’s a time for satisfaction a time for frustration. There’s a time . . . UNDERCLASSMEN You're on the last leg of your public school years. You have to make the most of them. There's time for everything, its true, but remember time goes so fast. It's up to you to uphold the traditions of your school. It's up to you to prove that your class is just as good, if not better, than those that have gone before you. Set your goals now and strive to attain them, so that you can look back and say, with a feeling of satisfaction, I've done my best and am proud of my accomplishments! We Worked Toward Mary Austin demonstrates diligent study, part of the juniors preparation for the future. Jcancne Thomas, as well as several other juniors, participated in student teacher day. In preparing for the future, the juniors studied diligently and made plans for college. They displayed their concern for the future as many of them took the Prelimenary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) on October 19 . The highlights of the year were the junior prom, held on May 1, and the4 choosing of class rings. Leading the class this year were John Benson, president; Judie Werbel, vice president; Robin York, secretary; and Betty Ann Beresh, treasurer. Escorted by John McLernon, Betty Ann also represented the junior class on the homecoming court this year. The juniors received second place for their homecoming float, ''We'll Record a Victory. A Time for Songs to Be Heard This years' choruses were very active, following their busy schedules. They participated in such activities as a hootenanny, a program in the Borg Memorial Stadium, the Christmas concert, and a visit to the Chicago Civic Opera House. Inanewand different way of performing modem music, the D-DHS choruses presented a hootenanny. The scene was very casual in which the choruses sat on or stood around bales of starw on the stage. Highlights of the performance were numbers sung by soloists: Sue Seuser, Barb Hitzeman, Mieko Banno, and Jennie Schmid. Also performing special numbers were the Madrigal and a folk singing trio, the Voyagers, consisting of Bob Hankins, Paul Matson, and Phil Sheahan. A program entitled A Salute to Briga-doon, was performed by the choruses during the half-time of a football game in the Borg Memorial Stadium. Despite the cold football weather, the program was well presented with much enthusiasm. The Christmas mood was well displayed at the Christmas concert at which the various choir groups participated as well at the D-DHS band. This years' concert was presented with special emphasis on the religious aspects of Christmas. A visit to the Chicago Civic Opera House to attend the performance of Camelot” was also part of the choruses' busy schedule. The annual trip lends much enjoyment to the choir groups and is looked forward to every season. 83 MIXED CHOIR, FRONT ROW: Rita Stangler, Kathy Robinson, Jackie McCartie, Karen Jacobs, Lynn Anderson, Becky Newton, Erin O'Conner, Judy Schultz, FrancesBartclt;SECOND ROW: Cindy Newman, Pam Nostrant, Sandy DuCharme, Mieko Ban-no, Cladys Moore, Ellen Seising, Ronald Stonewall, Rosanne Ruffalo, Ruth Egnoski, Jane LeRette; BACK ROW: Debbie Britt, Cladys Coleman, Joan Ostrum, Sandy Brewer, John Williams, Loretta Michols, Susan Garecht, Linda Buhler, Lois Kelly, Lonnie Teubert. This year the music department put on a lively, fun-filled musical, called Tinian's Rainbow. FinianMclonergan, an Irish immigrant, played by Phil Shea-han, and his daughter Sharon McLoner-gan, portrayed by Jennie Schmid, came to Rainbow Valley, filled with the hopes and dreams which all immigrants have when they arrive in America. Here they were going to start a new life, but before leaving Ireland, Finian stole a leprechaun’s crock of gold. He planned on planting it in the ground and wishing on it whenever he wanted a dream to be fulfilled. Og, played by Jerry Stafford, followed Finian to America to get the crock of gold back because without it leprechauns would have no magic powers. 120 Jennie Schmid sang the Idle Rich as the cast displayed their wealth. “Finian’s Rainbow” At the right: Og, played by Jerry Stafford, is presenting his name card to Finian, played by Phil Sheahan. This had to be returned before a mortal had wished on it three times or it would lose its magic power. Sharon met Woody played, by Bob Hankins, and they fell in love. Og had quite a time convincing Finian to return the crock of gold. However everything turned out all right and Misstucky was the place where many dreams were fulfilled. There were approximately 120 members included in the cast and crews of the musical. The musical took place on April 10 and 11. The hard work and long hours of rehearsal paid off for the musical was performed before full houses both nights. 121 “The Perfect Idiot” Bob O'Brien, John Byrnes, Peter Johnson, Paul Vidas, Sue Anderson, Jody Walters,Phil Kilkenny, and Alice Winn from a scene in the all school play. The male lead was played by Bob O'Brien and the female lead played by Sue Anderson. The cast also consisted of thirteen other members. The play was under the direction of Mr. Wallace Haskins. Because this was Mr. Haskins last year of teaching at D-DHS, this was the last play which he directed at this school. The play tells the story of a very brilliant high school student, by the name of Dan, who lacks friends. With the help of his brother, who is popular and well liked, Dan is able to gain friends and go to college. The comedy of it all is brought out in the way Dan tries to get to college. 122 Debate Hosts District Contest SEATED: Linda Case, Sue Wilson, Linda Schirer, Jennifer Johnson. The Varsity Cheerleaders for the 1963-64 school year have given a large contribution to the school spirit and backing of our athletic teams. The cheerleaders were elected during the spring of the 1963 school year. The girls elected were Sue Anderson, Pat Benson, Doris Glazik, Lillian Hipp, Mary Kenney, and Robin York. Carolyn Kohn was elected as substitute. Mary Kenney was chosen by the girls as their captain. The cheerleaders attended cheer-leading camp last summer and brought back many ideas for their cheers. They also purchased megaphones for the squad. Their enthusiasm and pep was exhibited not only at the games, but also in pep assemblies at which they put on skits to arouse the student body to attend the games and participate in backing their team. 124 This year's junior varsity cheerleading squad was chosen at the beginning of the 1963-64 school year. The girls were judged by members of the faculty. The girls chosen were Marcia Aiello, Laurie Byrnes, Sandy Ducharme, Lisi Lagg, Joanne McDonough, and Barb Sheean. Learning Citizenship The juniors shown above are those D-DHS students chosen by the faculty members to represent the school at the Badger Boys' and Badger Girls’ State program this summer. The program is during the week of June 13-20. These students are sponsored by the Delavan and Darien Posts of the American Legion, the Lions Club, Rotary Club and Legion Auxi liar ies. The boys will live on the Ripon College campus in Ripon, and the girls will stay at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. The purpose of this activity is to gain knowledge of the fundamental principles of our American government by actual experiences in government offices at the city, county, and state levels. These experiences will come about through the use of mythical cities and counties. The boys and girls will run for offices and then actually perform the jobs they have been elected to. In this way it is hoped that all the delegates will gain knowledge in the way that the governments they live under operate, and will make better citizens. 127 % There's a time to play a time to watch. TheJV's finished with an impressive 6 and 1 record. Their success was, for the most part, overshadowed by the undefeated varsity champions. Cage Squad Loses Many Close Ones In the more recent past it has almost become tradition that basketball be our frustration season. Not that our caliber of play is lower than the rest of the conference, but rather that when we win, we win big, and when we lose, the score is more often than not extremely close. A good example of this was; in a string of five games, D-DHS lost four of them by a total of 16 points, including one in overtime to a powerful Elkhorn squad, while winning one by 36 points. The 1963-64 Comet eagers under the direction of Coach Carl Larson were without a doubt an exciting team to watch. There were always five scrapping ball players representing D-DHS on the courts. They were, however, short in comparison to other conference unusually tall teams. After downing the sub-regional favorites, Badger, 60-52, the Comets bowed out of the state tournament trail and the season rather appropriately by losing to Salem Central by a single point, 58-57, in overtime. Also bowing out of high school basketball in that game were seniors John Byrnes, Ted Kozlowski, Pat Hayes, Gary Wuhrman, and Phil Kilkenny. 136 At right Senior John Byrnes gets off a jump shot over the outstretched hands of John Wart man, Elkhorn's 6’5 center. John Hetzel, another junior, number 35, awaits a possible rebound. Below, Flahive begins to go up fora reverse layup during the game with Badger. Senior Phil Kilkenny, number 45, stands ready for the rebound. 137 Although the Comets had no chance for the conference championship after the first round of competition in the Southern Lakes Conference, they still battled second place teams like Elkhorn, pictured here, right down to the final buzzer. The . . . Delavan vs. Elkhorn The Cornets fought the Elks to a draw for four quarters of basketball, only to lose in the overtime period 57-53. Even though the Comets were outsized by about three inches in height man for man, they still managed to grab their share of the rebounds. Junior Varsity and For the past few years the Comet Junior Varsity has been among the best in the conference. According to Coach Tom Scharfenberg, this year was no exception despite a losing record of 8 wins and 10 losses. Three big reasons for this were the loss of three ofthe JV'stop players. Brad Brown, the teams leading scorer at the time was called up to the varsity, Larry Waterstreet, a little court general, with 47 assists in 10 games moved away, and Bruce Stickney, who ended up as leading scorer, was sidelined with an ankle injury. The 1963-64 JV's capability was more accurately shown early in the season as they lost only 2 of their first 8 games. John Brynes shoots a jump shot in a varsity game at left. 140 Freshmen Build Varsity Coach Bart Walsh's D-DHS Freshman team had their troubles this year in posting a 2-6 record. The high spots in the season came as the Frosh Comets whipped Whitewater 59-39, and again 44, 26. Rick Hagan led all frosh scorers with 56 points. Wally Fleming held down second place with 45 points, while Tom McDonough and Earl Kolin were tied for third place honors each with 44 points. These scoring leaders along with Jim Anderson, Jim Clutter, Mike Muzzy, and Chuch Spitz should give the JV’s a good nucleus next year. Those who won letters were seniors Grair, Johnson, Gary DuCharme, Paul Matson, Dale Scharine, and Al Bartovies. Junior lettermen were Mestan, Thornton, Koerner, Brian Buzzell, Darryl Christianson, and Dave Stebnitz. Two Sophomores, Paul Vidas and Dave Norton also earned letters. D-DHS Wins Conference Baseball Trophy One of the strongest baseball squads in D-DHS history swept the Southern Lakes Conference race while winning seven of eight games. Their only defeat came at the hands of Elkhorn, who, behind a superb pitching performance, downed the Comets 1-0. In state tournament play the Comets were eliminated 3-2 by Cooney High of Oconomowoc. In a game with East Troy on the Comet's diamond, junior first baseman Bill Yazbec became the only player, as far as anyone can recall, to hit a ball over the cyclone fence into the stadium grounds. The consistent hitting of Mike Micha-lek, Tom Madison, Gary DuCharme, Dan McLernon, Jim Greene, and sophomore Jim Michalek, and pitching from southpaw Jim Nostrant, righthanders, Dan McLernon and sophomore Brad Brown, combined with unusual team spirit and fine coaching to bring the Southern Lakes Championship trophy to D-DHS.
