1962 ERA Delavan-Darien High School, Delavan, Wisconsin Volume V KATHE LAUTERBACH - EDITOR FOREWORD This year we are very happy to have Freddie, our school mascot, introduce the 1962 Era. Freddie came into being last year when the cheerleaders and members of the football squad felt the need for a school mascot. It certainly was a wise decision, for Freddie has come to symbolize the tremendous school spirit which follows our team wherever they might be. Along with building up the spirit, Freddie has helped to make posters and present clever skits at pep meetings which have certainly been a great factor in cheering our teams to victory. Because we believe that school spirit extends beyond the phase of athletics, we feel justified in having Freddie introduce the various sections of the Era . TO OUR ALMA MATER, SHALL WE ALL BE TRUE, EVER WE PRAISE THE GOLD AND BLUE. HAIL TO THE VARSITY, HAIL TO VICTORY, HAIL ALMA MATER, HAIL ALL HAIL TO THEE. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION................... 4 SENIORS......................... 10 UNDERCLASSMEN....................42 ACTIVITIES...................... 60 ATHLETICS.......................102 FACULTY.........................122 SNAPS 128 STUDENT INDEX...................129 3 BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. DONALD BEARDSLEY . . . clerk on the school board, has held this position for six years. We juniors have been busy. As freshmen we sponsored the Valentine's dance, and as sophomores we had the Christmas dance. Now we are sponsoring the From with the theme Blue Hawaii. Our float this year, Pull Men For Victory” took a second place, not quite good enough as our previous freshman and sophomore floats which both came in first. Along with Homecoming festivities, Sandy Deschner, and Mike Roherty were junior representatives. To supervise at class meetings, our advisors Mr. Huber and Mr. Scharfenberg were there. All in all the juniors have led a pretty exciting year, and getting their class rings will always remind them of their ’’good old junior year. 42 FRONT ROW: Margaret Boutcllc, Jean Ann Bradford, Dennis Batchlet, Mice Anderson, Elizabeth Canady. The festivities began as the queen candidates, chosen by the senior class, and the underclassman representatives, chosen by their respective classes, were introduced at an assembly on September 27, 1961. They are pictured on the next page. Friday afternoon, September 29, 1961, school was dismissed early so that everyone could attend the parade. Many floats were entered. The sophomore class and the FFA floats took the first prizes. The Homecoming game was a victory. But, due to rain, the crowning of the queen was postponed until Saturday night at the dance, Autumn Rendezvous sponsored by the senior class. 60 FRONT: Connie Rutherford, Joan Langnes, Jo Ann VanAcker, Louise Kaiser. The Girls’ Athletic Association is nothing new to D-DHS. Organizations similar to our present GAA were in existence in both the Delavan and Darien High Schools prior to the formation of the Delavan-Darien High School District. This organization is open to any girl in the high school who wishes to participate in extracurricular sports activities. By taking part in these activities, any girl may gain valuable experience in practicing good sportsmanship and sharing while she is developing her athletic skills. The sports during the 1961-62 GAA season are softball, basketball, volleyball, swimming, archery, and golf. During the course of the year, the following girls, greatly aided by Mrs. Ber-kompas, have led the GAA in many varied activities: Rachel Wileman, president; Rita Westerberg, vice president; Rita Curry, secretary; and Connie Rutherford, treasurer. These activities mentioned include an inter-school play night, a sports' night, a school mixer, inter-class sports tournaments, and the annual GAA Father-Daughter Banquet. It is hoped that the Girls’ Athletic Association will continue to serve D-DHS in the future by developing a competitive and cooperative spirit among its female students. 63 Officers of GAA pictured above are Connie Rutherford, treasurer; Rachel Wilcman, president; Rita Curry, secretary; and Rita Westerberg, vice president. 64 VARSITY CLUB FRONT ROW: Paul Shimkus, Dan Gibson, Steve Spoerle, Allen Williams, Ron Grair, Gordon Hirsch, Bob Ludo-wise, Bob Winkley, Jerry Glieter. The Delavan-Darien Varsity Club has made an outstanding place for itself in service to our school and student body. Each year since its beginning in 1959, the club has raised the money to buy pins for seniors who have earned six or more major letters in sports. In I960 the club voted to support the J. Arthur Moran award given annually to an outstanding senior boy. Last year Mike Hayes was the recipient of this award. They also assist with athletic functions and have a great deal to do with promoting school spirit. 65 FIGHT TEAM FIGHT!! The Catalinas were organized in 1959. In the past years they have presented South Pacific, Eloise in Manhattan, and this year's production is Alice in Waterland. The purpose of this organization is to let girls express themselves in an aquatic medium. With music to set the mood, creativeness is done through various strokes and stunts. Only through a great deal of practice can this be achieved. Also they want to entertain and let people know that there's more to swimming than just paddling around. To become a member a girl must try out in early fall and prove her ability to do many difficult stunts. The freshman and sophomore captains were Tom Benson, Tom Holden, Dale Scharine, Phil Sheahan, Fred Bull, and Ronald Deschner. The junior and senior captains were Bill Blakely, Alan Wilson, Ron Henriott, Gary Wheeler, Larry Schultz and Bob Smith. There are six freshman and sophomore teams and six junior and senior teams. They met every Monday for twelve weeks and competed with each other. The purpose of intramurals is to provide both fun and fair competition for boys who enjoy basketball and to teach fair play and self control. Boys' bowling was so successful this year that it continued into the second semester. There were six teams each semester. The boys met at Evan’s Bowl on Tuesday nights for approximately twelve weeks. The adviser to boys’ bowling is Mr. Meisner. Girls' bowling is advised by Miss Kilkelly. Junior and senior bowling met on Monday nights at Evan’s. The final team standings for the juniors and seniors were first Rita Wester berg, second Dodie Dutton, third Diane Zitko. Bev Byrne led the teams with a high game of 173. The freshmen and sophomores met on Wednesday nights at The Dela-vana. Their final team standings were first Sheila Fleming, second Susie Krabbe, third Paula Nelson. Sandra Wright and Paula Nelson led the sophomores with high individual scores of 141. 69 FORENSICS FRONT ROW: Robert Bet2er, Judic Werbel, Carolyn Faytlc, Jennie Schmid, Carolyn Kohn, Jeanne Boviall. Membership has been set on a point system with ten points necessary for membership. Points are earned by participating in school plays, musicals, and Forensics. They are Rachel Wileman, vice president; Kathleen Skopec, president; Mr. Scott, adviser; Barbara Byrnes, secretary; and Judith Danielson, treasurer. The Student Council shall seek to promote a high quality of school spirit in all school activities, provide practical training in democratic government, promote harmonious relationship between students and faculty, serve as a clearing house for solving school problems, and encourage activities for the general welfare of the school. These words, taken from the Delavan-Darien High School Student Council Constitution, clearly state the functions of this student governing body. This year the Student Council has strived to carry out these functions satisfactorily through the operation of the canteen, supervision of class elections, supporting the American Field Service through ice-cream sales and Penny Wednesday, sponrosing school assemblies, and promoting school spirit by sponsoring buses to sport activities. The council has sought to represent the student body as fairly as possible by discussing the views of students outside the council rather than the beliefs of die members themselves. 74 COUNCIL Left to Right, SITTING: Judith Elstad, Rita Curry, Barbara Woods, Janet Koepnick, Joan Langnes, Doris DcLap, Virginia Stewart. Karamatsu, one of the Northern Alps of central Japan, with my brothers and some of their friends. Although this was a wonderful experience, it was only one of the events of a thrill-packed summer in Japan for AFS'cr Bill Moyle. Bill spent ten weeks in Tsujido, Japan, which is about thirty miles south of Tokyo. He lived with a Japanese family, learned their customs, and enough of their language to get along outside of his home. When asked to comment on the Japanese people Bill says, They are extremely polite and sincere. Their politeness often seems conventional and customary, but it never lacks warmth. AFS On December 29, 1960, Murry Nelson left Del avail for the west coast, then he was off to New Zealand. He is the first student from D-DHS to participate in the AFS school program. Murray made his home in Plimmer-ton, New Zealand, which is about eighteen miles north of Wellington. Bob Stewart, the first AFS student to come to D-DHS is from Wellington, so he and Murray saw one another occasionally while Murray was in New Zealand. Murray attended the Mana College and studied math, chemistry, Latin, English, and European History. One thing that Murray found quite interesting about New Zealand is the continuing British influence, from the government right down to the mannerisms of the people. By August 27, 1961, Murray was back home with the experience of a life-time behind him. From San Juan, Argentina, to D-DHS came Alberto Bar chi Ion, one of our three foreign exchange students. When asked what is important about Argentina, Alberto smiles and replies, everything. When he returns home, A1 plans to finish high school and study engineering. To our friend from south of the border, we say, It's been great having you at D-DHS. ALL YE PEOPLES OF THE EARTH; Filiz Saltug came to D-DHS in August, 1961, from Ismir, Turkey, where she studied at the American College Institute. Her country's history, of which Filiz is very proud, is a t3le of violence and romance, and of heroes and villians. Turkey is no longer a country of men wearing red fezzes and mysterious women veiled to the eyes. All this has been replaced by a modern nation with many western ideas. Here in the U.S., Filiz found our skyscrapers, big supermarkets, and Christmas activities most interesting. All of us hope that Filiz has enjoyed her stay here as much as we have enjoyed having her. THEN. AND ONLY THEN, SHALL WE HAVE PEACE! Eduardo Littayc came to D-DHS in January when he transferred from Valparaiso High School in Indiana. Ed is a native of Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, a country in Southeast Asia. Ed speaks four languages: French, Cambodian, Vietnamese, and English. Upon returning home, he plans to study political science. We hope that Ed's visit to America has been a profitable one and will help further understanding between his people and ours. Rehearsing on their own time, the Madrigal singers performed in the fall concert Sounds of America, honoring Delavan's 125th Anniversary, and at the Songs of Christmas program in December. They also participated in the A.F.S. Folk Festival held in our school in October. 78 MIXED CHORUS FRONT ROW: Bonnie Reinkc, Joan Ostron, Phyllis Dantone, Maria Calgano, Brian Buzzcll, Tlieressa Owens, Carolyn Kohn, Jane Priem, Jane Sikes, Shelia Beyritz. Since 1959 when Mr. Bell organized the a cappella choir, it has generally been considered the elite of the vocal music groups in D-DHS. This group has been limited to a relatively small and select number of students in order that it might be able to present the most challenging selections in choral music with maximum precision. Singing unaccompanied under die skillful direction of Mr. Bell, the a cappella choir never fails to impress a concert audience. Judy Danielson, Rita Curry, Bill Moyle and Phil Lind-loff are the officers of the a cappella group. 80 GIRLS’ CHORUS FRONT ROW: Janet Logterman, Karen Veley, Kathy DuCharme, Kathy Robinson, Becky Newton, Erin O'Conner, Judy Bigelow, Mary' Lou Allen, Rosanne Ruffalo, Jenny Thompson. Since 1958 it has been considered a half credit course and meets five periods a week during the school day. Along with the other choirs the Girls’ Chorus participates in three concerts annually. It was formed with the basic idea of introducing students to beginning theory, harmony, and three part vocal music. 01 STRIKE UP THE BAND Band officers and representatives from left are Tom Holden, Ed Boutellc, Murray Nelson, Bill Wagner, Rachel Wileman and Gary Burghoff at piano. Early in October Mr. Robert Spevacek, D-DHS Band Director, was called to active duty with the 32nd National Guard Division. The National Honor Society is a school organization for outstanding students in grades ten, eleven, and twelve. Founded in 1921 by members of the National Association of Secondary-School Principals, its purpose is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in high school students. While the society's primary function is to recognize excellence in scholarship, the members do engage in some activities. This year’s activities include holding a Christmas Tea for the faculty and alumni enrolled in college, sponsoring an all-school variety show, and attending a spring banquet. Honor Society members also usher for all school-related programs and the club receives payment for this. Election to membership in the National Honor Society is a distinct achievement for any D-DHS student. 87 SEATED: Ida Creidanus, Dorothy Dutton, Barbara Byrnes, Kathe Lauterbach, Patricia Laney, Arlene Los, Cynthia Kilkenny. These pictures were free to the school based on the percentage of the seniors who purchased class pictures from each photographer. The Delavan Enterprise and the Janesville Gazette provided some sports pictures. The staff wishes to thank these photographers for their services to the staff. We would also like to extend our thanks and appreciation to the faculty for helping in so many ways toward the publication of the ERA. 132
