COMETS END SUCCESSFUL SEASON Practice session -s. a j a 7r. m f lk. mr: wRBb Whitewater game Although it is always heartbreaking to be so close and yet so far from the championship in any sport, we must say that this football season has been a successful one for the Comets. Our 5 1-1 record placed us third in the conference behind Badger and Whitewater who were tied with 6-1 records. The worst break of the season came in the Whitewater game when Bob Greene suffered a dislocated hip. Although he played only 5 quarters. he was the Comets fourth highest ground gainer and third highest scorer. Junior Bill Moyle led the team on the two most important departments, scoring and rushing. Bill scored 62 points on ten touchdowns and two extra points and was followed by Dick Wer-bel with 18 points and Bill Wagner and Greene with twelve each. Moyle carried the burden of our running attack: all the rest of the Comets combined the ball 144 times and Bill carried 142 times and gained 667 yards. Wagner. Werbel, Greene, and Joe Bell followed in rushing. Captain Mike Hayes was the leading pass receiver with six catches for 155 yards and one touchdown. He was followed by George Woodard and Chuck Anderson. It became obvious that much of the heroics of the season took place in the line when Lon Liddlc and Ron Holsman were elected All-Conference. Other stalwarts in the line all year were Jim O'Donnell, Wayne Brown, Verylc Bridges, and Keith Klawes. Our defense line, which did very well most of the year, was anchored by O'Donnell, Holsman. Liddle, and Woodard. Hayes and Werbel were the linebackers and after trying many boys, Darrell Stickney stood out as the most adequate middle guard. The defensive secondary consisted of Bell. Phil Lindloff, Wagner, and Moyle. The defense was helped many times by Klawes. Anderson. Phil Vinci, and Paul Shimkus. By Larry Johnson — 20 —
