Few of us realize how much the Board of Education has done. For the past three years they have averaged two meetings a week, and many Sunday afternoons have been spent visiting other schools. These visits and hours of planning have been largely responsible for this beautiful school. We owe much to them. Dorothy Severson and Mrs. Knight of the office staff look over papers in the school office. ADMINISTRATION 6 THE DOORS OPEN . . With the formal opening of our new Delavan-Darien High School we begin an era unsurpassed for educational opportunities in the communities which it serves. Although building and name are both new, we are fortunate to inherit the rich traditions of the schools which have united to make it possible. We, the students of the DeIavan-Darien High School, wish to take this opportunity to thank our parents, teachers and friends, all of whom have contributed in some fashion to make this beautiful school a reality. We shall try to prove worthy of their confidence in us. 7 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS RALPH LEWIS FREITAG “Tags” A slap happy fellow, the affectionate kind, but to every poor lass, he feeds the same line. The class of 1958 is holding its twentieth class reunion on the planet Jupiter in outer space. Transportation has been furnished by Ralph Freitag Ond his fleet of privately owned rocket-mobiles. Nona Boutelle, Marge Gransee and Marilyn Holden are on the refreshment committee. The food will be out of this world. As we leave Ralph's ship we find ourselves at the luxurious home of Jerry Miller in the mountains of Jupiter. Can you imagine meeting Pete Van Dyken, Albert Johnson and Owen Peters? Pete is president of the school board, Albert is principal, and Owen teaches a class in jive talk to the Jupiter children. I wonder how they persuaded Sandra Beyritz and Mildred Stardy to join the faculty as geography teachers? (Space geography). Of course Jean Williams teaches Spanish there. Jill Littlefield, who teaches music, talked her into it. Do you remember Tom Bates? He has a dentist's office with all the latest push button equipment and Carol Luciani as his receptionist. Work certainly gets done around there. When we took our last trip to Jupiter we met Mr. anc Mrs. Bernie Van Acker (Pat McLernon). They're soon going to hear the patter of tiny feet, because Judy 30 CLASS PROPHECY Bahr's dog had puppies and she's going to give them one. Those Jupiter puppies are cute — each muttnik has three tails. We were surprised to see Arnie Moser and Paul Brahm owning their own gas station which sells only high octane helium. Dan Sargent married Kay Bamford and settled down in Jupiter. He's editor of Jupiter Horror Stories. His best writer is Pat Tully, of course, and what an imagination that boy hasl Oh, those Martion nrp wild, but Bev McQuality and Carol Zitko (with Carol Stangler's help) manage to tame them. They run a beauty shop. Turning on our space radio, we were surprised to hear that Jack Hansen had his own broadcasting station. He was featuring Carol Nauseda, Carol Leve and Joan Oleston in the latest Jupiter jazz. It sounds quite different from what we were used to hearing in the old days around Delavan-Darien High. Everyone was raving about Arlene Baldwin's, Lillian Behrens' and Mary Boviall’s latest space outfits. They were designed by June McGee and Kathy Sliker, Who operate one of the most exclusive shops on the planet. Pat Veley was practicing on her cornet the other day and hit such a blue note that all the Martians came tumbling out, crying, Where's the fire? Bill Lauterbach has the shoe shop on Jupiter; h's shoes are 0,1 “ -propelling. Oh, how the ladies 31 CLASS PROPHECY on Jupiter love him! But he's still a bachelor. Mike Skopec and Jim Jonuska manage a baseball league with Lauterbach'sself-propelled shoes. They really OWN the game. As we passed Terry Berkompas we heard him trying to persuade Gert Huber, Corky Sherman and Jerry Ladwig to join him in a flight to the moon in his souped-up space ship. Walking around a corner, we were startled to hear a gasp from Ron Olsen and Bob Stewart, who were receiving first aid treatment from Carol Wangerin and Brenda Bruce. The trip was just too much for them. Gene Reeb was attempting to liven up the party by trying to make Kathy Kilkenny disappear, but knowing Kathy, we just knew she wouldn't. Jim Baun, Richard Bonsai I and Ted Greidanus were amazed to see how the Jupiter inhabitants used Atomic Energy in their farming. Ted tried out one of the atomic plows, but it got out of control and landed him on Neptune. Hearing this, Cathy Dabrowlski, Dorothy Michaelson, Carol Stuver and Donna Heller sent a telegram saying they were unable to come because they felt much safer on earth. Donna Bradford and Betty Brown are music teachers here and get wonderful results with these space children, who all have three mouths. 32 CLASS PROPHECY PHiI Strong has been hired by the Moon Development Realty Co. to design all the advertising for the sales campaign to sell pre-fab houses in the lunar craters. Tom Connelly is making the posters. Would you believe it? Bob McSweeney has become one of the most famous orators in the solar system. Last week he delivered a three hour speech to the Martian Ladies Aid entitled: Silence is Golden. Ann Curry, President of the Martian Ladies, listened quietly (well, almost) and then remarked: What did you say? Clarice Logterman has written a novel and Bernice Wilkins is editing the Jupiter Star. Karl Keyzer and Diane Wenzel won the waltz contest sponsored by Jupiter Junior Chamber of Commerce. Diane's prize was a new typewriter and Karl's was a complete set of the works of James Fenimore Cooper. Having gathered up all the news of our classmates, we strolled over to Mr. and Mrs. Terry Yirek's drug store (you remember Diane Kucker?). Conrad Edwards is working for them, and he served us with a super three-dimensional soda. After this we returned to earth. 33 SENIORS AS SMALL FRY. . . Starting the school year with a new band, we also had many shiny new instruments, complete new uniforms (with a shield of our own design), and the finest band room in this area. The built-in risers enable everyone to see the director at all times. The four soundproof practice rooms are excellent for private practicing. There are also two large rooms for uniforms and instruments. On December 6, Erlan Bliss, Ann Curry, Jerry Ladwig, Bill Lauterbach, Jill Littlefield, and Jean Williams attended a sight-reading clinic at Beloit College and had the interesting experience of playing under the direction of Lucien Cailliet, the arranger of the musical score for the recent film, The Ten Commandments . Being host to the 110 piece Massed Band from 14 schools on January 27 was one of the highlights of our year. The guest conductor was Mr. Paul Anderson, from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. But although the team was picked for close to the cellar, this didn't discourage the boys' incentive to win. They turned in an impressive 5 and 3 record, each loss a heartbreaker which could have been—with a break here and there--a win instead of a defeat. Again Coaches Zimmermann and Edmunds turned out one of the best defensive teams in the Conference. The bulwarks of the line were Paul Brahm, Bob McSweeney, Tom Bates and Dan Sargent. Bill Ratzlaff directed the team from the quarterback position, with Fred Escher, Corky Sherman, and Jim ( The Cast) Jonuska turning in fine back-field jobs. Mike Skopec, left end, made many thrilling catches for valuable yardage. Bob McSweeney received honorable mention for All-Conference tackle. 76 In the East Troy game Sherman and Escher rallied a touchdown each, with big Fred Esc her toeing the extra points. In the Burlington game, the Comets rolled up 40 points in the first half, which proved enough for victory. 77 Fred Escher Vince Catalano Mike Skopec Coral Sherman Jim Jonuska Bill Ratzlaff Tom Bates Warren Lipps Paul Brahm Norm Teubert Dan Sargent Jerry Ladwig 79 Jonuska stopped after a ten yard gain in the homecoming game with Burlington. Leading the team to a 5-1 record were such stalwarts as Bob Greene, Joe Bell, Chuck Voss, Pete Betzer, Dick DeKalb and Ron Kruger in the backfield. By the passing combination of Green to Beresh many scoring threats were fulfilled. In the line Mike Hayes, Jim Bradford, Ken Heller, Wayne Brown, Keith Klawes, Jim Borg, Bill Mannaberg and Steve Mestan sparked the offensive and defensive units. Owing to the flu epidemic during football season, the ERA was unable to do photographic justice to the many promising B Squad players. 83 Varsity Basketball TOP ROW; Bill Larson, Jerry Ladwig, Fred Escher, Ed Siert, Larry Spitz, Jon Goff, Fred Wileman, Coach, Don Breidcnbach. The surprise of the sport's year came when the Delavan-Darien Comets stepped on to the basketball court. Picked for the cellar of the conference, they proceeded to prove everyone wrong. Getting off to a slow start, the Comets then enjoyed a 12-6 overall season's record. Jim Jonuska, who came into the season late because of a football injury, proved so valuable to the Comets that he was elected by his teammates the most valuable player and was nominated to the All Conference Team. Mike Skopec took the scoring honors of the team and played excellent all-around ball throughout the season. Bill Lauterbach, with his fine ball handling and keen shooting eye, sparked the team to its string of victories. Ralph Frietag, elected honorary captain by his teammates and Jerry Ladwig, were responsible for most of the rebounding throughout the year. The Comets had such a successful season through the superb effort of Coach Don Briedenboch that he wos elected Coach of the Year by the sportswriters of Southern Wisconsin. 84 Our Coach and Team At Work A Victory! Due to lack of experience and practicing facilities al the beginning of the season, the team got off to a slow start. For the first half of the season the team had to travel to Darien for their practices. Practicing on a court much smaller than regulation size, the team found it difficult to adjust itself to the larger size courts. The team lost their first five games and then came back to win four of the next six. During the remainder of the season the team improved steadily, loosing only two games in an overtime another by two points. Leoding the team in rebounding were Dick Olson and Mike Hayes. The leading scorer was Chuck Voss, closely followed by Dick Olson. Some fine playmaking and scoring was turned in by Vince Catalano, Butch Danielson, Ron Deschner Pete Betzer. Sparking the team on defense was Denny Rammien. Dick Dekalb, Tom Theobald; Jeff Roth turned in fine all-around play. Christchurch, New Zealand. From far-away New Zealand comes exchange student Bob Stewart—once a stranger, now our good friend. Bob, who is 18, attended school in Christchurch. During holidays he lives with his family on a 1000 acre ranch in the senic North Island. An excellent student, he plans to study psychology and sociology at the University of New Zealand when he returns home. Among Bob's hobbies are photography and music. He is also a capable writer, having had an article published in The Voice of Youth column of the Chicago Tribune. He has done fine work on the Union Times and Era staffs. Through Bob—and the American Field Service which sponsors exchange students—we have learned first-hand what international friendship can mean. To us who know him well. New Zealand will no longer be merely a distant country; it will always be vivid with memories of his warm and friendly personality. This year has been a tremendous one for me. It has given me an understanding of how other people live which 1 know will enrich my life. Many people gave much that I might come; my mother, the Carl Bliss family, and the A.F.S. Committee, as well as community organizations. J3W 108 ROGER B. ARNOLD B.S. Milton College M.S. University of Wisconsin Band WINIFRED BOBOLZ B.S. Stout Home Economics JAMES A. CHRISTIANSON B.S.
