THE 1956 Published by the Students cd’ ' DARIEN HIGH SCHOOL Darien, Wisconsin FOREWORD Another year is drawing to a close, a year alike and yet so different from all others. Another copy of the Eagle will take its place on the shelf with those of preceding years. For many years the Eagle has recorded the events at Darien High School and has become a treasured keepsake for each departing senior as well as the year's record for the underclassmen. In this years Eagle we've tried to give a complete record of Darien High School and the graduating class of 1956. As you thumb through the pages of the book you will notice the large number of pupils who have participated in the making of it- also the great number who have taken part in the activities. After graduation many will leave Darien, but the lessons and experiences they have learned will go with them and we hope the activities pictured in this book will always remain in their memory. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS Dedication........................................4 Administration and Faculty........................5 Seniors...........................................9 Underclassmen....................................IS Sports...........................................22 Activities.......................................34 Grades...........................................31 Advertising......................................S3 3 DEDICATION This 1956 Eagle is respectfully dedicated to Miss Margaret Christie, who retired from teaching last year after forty eightyears of service, guidance and friendship to the younger children in and around Darien. A native of the Darien community, she attended school at Fairfield, Darien and Whitewater State College. She has taught school at Fairfield, Summerville and Darien. It was at Darien that she spent many years helping youngsters with their lessons, their clothes when it was cold and giving them stars when they could count up to one hundred. Miss Christie is still active in such community organizations as Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution, Ilamarada and the Ladies Industrial Society. It is with many warm memories that we all remember Miss Christie. ADMINISTRATION Principal MR. LAWRENCE F. COX Science School Board MR. WALTER LARSON MR. WILLARD LOCK MR. It is made up of four officers and representatives from each class and club. Janet Zwieg, Barbara Thiele, Ruby Meyer, Bonnie Boltz, Dale Beardsley, Bonnie Lange, Bill Larson and Bob Anderson attended a county meeting in Whitewater on October 26th. Darien led a discussion on student council projects and their authority. They also attended other discussions at the conference. They were to get new ideas on how to better the student council. A representative from the Welfare Department spoke on the youth survey which is being made throughout the county. She asked us to nominate representatives who would like to work along with the adults on this survey. Each school was to nominate one person to work on each of the eleven committees. This year the student council again directed the homecoming activities. This included the parade, dance and half time activities. The student council conducted the magazine sale this year. The high school was divided into two groups, which tried to out-sell each other. The captainsof these two groups were Hardy Kroeze and Patsy Williams. The two teams brought in a profit of $270.65. The election of the A team cheerleaders was handled by the student council. A pep club wasorganized to arouse the interest of the students in helping to back our team. The pep commission was in charge of these activities. There are four other commissions: social, assembly, finance and noon hour. These commissions axe organized to help in the school program. In a setting of tropical palms and colored sunset, about forty couples danced to the music of Bud Wilbur's Orchestra. Many hours of labor were spent to transform the gym into a Tropical Paradise . Streamers of hanging moss in two shades of green were suspended from three sides of the gym to a central point in front of the stage then looped back to the rear of the stage. Murals showing tropical scenes, and representing a large part of the time spent in decorating, covered the walls. Potted palms completed the tropical setting. About 10:30 P.M. the cornation ceremony took place. Prom King Dick McCarthey crowned Janet Zwieg his queen and led the Grand March which followed. The court of honor consisted of Mary Ellen Merrill and Allen Austin, Janet Huisheere and Jerry Sheahan, Barbara Thiele and Don Conley, and Elaine Schryvers and David Peterson. Throughout the evening punch was served by Rosalie Redenius, Mary Geist and Donna Putman. The chaperones for the evening were Mr. and Mrs. Albert Zwieg, Mrs. Molly McCarthey and Mr. Hubert McCarthey. 17 JUNIOR CLASS Allen Austin Dale Beardsley David Cowell David Cox Eleanor Garber Mary Gcist Carol Hendrickson Janet Huisheere Paul Kalb Tom Krueger Glenn Kruizenga Bonnie Lange Donna Putman Jerry Scott Jerome Welch Delores Wheeler Beverley Wilkins Kenneth Williams Eugene Woodard Not Pictured: Delores Wescort, Larry Jacobson, Jerry Packard The Junior Class officers for this year are: Tom Krueger, Presi- dent; Larry Jacobson, Vice President; Carol Hendrickson, Secretary; Glenn Kruizenga, Treasurer; and Student Council Representative, Bonnie Lange. They now have a large amount of money, but they keep receiving more members which means they will need more money. This class is the largest class in high school this year. JUNIOR ACTIVITIES The Junior Class Play is called Teen Time.” It is the story of a young girl and her problems with her boy friends. Wendy isn't interested in Tim and his loud sweaters, carefree manner, and pickup truck any more because Harley has appeared and he lias beautiful manners and a yellow convertible. Tim tries to win Wendy back by helping her win a contest. Wendy does not appreciate his help because norespectable candidate for queen, campaigns. With the help of many other interesting characters this is a very humorous and interesting play. This picture is of the Juniors anxiously awaiting class. 19 SOPHOMORE CLASS Arlene Baldwin Mary Boviall Joanne Conley Donna Heller Beity Jacobs Ncllane Koele Clarice Logterman Mary Merrill Dorothy Michaelson Joan Oleston Rosalie Redenius Carol Stuver Patricia Veley Bemice Wilkins Officers President..................Betty Jacobs Vice President.............Joanne Conley Secretary...................Nellane Koele Treasurer...................Bernice Wilkins Representative..............Dorothy Michaelson Our class was organized this year with Mr. Prahl as advisor. The first action was to elect our class officers. Our class this year started with fourteen girls and one boy. Soon after school started the boy quit school to go into the navy. This left our class a completely girl class. Our float for the homecoming parade featured a locomotive about to run down an opposing playe r, thus We ’ll Run'em Down was our motto. Inspite of our efforts we only received third prize. During the year we sold greeting cards and stationery. We also had bake sales and card parties to enrich our class treasury. We hope to take a class trip before we enter the new school in our senior year. SECOND ROW: Coach Prahl, Bill Larson, Paul Kalb. David Cox, Jerome Welch, Paul Kempkin, Dale Beardsley, Tom Krueger. Jerry Scott. The test of character comes when the going is rough. At the close of Darien's roughest season. Coach Prahl and his team still hold the respect of the student body and the entire community. With only a small number of boys from which to prepare a team Mr. Prahl has carried on. The team has accepted defeat without griping and have always put up a good fight even when the odds were against them. Although Darien hasn't had a championship team in recent years there have been teams and players to be proud of. For example the 1954 football season, when Darien placed second in the conference, being beaten only by the champions. In the 1954-55 basketball season, Darien was proud of having the top scorer in the Southern Regional Conference. Although the scores of this season don't give credit to the hard work of Coach Prahl and his team, the squad showed, during each game, marked improvement and potential. Everyone is looking forward to next year and a team that we hope will have greater success. In any case it is more important to play the game fair and square than it is to win. Those who were selected were Danielle Duvall, Pat Rammien, Janet Zwieg, Eleanor Garber, and Eugene Woodard. These people attended the banquet at Walworth on September 15th 1955. The names of each schools cheerleaders were announced there. Darien was the only school there that had a boy cheerleader. After the group ate , Mrs. Stewart Honeck spoke to them on posture and appearance. The AM cheerleader's football cheering uniforms were gold corduroy slacks, blue and gold warm-up jackets and white bucks. They used blue and gold pompons to emphasize their cheers. Their basketball cheering uniforms were blue pleated skirts, white blouses, gold over blouses, and white bucks. The pep club elected cheerleaders before the beginning of the basketball season for the B squad. Those chosen were Pat Veley, Clarice Logterman, Carole Austin, and Dorothy Michaelson. The cheering uniforms they decided on were gold blouses, blue ties, blue skirts, and white bucks. Near the end of the basketball season Pat Rammien’s back was injured and Gene Woodard left the group. Pat Veley moved up to the A squad to take Pat Rammien's place. This meant hard work for both squads. The MB cheerleaders had to work out cheers for three people and the A cheerleaders had to teach Pat Veley all their cheers. Both cheerleading squads did a very fine job. They worked out exciting new ways to do old cheers, presented many new cheers, and made up cheers to fit different tunes. To keep up team spirit there was a pep session before every game. si CHEERLEADERS Left to right: Danielle Duvall. Janet Zwieg, Eugene Woodard, Pat Rammien. Eleanor Garber. A service bar is awarded for a years active participation in sport. The club has run concession stands at the games in order to make money for it's activities. In class we learn the fundamentals of journalism, which helps us in our annual and paper work. The purpose of the annual is to record, for memory, the activities of the past school year. The members of the staff have cooperated especially well this year, pitching in and helping our editor Janet Zwieg. As a reward for this hard working group we will have a banquet, 3s we have done in the past years. The students on the staff receive a journalism certificate for their first two years of service. The third year they receive a journalism pin. Those who complete their fourth year receive a guard. These certificates and pins are presented to the students at the annual banquet. The Darien school paper, The Eagle has participated in an exchange program this year. The school sends their papers out and receives others in return. The different schools that the Eagle exchanged with are Genoa City, Richmond, DcForest, Whitewater, Sharon. Capron, Palmyra. They also keep a record of the books that each student reads oo a special card. The fines of over due books are kept by the treasurer. The magazines which the school receives are checked in by the club members. They keep the shelves in order also. A special project for this year was cleaning out the card catalogue. All cards for books which were lost or removed from the library were discarded. When new books are received it is the duty of the members of the club to take care of them. 1 will give you an idea of the many things that have to be done to new books. First, they stamped with the school name in three places throughout the book. The summary from the book jacket, the book pocket, and date due slip are pasted in the book, and the pocket and the pocket card are filled out. A record is made of the book and it is classified. The classification is written on the back of the book. The last job is to make out a shelf card and the proper catalogue cards. The library club meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week to perform these duties.
