FOOTBALL Darien 12 - 0 College High Darien 16 - 0 Palmyra Darien 14 - 6 Capron Darien 45 - 2 Clinton Darien 14 - 30 Richmond Darien 52 - 26 Williams Bay Darien 56 - 22 Genoa (Non-conference) Darien 34 - 6 Sharon In the first game of Darien's 1954 football season Russ Richardson ran for two touchdowns to give Darien 12-0 victory over Whitewater College High. Russ ran around end for 50 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter. He got the other in a 8 yard run at the end of the third period. Jerry Sheahan was a great standout to Darien, both on offense and defense. He injured a shoulder, late in the game which put him out of football for the rest of the season. Darien went to victory against Palmyra with the score 16-0. In the fourth quarter Russ scored the first touchdown on a 20 yard run and Gordon Putman kicked the extra point. The second touchdown was scored by Gordon on a 30 yard run and Edwin Wilke kicked the extra point. It was a victorious evening for Darien when they defeated Clinton 45-2 for the Eagles fourth straight win. Russ had a field day with one 70 yard run, two of 65, one of 60, and a plunge of 5 yards. Hardy Kroeze and Eddie each scored a touchdown. Clinton's two points came on a safety when a runner was tackled in the end zone. Darien suffered its only loss of the season to Richmond. The score was 30-14. Russ did all the scoring for Darien on-tow touchdowns and one dropkick. It was a very good afternoon when Darien defeated Williams Bay 52-26 for the Eagles fifth win. Russ scored five touchdowns on runs of 6, 15, 25, and two of 60 yards. Hardy scored two touchdowns. Jerry Packard scored four points on two dropkicks after touchdowns. Don Oleston also scored one touchdown. Darien scored another victory against Genoa City. Russ scored four touchdowns against Genoa. This was about the coldest game Darien played all year. This was a non-conference game. Darien was victorious against Sharon to give Darien runner up honors in the Southern Regional Conference. Russ scored the first touchdown for Darien and Packard kicked the extra point. Donald Conley intercepted a pass for 45 yards and the other touchdown. Another pass from Russ to Eddie made the fourth touchdown and Packard kicked the extra point. Hardy went 39 yards for the last touchdown which left the score Darien 34 and Sharon 6. Russel Richardson was elected captain for the season and received a trophy for his work. This season was the best Darien has had since 1944. When they were Conference Champions. 22
