THE 1955 EAGLE Published by the Students of DARIEN HIGH SCHOOL Darien, Wisconsin FOREWORD This is the story of Darien High School and its graduating class of 1 955. It gives a complete record of the activities of the year. As we look back through this book we will remember our teachers, classmates, studies and the good times we've had in Darien High School. During our stay we have witnessed many changes. Not only in the school itself but in the teachers, studies, and classmates. When the class of 1955 entered as freshmen; many were in a strange place, and faced new problems. They all met these challenges which prepared them for the future. This class has worked hard and graduated with a good record behind them. They are now ready to build a future--probably with different results. As each class graduates they join a large family of alumni. Many of the alumni keep in contact with the school and return to the social activities. We enjoy having them back and hope this tradition will continue. We have prepared this book so every one can look back through it and remember their wonderful high school days. Russ ran around end for 50 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter. He got the other in a 8 yard run at the end of the third period. Jerry Sheahan was a great standout to Darien, both on offense and defense. He injured a shoulder, late in the game which put him out of football for the rest of the season. Darien went to victory against Palmyra with the score 16-0. In the fourth quarter Russ scored the first touchdown on a 20 yard run and Gordon Putman kicked the extra point. The second touchdown was scored by Gordon on a 30 yard run and Edwin Wilke kicked the extra point. Hardy Kroeze and Eddie each scored a touchdown. Clinton's two points came on a safety when a runner was tackled in the end zone. Darien suffered its only loss of the season to Richmond. The score was 30-14. Russ did all the scoring for Darien on-tow touchdowns and one dropkick. It was a very good afternoon when Darien defeated Williams Bay 52-26 for the Eagles fifth win. Russ scored five touchdowns on runs of 6, 15, 25, and two of 60 yards. Hardy scored two touchdowns. Jerry Packard scored four points on two dropkicks after touchdowns. The team elected Ernie Kalb as its captain for the season. Russ Richardson was a large asset to the team for his outstanding ball playing. Russ earned the title oi high point man of the Southern Regional Conference having 336 points for the season, these include only conference games. Darien is certainly proud of their team. Left to right: Paul Kalb, Glen Kruizenga, Allen Austin, Eugene Hejhal, Emil Wenzel, David Cowell, and Jerry Scott. 33 WHO’S WHO Donald Conley Cheryl McKinney jerry Sheahan Russell Richardson Janet Zwieg Probably the girl who is recognized the most in school is Janet Zwieg. In the Who's Who Contest Janet was elected most popular, best looking, best pal, quietest, and most studious girl. Janet is rather quiet but friendly to all. She finds rime to be in things and yet keep up her A average. A boy who is good in every sport and an A-l baritone player is bound to be popular and everyone's friend. This boy at Darien happens to be Russ Richardson. For these reasons he was voted most popular, most athletic, and most talented boy. In every school there are pests and witty characters. Jerry Sheahan is the life of the party and will surely be missed next year for his wise cracks and practical jokes. Jerry, our best male dancer, can also settle down on the dance floor. The girls do not let the boys get all tne honors for keeping things going. Cheryl McKinney was Jerry's mate when it comes to fooling. For this reason Cheryl was voted the biggest pest and wittiest girl. Don Conley, a quiet likable guy who is full of fun. was elected as our best pal boy. He always has a smile and is a happy go lucky guy. 34 WHO’S WHO Patsy Williams Hardy Kroezc Danielle Duvall Avis Dutton Robert Verhoef One of our better girl athletes is Danielle Duvall. Danielle is our head cheerleader and enjoys many sports. When it comes to volleyball, basketball, or bowling she is always there to take part. The boy voted best looking this year was Hardy Kroeze. Hardy not only has the looks but very good taste in clothes and a good build to go into them. He certainly is a neat fellow. Most girls are good dancers but there is an exceptionally good one in Darien whose name is Pat Williams. Pat can do almost any kind of a dance and with good rhythm. After looking over the senior class the students have chosen Avis Dutton and Bob Verhoef as the girl and boy most likely to succeed. They have both worked hard in school and will probably continue to do so after high school. It was for this reason that great things are expected of them. 35 WHO’S WHO Larry Jacobson Ruby Meyer Pat Veley is the most talented girl. Pat accompanied the Mixed Chorus and also many solos. She also played solo comet in the band and sang soprano in choir. A girl who can do all these things has to spend a lot of time practicing which Pat surely has. Of course we have a flirt and this year we decided it was Ruby. Ruby enjoys life and believes In having fun while she has a chance. She laughs and talks with everyone. For these reasons many consider her a flirt. Although some people don't think so. boys also study. Jerry is rather quiet but a swell guy. The student body voted Jerry Conley the quietest and most studious boy. Our other pest was Jerry Packard. Jerry seems to go out of his way to tease someone, but everyone knows he is doing it for fun and goes along with him. This year the biggest wolf was Larry Jacobson. He really enjoys life, especially when there are lots of air Is l rni i 36 MASSED CHORUS AND MASSED BAND First Row-left to right: Pat Rammien, Cheryl McKinney, Patsy Williams, Janet Zwieg. The Letterman's Club has run the concession stand at the games in order to make money for its activities. The Club awards jackets to the major letter winners which are blue and gold with leather sleeves. Most of the Club's money goes toward the buying of these jackets. A. is to promote an interest in sports and to learn how to be good sports. Our first task was to elect officers. They are as follows; President, Janet Zwieg, Vice President, Esther Schryvers, Secretary, Danielle Duvall, Treasurer, Barbara Thiele, Club Representative, Pat Veley, Director, Miss Shaw. On Tuesday, September 21st, the new members were initiated. They had to roll their jeans knee high and walk to Delavan Springs. This year there was a little difficulty, such as a fainting spell and a few sideaches, but everything turned out O. K. The most exciting event was hunting for sticks to roast hot dogs on. After we finished eating we went to the show. This year we went on some hikes and had some parties. Miss Shaw was our director. 41 First Row: left to right: Ruby Meyers. Ruth Redemus. Eugene Woodard.
