F O R E Our high school days will soon become memories to the class of 1953. In the future, as we look through our annuals, we will recall our teachers, classmates, studies, and the many good times we had here in Darien High School. The purpose of this. 1953 EAGLE, is to serve as a record of the service given by the school and to call to mind the many phases of school life. The theme---Memory Lane-----has been chosen because, as we look through this and other annuals it will bring back memories of the many events and of the happy days when we were in high school. This book contains a record of our activities for the past years. The twelve years of schooling which we have now completed are the foundations on which we shall build our future. The opportunity to learn is set before us. We are now ready to build our futures- probably all of us in different ways and with different results. The important thing is to broaden our knowledge and to make new and better records. As you turn the pages, think of your school lives--as Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, and on back---those happy days we spent down----Memory Lane. 2 Contents Memory Lane Page 1 Dedication 4 Faculty 5 Seniors 9 U nderclassmen 23 Activities 33 Sporti 51 Qrades 66 Advertising 72 3 Dedication The members of the 1953 Eagle Staff wish to dedicate this book to Mrs. Myra Gosso. But now we must part and go our way Can we ever gain back this one last day? How short the years seem to us now We knew we’d make it, not quite sure how. Way back in ’49, when we started out How simple our life was we cannot doubt, lo parties and dances we made our way How grateful to classmates we cannot say. Even our teachers will miss us, I'm sure, Will we ever forget our Washington tour? Our lockers will welcome a new load of junk From another class who thinks neatness is bunk. But all in all we have done our best And we’re ready now, for life’s own test. . 20 Words by Evelyn Kelly Music to “Why Don't You Believe Me?” We’re Seniors and now we say, Wre wish we were back; Back in all the classrooms Of our Freshmen days. We’ll miss you dear teachers And students as well; We’ll miss all the fun we had Durin6 all of these years. Here we were angels and devils, (mostly devils) Here is the place where we learned. All of the knowledge we now know That we shall always keep. Wre bid you good-bye dear friends We’ll see you again, We now have graduated From old Darien High. Words by Betty Boniface 21 Senior Prophecy On May 25. 1963. I was speeding along highway 15 when one of my jet motors frizzed out. I hopped out of the car and started walking toward Darien. A shiny Cadillac whizzed past me then screeched to a stop. A beautiful blonde stuck her head out of the window and waved to me. 1 recognized Joyce Martin, my old classmate. 1 hopped into her car and sank six inches in fur upholstery. Joyce laughed and said Oh dear. 1 told Ray three inches of mink would be enough. Then it came to me. Joyce had married Ray Orentas and their mink ranch was prospering. Joyce told me she had three children and was very happy. We arrived in Darien and drove to the home of Ronnie Wheeler. It was located on a hill west of town. As we walked into the house who should greet us but Margery our old pal. She said she married Ronnie so she wouldn't have to change her name. She and Ronnie were kept busy between here and Hollywood with Marge's horse Tony, a star in westerns and Ronnie as the new romantic rage of movies. We went into the spacious living room, there we saw a familiar bunch of faces. Dorothy Hohenfeldt was perched on the piano singing a popular tune while Lois Albright played. We all gathered around and were singing the Old Darien Loyalty when we heard the golden tone of our mascot. Petunia, being played by Betty Boniface now a minister’s wife. When we had finished singing everyone started talking at once. So I said let's all sit down and take turns telling about ourselves. Nancy Tremaine started off by telling us of her prospering marriage bureau located in Whitewater. The door slammed and in walked Don Hayes with his wife and twins, his story was right before our eyes. They sat down and Charlotte Wilday. now Mrs. Papcke began to tell us of her gift shop located in Palmyra. A siren blowing outside made us all jump to the window and we saw Stella Kroeze dressed in her nurse's dress stepping from an ambulance. She leaped over the rose bushe6 and dashed into the house which showed she still had her old pep. Breathlessly she told us how she and her husband who is a doctor were building a hospital in town. Pretty soon a young man in a uniform came up the walk, we all gasped for it was Dick Radtke of the U. S. Air Forces. He told us he was making the service his career. We had just settled down again when in walked two galmorous gals who indentified themselves as Diane Vorpahl and Betty Wilkins. They had just arrived from New York where they were employed as fashion models. It was getting late and we were getting ready to go down town for our reunion dinner when in came Clarke Parker. He told us he had been busy with a sick dog at his veterinary office. We all laughed and proceeded to the Flamingo Club. There we ran into none other than Mrs. Gosso our old class advisor. She was glad to see us and we invited her to be our guest of honor as we sat down to our dinner of frog legs at last! Oh yes, my husband was at home in Delavan taking care of our triplets. 23 Almost Seniors 24 Things So Far The Junior Class began the year with nine members. Bob's parents force him to break a date with Carrie so he can go with Eunice. Naturally Bob has a hard time explaining to Carrie. After learning the truth Carrie decides to stay and take care of the Gordon children so Bob's folks can go to a party. Everyone leaves and Carrie finds the evening isn't going to be as quiet as she expected. Junior insists he won’t have anyone stay with him and therefore tries everything to get rid of Carrie. In the above picture you see Carrie in a one-sided pillow fight with Junior and his friend. Lefty. Bob's parents come home just when Carrie is forcing Junior to eat some egg whites and dry mustard but learn later it was only to save his life. The play ends with Bob taking Carrie home, and as usual, getting back quite late. 26 We’re Qrowing Up ERNEST KALB ROBERT VERHOEF Cla R«pr« enUUVC CHERYL McKINNEY RUTH REDENIUS SecreUry jerry sheahan DONALD OLESTON KAY PARKER Prelidcnl AVIS DUTTON Tr “r r WILLIAM kelly We’re Qrowing Up X u)isV owr c ss had v' Yni li msh 28 Our Past The Sophomore Class started the year with eleven members. The teen-age girls are going to stay by themselves at one of the girl’s homes. The boys plan to scare them by dressing up as a prowler. When the boys arrive they are surprised to be met by the real prowler. The story ends with the prowler bound tightly and ready for jail. Actors and Actresses “What Are You Going To Wear?” This play is about some teen-age girls who couldn’t decide on what to wear to a hike. Consequently they all came in different outfits, such as: formals. evening dresses, bathing suits, and blue jeans. Dress Rehearsal” Trying to get ready for the play is quite a job for the coach as this is dress rehearsal. The boys think they look foolish in the clothes they have to wear. The climax came when Horace gets hit for correcting the others too many times. 39 Speakers and Speech Makers STANDING: E. Kelly, P. Putmen. B. Verhoef. S. Kroeze, G. Bate . B. Boniface. B. Wilkin . Darien vs. Capron: Capron took the kickoff and marched the length of the field for the first T. D. to make the score 6 to 0. The game was a seesaw game from there on until the last quarter when Darien connected with a long pass to tie the score. In the last few minutes Capron got a safety on Darien and won 8 to 6. Darien and Clinton battled a rough game with the score 0 to 0 at the half. In the third quarter Darien scored first. It was 6 to 0 until the last two minutes when Clinton scored to lead 7 to 6. Pass interference the last two minutes, gave Darien the ball in which they scored to win 12 to 7. 52 Campaign Notes Darien traveled to Williams Bay and lost a rough game to the Bay boys 22 to 0. It was Darien's worst defeat. Darien traveled to Sharon on Sharon's Homecoming and beat Sharon by a score of 66 to 12. Darien scored freely throughout the game, for an easy victory. Richmond came to Darien on Darien's Homecoming, with high spirits of knocking us off. Richmond got off to a fast start by scoring in the first two quarters to lead 12 to 0 at the half. The third quarter was mostly a defensive battle. In the last quarter both teams scored once more, but, Darien's attack came to late. The final score was Richmond 18 to Darien’s 6. Hebron came to Darien on Ocotber 24, this game was Dad’s night at Darien. The team showed the Dad's a swell game by smothering Herbon 60 to 25 in an easily won game. Darien traveled to Whitewater to play its final game of the season. In the first quarter George Smith was knocked out and things looked bad for Darien. The team still played good ball and the score at the half was 19 to 18 in favor of Whitewater. After the half Whitewater came back strong with one quick T. D. to lead then 25 to 18. Darien then started to roll by scoring 30 points in the last two quarters to go on and win a hard game 48 to 32. Darien traveled to Norris Farm to play a Non-Conference game on October 10. This was a rough game but the Darien six came through with a 32 to 20 victory. Another high light of the year was our last home game when the High School team played the Alumni on February 17. Fall Celebration On September 26. 1952. the Homecoming tesuvities began with the first Homecoming Parade in our school history. For weeks before, the classes planned and built floats. There were five floats competing in this parade. The Senior float, which carried the King and Queen was the only one not in the running. 56 Fall Celebration Prizes were awarded by Darien businessmen, Ralph Bull, Ed Anderson, and Dori6 Woodford. First prize went to the Freshman float, second prize to seventh and eighth grades, and third to the Sophomores. Also included in the parade were grade school children on bicylces, decorated in many colors, an old car trimmed in blue and gold, two horseback riders, and several kids just walking. The whole parade was led by a clown band made up of Seniors. They were dressed as clowns and really acted the part. The whole town turned out to make the parade a big success. The floats were parked in the schoolyard with spotlights shining on them during the game. Between halves the queen and her court rode around the field in a 1951 red convertible. After the game, as a climax, was the Homecoming dance. The gym was decorated in blue and gold streamers. There was a small football bearing the names of each player hanging from the center of the gym. At 9:30 Jerry Sheahan was crowned 1952 Homecoming King by George Smith, last year's king. Jerry's queen was Patsy Williams. Members of the court were George Smith Jean Gleason, Danielle Duvall, Ron Jacobson, Kay Parker. Ernest Kalb. Barbara Kitzman. Clarke Parker, and Betty Boniface and Ron W'hecler. There was a little gloominess because of the outcome of the game, but not enough to spoil the mood of the evening. The music was furnished by Two Sharps and a Flat. 57 Our Winter Sport BACK ROW: B. V l y. G. Smith. R. Wheeler. J. Kruea r. R- J cob on. B. Kelly. E. Kalb. C. Parker. FRONT ROW D. Haye . G. Putman. The lack of height, and reserve power was a great disadvantage. Although the team only won 3 games we were tough competition for some of the best teams in the Conference, losing most of our games by only a few points. The team was third in scoring offensively in the Conference, and also third in defense from the bottom. Maybe the record is poor, but 1 think the boys should be credited for the swell work they have done in athletics. We entered the Whitewater tournament and was scheduled to play Hartland. we played a very good game against Hartland but lost a close game by a score of 58 to 55 this eliminated us from playing any more in the tournament. 58 Coach Prahl Ron Wheeler-Captain Position-Forward Height 5‘9 Senior W inter Heroes BASKETBALL SCHEDULE Darien-----51 Darien- - - 57 Darien- - - 43 Darien----46 Darien----30 Darien- - - 48 Darien- - - 40 Darien----60 Darien----62 Darien- - - 60 Darien----58 Darien- - - 47 Darien- - - 51 Darien----62 Darien - - - 5 I Darien-----77 57-----Capron 51 ---Genoa City 62 ---College High 57----Palmyra 61----Clinton 63 ---N. Our substitute Jean Gleason, started cheering to replace Evelyn Kelly just before the end of the first semester, because of Evelyn's back injury. The girls attended the cheerleaders' banquet at Clinton, and won second place on their skit, Just Basketball. I'm sure the cheerleaders of next year will miss Betty and her horn. Petunia, which was our mascot. The girls are quite proud of their new uniforms which consist of royal blue circle skirts, gold rayon blouses, and white bucks. The cheerleaders have done a wonderful job in livening up the cheering section. We have had a very good turn out for all of our games, and they would like to say thanks for the good cheering section they've had. It really helps a lot. In the later part of September we spent a few weeks working on a float for the Homecoming Parade. W'e received second place in the parade and a check for $5.00, which came in quite handy. Our basketball team wasn't quite as good as it could have been but we still enjoyed seeing the boys play.
