Darien opened the 1950 football season with seven players reporting to Mr. Cutkneckt. They were Dick Dutton, J i m Statema, Ronny Meyer, Chuck Wilke, Butch Oleston, George Smith, and Ronnie Wheeler. Later on Allen Erkfritz, Rodney Sveiven, Johnny Peters, Jack Statema, Francis Cary, George TJeerdsma, and Don Hayes Joined the team. Darien finished the season with overall record of two wins, four losses, and one tie. The first game of the year saw Darien loose to Richmond under the lights at Darien in a very hard fought battle. The score was 18-0. Darien traveled to the Bay where they couldn't seem to get going and they lost 52-12. Darien then traveled to Sharon where they met defeat at the hands of the Panthers. The score of 49 to 30 showed that Darien was improving. Darien came home to win over Hebron under the lights 34-18. The Eagles played very inspiring ball to win over a big Hebron team. The Eagles then traveled to Whitewater where they upset a very highly favored White-water team on a long pass from Statema to Oleston in the last minute of the game. The boys received a steak dinner from the coach and Mr. Cox for winning. In the last game of the season Darien lost to the conference champs in a high scoring game. The final score was Darien20and Capron43. Jim Statema was elected captain by the members of the football team. Hornecormncj Cola nTT Back Row - Doris Wendorf, Mary Cary, Evelyn Kelly, Katherine Behrens Front Row - Jean Gleason, Betty Boniface, Roberta Clowes On October 26, Palmyra traveled to Darien for the 1950 Homecoming game. Palmyra kicked off to Darien and on the first play Ronny Meyers ran the ball 45 yards to the Palmyra 2 yard line. On the next play Ronny Meyers went into the end zone and fumbled, but Ralph Oleston recovered for the first touchdown. Then Palmyra took the ball and Murdock passed to Blomery 55 yards for the first touchdown for Palmyra. Murdock ran for the extra point. In the second quarter Ochs caught Chuck Wilke behind the goal line trying to punt and Palmyra got a safety which added two points to their score. That making the half time score 9-6. At the beginning of the second half Darien took the ball and marched up the field with Chuck Wilke going over on an eight yard plunge. Then Palmyra came back with a-nother touchdown making the score 15-12. In the fourth and final quarter, Jimmy Statema plunged two yards for the third touchdown and then Statema passed to Dutton 30 yards for the fourth and final touchdown. With time running out Murdock passed to Erickson for a touchdown and then Northey added a two point placement to make the final score 24-24. Between halves of the game the king and queen rode around the football field in a 1921 ford decorated with blue and gold streamers. To climax the Homecoming activities was the Homecoming Dance. The gym was gaily decorated with blue and gold streamers and colorful football cartoons which were placed around the gym. Betty Boniface reigned as the Homecoming queen with Don Hayes as her king. On the whole the Homecoming Dance was a big success with everyone just a little bit gloomy because of the outcome of the game the night before. The big reason the team did not win more games was because of inexperience and the lack of reserve power. Two of the most Impressive games were the victories over Whitewater and Capron. In the Walworth tournament everything went wrong as Darien dropped the first game to the Bay. The next night Darien tried to redeem themselves but were unable to cope with the Sharon team’s height. High scores for the season were Jim Statema-201; Dick Dutton-131; Ronald Meyer-168. Dick Dutton was elected captain by the members of the team. A. this year is directed by Miss Mary Bergin, our Home Economics and Physical Education teacher. She is a resident of Hebron, Illinois and received her education at Mount Mary, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In some of the recent years the G. A. A. hasn’t been very active, but in September when our club was organized, we vowed to become active. We began with a hike to Snyders's woods, where we had a picnic. On November 18, the students danced under a Harvest Moon to the music from Lester Lee’s Orchestra. When December came we began making a layette for a baby in a poor family. In the cold months of January and February we had a toboggan party and a sleigh ride. In March we took up bowling. Then when spring rolled in and the grass was soft and moist we ended our successful year with a picnic. Pins, bars, and letters, were awarded to members with a given number of points.
