Mrs. Bertha Slankard Every weekday morning, while students are sleepily preparing for another school day, Mrs. Bertha Slank- ard, cafeteria manager, is already at school, directing the preparation of lunches for about 750 students daily in addition to the certificated and classified staffs. She began her work 28 years ago with the help of a home- making teacher in development of the cafeteria, then assumed the role of cafeteria manager. During times of inflation, she and her small staff kept lunch prices low by using surplus government commodities and other magic tricks, while also meeting all the government regulations on vitamins and other details. Satisfying the desires of a variety of people at reasonable prices earned her the respect and admiration of both students and school staff as she closed out her service to the district in November, 1971. HS Bids a Fond Farewell Mr. Ralph Allen The boys' physical education department in the fall will be missing the devoted service of Ralph Allen, a teaching staff member for 19 years, 18 of which have been as head of the physical education department. Since his arrival at Delano High in the fall of 1953, he has instituted a well- organized and directed program of activities for boys in physical education. Mr. Allen's service in education totals 30 years. He also spent four years as a Naval officer dur- ing World War II. This soft spoken instructor, who has a great dedication to his work and interest in his students, assisted coaching B football and track during his first years at Delano. He had also coached previously at other schools. At Delano High he is credited with launching the wrestling program which he guided for eight years. His departure from Delano High will allow him more time to devote to his hobbies of antique and toy collecting.
