As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly Sz clearlyg and listen to others, even the dull and ignorantg they too have their story. Avoid loud Sz aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitterg for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble, it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairsg for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there isg many persons strive for highidealsg and every- where life is full of heroism. A Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about loveg for intheface of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with your- self. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and starsg you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. - Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you con- ceive Him to be, andwhatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. And let your best be for your friend. If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him know its flood also. For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill? Seek him always with hours to live. For it is his to fill your need, but not your emptiness. And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures. For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed. This is to have succeeded. --Emerson In Dedication To Mr. Tom Hoskins Dedication of the 1972 Del-Ano is made to Tom Hoskins, who prior to this year had been the year- book adviser for eight years and who duringhis nine years at Delano High School has passed on a lasting message and body of knowledge to all those who have been his students. His 14 years as an adviser and 15 years in teaching include previous teaching in Emporia, Kansas. His wit in the classroom make no day dull to his students, and his many rugged assignments pre- sent a constant challenge to those who sit before him. Indebtedness is the feeling of his students be- cause of his helpfulness, the hard work he devotes to make each day a new learning experience, his in- terest in student problems, and the inspiration in- stilled in his students to achieve to the best of their ability in English. The chief quality he encourages his students to develop is that of thinking,,' to develop their minds to think through any situation they may encounter. For his interest in students, we admire him, we thank him, we congratulate him. 3 19' 2 wr ts: 5 311, J QR, ,, wx Zim? The Prophet Board of Trustees The governing board of Delano High School as representatives of the public has the responsibility of making major policy de- cisions for the school district with the advice of the school staff. The board is composed of Dr. Ed Yoon, Jack Phillips, Lido Sandrini, Marion Smith, and Ronald Cole, President. Enrollment Reaches 1,7 29 Enrollment during the first weeks of school climbed to 1,729 students as the teaching staff be- gan its task of wrapping up the highschool education of the 58th graduating class and the underclassmen. Major change was reduction from a seven- to six-period day as one of the means of balancing the budget at 32,214,644 The science building, nearly destroyed by fire in the fall of 1970, was ready for class use in September, 1971, andthe new warehouse west of the bus garage was also ready for use. A new elective program in the English depart- ment, placement of homeroom responsibilities with fifth period, shifting athletics to after school, de- velopment of a work experience program, and in- troduction of the Regional Occupation Center were all major changes during the year. The student body continued to select from among seven curricula to prepare for college entrance or to terminate their education with high school. Delano High, established in 1911, includes four acres of classroom sites spread over a 20-acre area plus physical education and athletic fields. The campus also includes 41 acres of school farm adjoining the campus and another 80 acres of school farm land west of Delano. About 585 of the students were trans- ported by a fleet of 12 buses, seven of which are diesel, including a newly purchased 79-passenger bus. Superintcndenfs Message DEL-ARIJO MESSAGE 1971 - 72 At Delano High School, as at other schools, moods are as many and as varied as the people that make up the school. Each of us each day react to the weather, to one another and to our tasks. From this complex interaction between us as individuals and our physical and social environment and among us, one with another, springs our feeling about life and our place in it. For its part, the people of our school district, acting through their elected representa- tives of the Governing Board, have attempted to pro- vide a general school setting that is attractive as well as safe, and comfortable as well as efficient as a place to learn. In addition, the people of our school district have attempted to provide employees who take pride in trying to keep our classrooms and campus clean and all of our complicated machinery working. Most of all, there has been a continuing effort in providing students with useful tools - the books, films, maps, sound tapes, and paper -with which to learn and in providing well-prepared, en- thusiastic teachers who are dedicated to the task of helping students learn and to achieve the excellence of which they are capable. It is my hope that this enthusiasm for learning and this dedication to the attempt to achieve excellence will be the prevailing mood with which our school is identified as gradu- ates remember their days as students of Delano High gawk Sql Dr. Frank E. She began her work 28 years ago with the help of a home- making teacher in development of the cafeteria, then assumed the role of cafeteria manager. During times of inflation, she and her small staff kept lunch prices low by using surplus government commodities and other magic tricks, while also meeting all the government regulations on vitamins and other details. Satisfying the desires of a variety of people at reasonable prices earned her the respect and admiration of both students and school staff as she closed out her service to the district in November, 1971. HS Bids a Fond Farewell Mr. Ralph Allen The boys' physical education department in the fall will be missing the devoted service of Ralph Allen, a teaching staff member for 19 years, 18 of which have been as head of the physical education department. Since his arrival at Delano High in the fall of 1953, he has instituted a well- organized and directed program of activities for boys in physical education. Mr. Allen's service in education totals 30 years. He also spent four years as a Naval officer dur- ing World War II. This soft spoken instructor, who has a great dedication to his work and interest in his students, assisted coaching B football and track during his first years at Delano. He had also coached previously at other schools. At Delano High he is credited with launching the wrestling program which he guided for eight years. His departure from Delano High will allow him more time to devote to his hobbies of antique and toy collecting. STUDENT LIFE The wind blows and the sky .floats. One can't happen without the other. Organization of the book, a sales campaign, division of advertisements to be sold, and general policy were out- lined as the staff prepared quickly to meet a deadline of 16 pages two weeks after the start of school. The summer planning led to another first for the Del-Ano, plans for a 16-page supplement. This is a section of activities which take place from the time of the usual last copy deadline in March through graduation. The added section can easily be taped into the year- book to provide memories of those previously never recorded events. Adoption of a Student Life section to cover student body government, general happenings on campus, and organizations was one innovation of the staff with a fall sales campaign also be- gun as staff members prodded their classmates to buy copies before the deadline. Fall sales netted more than 850 yearbook subscribers as senior staffer Cathy Martinez with 138 sold achieved the S25 sales prize. Keeping track of the con- tinual f low of negatives and prints, designing and redesigning pages, arranging and taking pho- tographs, and writing and re- writing copy were the tasks of the staff in gathering the con- tents of the 1972 yearbook. Holly Phillipsen served as editor-in-chief, Marcia Mis- sakian was business manager, David Najera the sports editor for the fourth year, Kris Kouk- lis the art editor and in charge of division pages, Jeanette Mina in charge of class sections, Rose- mary and Su s an Espinosa plan- ning student life, Arcadio Jose in charge of photography, Mary Hofman and Cynthia Schwartz heading the faculty section and other staff members heading the myriad of areas necessary to complete a story-telling annual. Selected to the all-league team were junior halfback Jeff Beck, who gained 1,244 yards in 159 carries for a 7.9 average, for the second time 5 center Scott Radovich, and end Pat Segawa, all on offense, and, ondefense, linebacker James Fragoso, who contributed 107 season tackles, and junior halfback Clifford Dunn. Accorded honorable mention were tackle Mike Thompson, quarterback Lupe Diaz, full- back Lawrence Ludy, and tackle-linebacker Bob Franklin. Varsity Captures Second Place The Tigers opened their home season against the ever-potent offensive machine of the East Bakers- field Blades. The idea, Even the sharpest Blade can't shave a Tigerf' didn't prove true, as the Bakersfield crew tripped up the locals, 21-6. Jeff Beck's seven-yard blast fleftj, provided the only scoring punch for the frustrated Tiger of- fense. The sputtering Tiger machine limped back home to face the Mt. Whitney Pioneers. Forty-eight minutes later, Mt. Whitney had pocketed a 14-0 victory and sent the reeling, Tigers down to their fourth straight loss. The Pioneers' excellent kicking game bottled up Delano's offense all night long, and their tenacious defense picked off three Tiger aerials. The lone bright spot in the Tiger effort was the strong defensive performance turned in by the locals, Jeff Beck 1405 streaks 70 yards down the sideline en route to scoring the first Tiger touchdown of the 1971 season. The under- dog Delano gridders turned in a sparkling team effort to snatch a 12-0 victory from the jaws of the rugged Merced Bears. Del- anois invincible defense completely stopped the Bear attack, forcing three crucial fum- bles. Fullback Lawrence Ludy tallied the final Tiger score on a two-yard smash. Glue-fingered end Pat Sagewa C813 sees stars before his eyes after latching on to a Lupe Diaz aerial during second-period action at North, The Tiger Machine had high hopes of upsetting the powerful Stars, but the North Bakersfield eleven rolled up a 37-6 lead and then coasted in to victory, 37-20. Spearhead- ing the Tiger attack was junior standout, Jeff Beck, who scored all three Tiger touch- downs. 7 1 1 Tigers Post 5-5 Lo Ex-CYL foe Redwood was next to invade Tiger country, and they found an uninspired Tiger team purring, not growling, at them. The locals, eager for a win to boost their 1-3 season mark, came out snarling, only to suffer continual bad luck throughout the evening. Redwood capitalized on De- lano fumbles, busted plays, and blocking break- downs to tame the Tigers, 20-6. Our lone touch- down, early in the fourth quarter, came on 40- yard pass play from senior quarterback Lupe Diaz to Jeff Beck. Lawrence Ludy 1321 rips through the Porterville line on an- other of his ground gobbling rushes. The Tigers opened play in the newly-formed East Yosemite League in spectacular fashion, demolishing the Panthers, 41-20. The powerful Tiger offensive machine moved at will, scoring three touchdowns in the first period. The score mounted to 35-12 at halftime, but by then the issue had already been decided. Tiger gridders figuring in the scoring were Jeff Beck 14 TD'sJ, Clifford Dunn 41 TDl, Jesse Gonzales fl TDl, and Tom Drake Q5 conversion kicksj. Keeping his nose to the grindstone fand also in the Memorial Stadium turfj, Clifford Dunn plows on from the one to chalk up another Tiger touchdown. Playing before a Homecoming crowd of near 3,000 fans, the Tigers utilized their powerful offense to romp to victory over the Tulare Western Mustangs. The locals now 2-0 in league play, battled to a 13-8 halftime advantage, then raced away from Western to notch a 35-20 win. The speedy Dunn electrified local rooters by returning the second-half kickoff 86 yards to pay- dirt. Delano Gffensc Second In EYL Scoring The revitalized Tigers journeyed to Monache to settle the issue of first place in the EYL, The highly regarded Marauders proved too much to handle for the Delano gridders, trouncing the locals 33-15. The Porterville-based squad took advantage costly Delano errors to race away to a 21-7 halftime lead, and breezed through the second half. Defensive leader Pat Segawa nailed the Monache punter for a safety, and also was a shining star on offense, gathering in a touchdown pass from halfback Clifford Dunn. The Delano bench reflects the all-out effort put forth by the 34-member squad against Hanford. Delano clinched second place by defeating the Bullpups, 26- 13. Jeff Beck on the first play from scrimmage broke loose on a trap for a 69-yard touchdown run. Later, defensive lineman Richard Garcia intercepted a pass and ran it back 73 yards for a touchdown. The other scores included a 60-yard run on a screen pass to Beck and a 17-yard run into the end zone by Johnny Jenkins, James Fragoso 1305 administers another bone-jarring tackle to another unfortunate Tulare runner during first half action against the Redskins. The two teams put on a sensational of- fensive show, scoring ten touchdowns between them. The locals' 40-32 win keeps them second inleague behind Monache, with only Hanford left to play. The Tiger's six TD's were divided among Jeff Beck 135, Johnny Jenkins fly, Clifford Dunn fly and Jesse Gonzales fly. This year was the best showing in tournaments Delano ever had, capped by a second place team standing in the valley tournament. The varsity also placed third in the Morro Bay tournament, second in the Highland Tournament, third in the Bakers- field College Tournament, and first in the largest tournament held in California, the Cal Poly Tourney. The grapplers outdistanced 31 other schools by 12 1X2 points with two champions at Cal Poly. Only three seniors will be lost this season, so next year's team will be just asgstrong. The three, seniors were Jack Pandol, Doug Klinchuch, and Cal- vin Waldrop. Klinchuch and Pandol were in the wrestling pro- gram four years. Between them, the varsity gained 152 wins, more than any two wrestlers combined in Delano history. Klinchuch is the first four-year letterman and has the most overall wins in the sport since it has been established in Delano. Pandol and Klinchuch have received the outstanding awards for all four years of their high school career. These two were the key to Delano's success during the past two undefeated campaigns, according to Coach Moreland. opponent on his back. Coachl' talks to Joe Hochschild about the upcom- ing Lions tournament. 40 Years Cf Dedication Coaching wizard youth leader Mr. Everything? These are only three of the superlatives that can be tagged on behind the name Ray Frederick. During his forty years of service in Delano, his drive and initiative sparked many proj- ects for area youth, including a lighted baseball park, the formation of the Greater Delano Area Youth Foundation, and the founding of the Delano Baseball Tournament. Known as Delano's one - man recreation department for many years, Mr. Frederick organized summer sports programs for restless youths in such fields as baseball and swimming. J ake Lawlor, athletic director at the University of . Nevada, states, I con- sider Ray Frederick the greatest school and athletic man I have ever had the privilege and pleasure of working with, and the finest friend. No one in my life has had as much influence on my ca- reer of coaching as Ray. He was and is the kind of a man who always placed his staff and school above his own personal ambitions and success, and I recall the many favors in my behalf during a peri- Coach Frederick in 1930. od when I certainly could use help and guidance. A skilled athlete himself, consid- ered one ofthe 'All-Time' basketball players at U. of Nevada, Ray was cap- able of coaching any sport known to man, because of his great enthusiasm, love for youngsters, and the practical psy- chology he possessed from birth. Ath- letics was his life, although I am sure his influence on the thousands of young people going through Delano High both on the athletic areas and the classroom gave them a definite boost to becoming fine men and women. At Delano High he has served as vice-principal and attendance director in addition to coaching, classroom teaching, and his present job of athletic director. Always an early riser, Mr. Frederick arrived on campus at 6:30 each morning. At the close of this school year, he stepped down from his post to enjoy some of the finer aspects of life. In his stead, he leaves a trail of greatness for all of us to follow. Farewell, Coach. We hate to see you leave. lO5 i UN DERCLASSMEN An empty year stood waiting, silently, and we charged in anxious, excited, determined. Times weren't always good, but when I look back, and laugh about our youthful seriousness, the refrain of the years will have sweetened and smoothed out the sour times And my senior memories- - will be golden ones, and I will wonder why I didn't realize how good life was. - The last year of high school had a variety of meanings for all seniors. The senior year could have been a year of excitement for some who were just waiting to be on their own, or those who were looking forward to going to college. At the same time, the last year could have been a little sad for those who realized that they must say goodbye to their high school buddies and go their separate ways to the col- leges of their choice. Many looked forward to grad- uation, for it was the end of school and homework. The Class of '72 started the year off right by winning first place with its Homecoming float. The prize money, selling senior buttons, and profits from dances sponsored by the senior class helped to en- large the class treasury. Other activities included the Senior Sweatshirt Day, Faculty vs. Seniors football game, the Senior Breakfast, and the Senior Dinner-Dance. Seniors sold miniature tool kits and stationery to help finance their end-of-the-year trip to Disneyland. 160 The senior class officers were John Wright, vice-president, Scott Nagatani, president, Cindy Swarts, treasurer, Mary Lopez, secretary. The seniors attended class council on Wednesday's during the noon hour. The beginning of a last year. Passing time, we reach a peak of glory. Happy, momentous the beginning of an end. 161 162 LUPE AGARANO MELVIN AGBAYANI ROBERT AGTANG ESTHER AGUILAR FRANKIE AGUILAR JOE AGUILAR RUDY AGUILAR SEVERIANO ALCAIDE RICHARD ALCANTAR MARGARITA ALONZO LORENZO ALVARADO CECILIA ALVAREZ CONRADO ANCI-IETA VELIA ANTONIO CAMILO APOSTOL JOHN ARMINGTON FRANCISCO ARREOLA TONY ARAUZA SYLVIA BALLONEZ TEDDY BANGI PATRICIA BARBICH JANETTA BARNES ANNIE JO BEAVERS JEANNE BECK LINDA BOARDMAN GLORIA BONKOSKY STEPHEN BOREN GLORIA BORUNDA PATTY BOWER REAGAN BRANDON GLENDA BRATCHER FERNANDO BRAVO MARIAN BRUSZEWSKI PAULA BRYANT MARILYN BURNER RACHAEL CAMPOS LORI CANTELMI IRENE CARINO PAUL CASARES FELIX CASAS 163 wwf wr-'W WWW J 9 1641 ELENA CASTILLO ROSA CASTILLO CLYDE CATO JOE CAVASOS ELIZABETH CENA FERNANDO CEPRIANO JEANNE CESARE CLINTON CHAMBERLAJ PATTY CHANEY JESSE CHAPA REBECCA CHAVEZ DOUG CHROMAN MARILYN COMPTON BEN CONTRERAS GLORIA CORONADO JOEL CORTEZ PEGGY COWELL JAMES CRANFORD SYLVIA CRISTOBAL MARY CUEVAS VALERIE DARAPIZA FELISA DeGUZMAN STEVE DeLaROSA GILBERT DELGADILLO FELIPA DELGADO SANTOS Del RIO HERIBERTO DELUTE CHARLENE DePUE LUPE DIAZ PAMELA DIRKS PAM DISMUKES RICKY DORR DANNY DULAY ALEX EDILLOR JERRY EDWARDS SUSAN ELDREDGE SUSAN ENGLISH MIKE EPPERSON LEATHA ESKEW CARMEN ESPINOZA 165 F 5 We are living in a world of constant change 166 168 JOHNNY ESPINOZA ERENDIRA ESQUIVEL BELINDA ESTRADA RON ETHEREDGE JEFFREY FABBRI NORMA FAUCETT NANCY FERGUSON DELPHINA FIGUEROA TONY FLEMING ALFRED FLORES ROBERT FLORES JAMES FRAGOSO KENNY FRANKLIN RACHEL FRAUSTO KAREN FREEMAN ROGER FRYMIRE ALEX GABRIEL PAT GABRIEL ABEL GALINDO IRENE GARCIA MARTHA GARCIA RICHARD GARCIA MARY GARZA MARJORIE GESSNER DEBBIE GILBERT HELEN GIRARD SYLVIA GOMEZ VALENTINE GONZALEZ RHONDA GORMAN DENNIS GRANT PAM GRASMICK CAROLYN GREEN CHERRY GREEN SHEILA GRIMWOOD ALICIA GUERECA PHILLIP GUERRERO DAVID GUERZON GARY GUILLORY GARY GURON JOHN GUTIERREZ 169 is 170 KEVIN HARPER JOHN HARDIN CARLA HARRIS ROSEMARY HEDRICK JOYCE HENDERSON CATHY HENRY ANGIE HERNANDEZ ANTONIO HERNANDEZ CARMEN HERNANDEZ THERESA HERRERA MIKE HIBBLER ROBERT HICKOK DEBRA HILL MARY HOFMAN CAROLYN HOWTON KATHY IMSDAHL CAROL JACOBS CARL JAMES CHRIS JAMES JUSTO JASSO EVELYN JAZMIN JOHNNY JENKINS MARK JIMINEZ SYLVIA JIMINEZ VICKIE JOHNSON PATRICIA JOHNSTON AL JONES BILL JORDAN ANNETTE JOSE DAVID KATES TERESA KATES JAMES KAWASAKI KIM KEYSER DOUG KLINCHUCH KRIS KOUKLIS JEAN KRAFT SAM KRUGER BONNIE LAMB DONNIE LAMB MARGARET LARA 171 Superior Seniors 'Ye 172 5 QL 1 , ,ga .
