Miffion Sam Diego de Alcald FGRE WORD On July 16, 1769, the first of the Cali- fornia Missions, San Diego de Alcala, was founded by the Franciscan, Father Junipero Serra. During the next fifty-four years, California's mission system grew to a total of twenty-one located a day's journey apart along the Golden Road, El Camino Real. These Spanish missions were the only cen- ters of civilization and culture in California until late in the eighteenth century. This year, 1969, marks the bi-centennial of our historic missions and the fiftieth anniversary of the Del-Afio. Just as the mis- sions' existence of 200 long and eventful years reminds us of an important era in the colorful history of the Golden State, so also the Del-Afio staff hopes that the pages of this book will serve you as reminders of the achievements and activities of the school year, 1968-1969.
