DZ. Clifford P. Loader first was elected to the Delano City Council in April, 1956. Our Sister City affiliation with Asti, Italy is among the most significant achievements made during his term of office. The People to People program was created in the Fall of 1956 in order to strengthen the bonds of friendship between local people on as personal a basis as possible. Through the levels of government closest to the people and furtherest from national and international pressure, the affiliation of one town with another has created better understanding and many international friendships. There are no direct material gains to be made in this program, but it is one of the successful international programs conceived in the United States. An affiliation between Asti, ltaly and Delano was formed in June, 1961. Our contacts with Asti have included an exchange of official documents and a visit by former Councilman August Panero. Then, in 1964, Mayor Loader paid an official visit to Asti where he was warmly re- ceived. Official documents and gifts were exchanged on this occasion in recognition of the Asti-Delano affiliation. Delano was honored during the summer of 1964 to host Enzo Sticco, a native of Asti. Enzo, a law student, cemented the bond of friendship between the two cities by describing Asti inti- mately, much as Mayor Loader must have done on his friendship trip. We believe that Mayor Loader should receive full credit for the success of our affiliation with Asti. He originated it and he has kept it at its high level of activity. With such warm memories from Enzo Sticco's recent visit, we will pursue our friendship with Asti more actively. We hope that through this affiliation, the people of both cities will have a better under- standing of each other and that this will contribute to our ultimate goal of world peace and friendship.
