An additional 500 students buy lunches at the handy outside snack bar. In three shifts students crowd into long lines for plate and sack lunches. Christmas and Thanksgiving bring special fare and especially long lines. This problem is expected to be lessened next year with the completion of a new cafeteria. Working full-time, eleven ladies assist Mrs. Slankard in the planning and preparation of meals. Ten other workers help with noon-time serving. In addition to regular noon meals, the cafeteria staff serves many hundreds at special banquets and luncheons. Everyone rushes and crushes to enjoy the delicious food served daily to 700 hungry students in the cafeteria. Note the contented smiles!

Although carrying out a full-time schedule of regular office work, the com- petent staffs of the attendance, bookkeep- ing, and counseling offices always find time to help students with mimeograph- ing, special bulletins, and questions. They also handle attendance records, mail, switchboard, and payroll work. For the first time this year, Delano High rates a full-time registered nurse. Cheer- ful Mrs. Harriet Hennessee gives her time to ailing students. By maintaining a com- plete record of each student's past health, Mrs. Hennessee hopes to deal with any health problems arising. Ready to help troubled students is Mr. Robert Pennington, school psychologist. Mr. Pennington is on deck each Thursday in the attendance office.

A small army of maintenance men, custodians, grounds men, bus drivers, and laundrymen is needed to keep Delano High running neatly and smoothly. Vital to the campus, the men are also friendly and cheerful. Many students look for- ward each day to their friendly contacts with the efficient crew. On the shoulders of Mr. Lyle Penrod, a school employee for some 25 years, rests the responsi- bility of maintaining the 50-acre campus. Work- ing under Mr. Penrod, men from his department execute the many complicated lighting and build- ing plans given to them for the school Christmas program, as well as smoothing many of the daily emergencies in the lives of the 1600 people con- nected with DHS. Each day's 3:45 bus bell brings approximately half of Delano High's 1400 students to the fleet of big yellow buses. Carrying students to and from their homes in Kern and Tulare Counties, the 16 buses travel a total of 900 miles each day. The longest daily run for a bus is 58 miles, the sohrtest, 26 miles. In addition to daily runs, the transportation system adds thousands of miles to the total each year by providing transportation for clubs, classes, choirs, and teams. In the bus garage three full-time employees keep the buses-and their much-sought-after ra- dios-in perfect working condition.
